Stark contrast of oud and cantalope
What a fragrance! Not at all what I expected. Imaginary Authors never cease to amaze me, but this time I don't know whether I'm in over my head.

Whispered Myths opens with a strong note of cantaloupe promising something sweet, but the fragrance is very resinous and leaves me speechless. This is a strong and oud heavy fragrance! I don't think it will please many Western noses, like my own, I think this might be too Middle Eastern for most. Oud is very appreciated in the East and the use of real, natural Cambodian oud in Whispered Myths might be too intimidating for some. This fragrance has me realising that my nose is not ready for real oud!

I am an avid and biased lover of the house of Imaginary Authors, but this one is simply too heavy for me. Though not completely unwearable like some reviewers say on Fragrantica, this is a very unique fragrance that won't please the masses, which in itself makes it thee fragrance for someone who can carry an oud like this.

After dry down, Whispered Myths changes into a more nautical fragrance on my skin hinting at the imagined note of a salvaged shipwreck. A slight note of salt, wet wood and ambrette is what this fragrances is made of.

It isn't even a case of the fragrance leaning too masculine, resinous heavy Whispered Myths is just too linear for me to be pleasant to wear. I need a slightly fresher element, maybe a sweet undertone or an herbal kick to lift it's character, because it almost becomes peppery by being so oud heavy. I don't know whether this is the correct term, but it is very monotone in its nature.

A couple of hours' wear leaves Whispered Myths unchanged on my skin. On paper, the fragrance is much lighter with a fresh note of not too sweet cantaloupe, a nice twist that I would have loved on my skin.
Though still loving Imaginary Authors to bits, Whispered Myths won't become a part of my collection anytime soon, but I am absolutely in awe of their use of real oud.

a neural net scoop of ice cream
You can definitely smell the cantaloupe in Imaginary Authors Whispered Myths. The cantaloupe is the entire reason I passed over this fragrance with a “nah, I’m good” dismissal when I first saw the perfume announced. Its distinctive musty-musky honeyed gourd vibe registers immediately, but what’s interesting is that in combination with the accompanying and somewhat competing woody notes of barnacled shipwreck and oud’s scorched earth pungency, the cantaloupe becomes less fruity and more creamy, like if you asked a neural network to come up with a new flavor for artisanal ice cream shop’s daily special board. Cantelurp Cram Cruble with splimter sprankles, anyone?

Weirdly fascinating
Ugh, this one is like a torrid love affair with an art school kid. Controversial, challenging, and certainly not for everyone. But also artsy, dramatic, and once settled in, much more approachable.
At first sniff, I wanted to be around you all the time. I introduced my friends to you, and they turned their noses away. "Yep, that's interesting."

It was an intense affair, burying my nose in your "salvaged shipwreck" dry down. I always hoped someone would ask me what I was wearing, so I could confidently say this most pretentious name, "Whispered Myths," like an art gallery after party in a friend of a friend of a friend's loft.
But then, things changed. Something was off. The melancholy, subversive drydown I adored was still there, but you seemed clingy and desperate for attention. Our chemistry was gone, and my fascination wore off. Now, when I woke up in the morning, I was annoyed instead of delighted that you were still in my bed.

I'll still try you on from time to time, just to see how things are. But like an ill-advised "wyd" text at 2am, it's never really a decision I'm happy with.

A Softly Sweet Wood
Right at the beginning I got an almost metallic note but that quickly faded into the predominant notes of cantaloupe and wood. I would say that there aren't any "top, middle, or base" notes because the scent really doesn't change after that. The cantaloupe is nice because it brings a lightness to the scent without overpowering is like most fruit scents will. So you just have a nice woody scent that doesn't make you smell like a tree. It lasted about 5 hours, which is nice because I find most of Imaginary Author's fragrances don't last very long. This one projected nicely for the first few hours but then becomes more of a skin scent.

Smoky melons
I don't even know what to make of this scent.

At first spray, it's straight cantaloupe and oud—melony, smoky, woodsy and resinous. I was really only able to smell the cantaloupe and oud throughout the wear. There was a slight musk from the abelmoschus but the honey was not distinct enough and most of any sweetness I picked up on simply smelled of watery melons.

It smells like you're at a Michelin-starred restaurant and the chef comes out to excitedly present a glass cloche filled with smoke. When they lift the cloche you smell the burnt wood chips but, then the haze dissipates, and you see a lone hunk of cantaloupe sitting on the plate.

Though I could only really distinguish a couple of the notes here, this perfume felt like it had a lot going on. The cantaloupe note was so realistic I gagged a little when I first sniffed it (I do not like cantaloupe or any other watery melons). This, when added in with the resinous and smoky oud, was interesting but mostly felt like an abomination of sorts. The scent lasted on me for about ten hours.

Overall, I'm not a fan of this but that's mostly because I don't enjoy cantaloupe. If you like smoky and fruity fragrances though, you may want to take this for a spin.

Fantastic, creative, addicting, and most certainly NOT for everyone. The scent: A sunken pirate ship with a chest full of rotted cantaloupe.

Smoke notes are hit or miss for me, and this is a miss. The cantaloupe gives it a sticky quality that I don’t enjoy. Super interesting tho!

I instantly recoiled after I put it on. It's strong and it's harsh. I get a wisp of cantaloupe I wish I could chase but it gets overpowered

Wanted to love this but it really doesn't appeal to me. Like rotting honeysuckle, this has an element that reminds me of Moth.

It vaguely evokes memories of my grandparents' house. A nostalgic jaunt down memory lane, yet not something I would ever see myself wearing.

The drydown with the oud soaked in honey is good. But I can't stand the 2 hours with the rotten fruit smell.

After an inviting sweet aquatic-fruity opening, this Oud-based Winter fragrance will remain mostly spicy animalic-woody. Male-oriented.

Very animalic dirty oud mixed with a very citrusy and sweet melón. It is a bit weird but when you can understand the perfume is interesting
