Or, just anything you remember. A favorite of mine is Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco but it most definitely didn't start off that way? This is just the notes I took on how it progressed, and I'm more curious about how that's happened for any of you...The very start is before I got it, then the "Um, phew...." is when I got the sample....

I will hardly be able to distinguish anything, and it will smell like a mess, but I'll tell myself that it's not as bad as when I smelled Amouage stuff in the past, and like Interlude Man, I'll think it's possible it grows on me, but to start it will be like a 3.8. Um, phew, this was a tough one as expected. Not stinky? But, tough. 4 max right now. Not sure if this increases though. Wore it on my wrist, really small amount, I like it in the air like a tiny bit, not enough to buy not even close, but it went from 4 to 4.8. Moving it up...I'm going to say 6.5 actually. It really is not THAT bad, especially in the air. I've worn this for the day 5/28, I really, really, really lke it. I'm upping the score from 6.5 to 8.2. On 6/26, I moved it up to 9.5. I've worn it like 6-8 times in the last 2-3 months. I love it. I've worn it so much that I have a bottle on the way. It's just so great in the air, and the drydown is wonderful.

Opus XIII - Silver Oud for me. First time I tried it, I was instantly repulsed. That strong barnyardy smell was unlike anything I ever smelled. But arguably, given it was the first proper oud fragrance I laid my nose on, it's no surprise I reacted that way. However, the dry down had me intrigued, and with the help of many others around here on Parfumo which kept telling me to give it a couple more chances, I kept going and testing it. And now, after properly discovering it and understanding the scent, it has become one of my favorite fragrances. Went from a 5/10 to a very solid 9.5/10

Im still in “find out” mode with Opus XIII - Silver Oud but I have a feeling I will get where you got too. Especially in the Fall.

This was def Nanban for me.

When I received my sample I have no idea what happened but when I first smelled it it had this REALLY sharp animalic note, reminiscent of sour spit, maybe even kinda urine-y. Super awful.

I convinced myself that I just need to give it a second and third and fourth try, and now this sour note is completely gone?? Dont get me wrong, there is an animalic tinge to this perfume, but its way subtle and honestly very appealing.

This is now one of my most favorite, if not my MOST favorite fragrance ever. Its just so dark and alluring and mysterious- very goth. Im in love.

I recently reviewed L'Autre . I smelled it in the bottle or on paper in the store many times over the years and it was always armpits. They don't make samples of it, so I could never try it at home.

One day, I sprayed it on my neck and scarf because it SHOULD have been everything I love. Imagine my surprise when the armpit opening faded away and I was left with beautiful citrus and Indian spices. It's even better on my partner.

@climabro I totally love when this happens! Yeah, cumin can do that, but I think some of the master perfumers use it to create an artistic contrast...I've found myself wishing sometimes cumin wasn't in a fragrance, then realizing that without it, the whole composition would be compromised without it lol. I have the odd thought that, with cumin especially, it's like looking at those Magic Eye Pictures (autosterograms) where after some time, a 3D image eventually emerges.

Otherwise, once our nose "sees" that 3d picture of the scent as a whole, the entire composition pops up for us to enjoy but it couldn't get there without all the notes. In both cases there is a reward for patience, and recalibration.

For me it was pretty much for any of the PdM fragrances. It was really the first niche brand I discovered back when I pretty much only knew the designer brands. The only one appealing to me was Carlisle. Weirdly enough, though, now I like Althaïr the best and I got bored of Carlisle.

That's a good point. What would the caraway smell like without the cumin? I think it would lose its Indian spice market feeling completely and a lot of its personality. I enjoy wearing it, as if I'm challenging the perfume establishment or wearing conceptual art.

There are only a few fragrances that I dislike passionately and none of those have turned into a like yet. However there are several fragrances that have at first been mild dislikes or "meh" type things for me but I have ended up loving them. I think Alien Eau de Parfum was the biggest turnaround for me. I blind bought it based on the bottle design, name and hype back in the 2000s when the brand was available only for online blind buys in my country and there was no other option. I was so excited that when the parcel arrived I couldn't wait and ripped it open at the post office parking lot and sprayed immediately. It was a huge disappointment. All I could smell was weird jasmine mixed with muddy lake water and aquatic plants. As I absolutely loved the concept and the bottle, I tried to wear it in several occasions, however as Finnish people are notoriously fragrance haters, of course wearing a beast mode fragrance publicly made me get so many insults from even total strangers that it completely discouraged a young insecure introvert girl. I gave up but decided to keep the beautiful bottle in my shelf anyway just for display. And thank god that I did! Because after approximately 10 years I had tested other Alien flankers and loved them, and finally got the courage to give the original a go again. And OMG it was gorgeous! I started to crave it every day. So much that I had to have breaks because I started to get nose blind to it. It's now one of my top favourites of all time.
