Photorealistic stroopwafel in liquid form
Never smelled the 2020 edition of A Whiff of Waffle Cone, but I got myself a decant of this one when it came out. It took some time, but here I am, ready to test it now. By the mixed reviews and the pretty low score on here (6.8 at the time of this review), I was a bit apprehensive to test it on me, but here goes!
In the air, it smells like salted caramel with some smokiness. When I bring my skin up to my nose, I get a complex accord that reminds me of a wafflecone drenched in maple syrup or a delicious stroopwafel dipped in hot caramel sauce. It's delicious, scrumptious and very gourmand: a good fit for fall and winter. I can picture myself tearing a piece of crispy, golden waffle and dipping it in that creamy, ambery caramel sauce / maple syrup. I also smell creamy vanilla and a spicy kick of cinnamon under everything. Sandalwood further imparts a creaminess to the scent while orgeat syrup has that almond facet that adds to everything. It's overall a pretty photorealistic scent in my opinion. The drydown leans more vanilla with some caramel and a hint of smokiness. It smells closer to vanilla ice cream with caramel drizzled on top which is very lovely.
I'm still uncertain whether I want a full bottle of this or not. It's a great gourmand fragrance but I understand why some people don't love it. The first hour or so, it's a very sweet fragrance (it's not heavy nor cloying though). My skin chemistry also seems to pick up on the smokiness and enhances it a lot during the first hour, something I'm not a fan of. There's also a slight synthetic accord mixed with the spiciness of the cinnamon that turns me off a bit as the fragrance moves on. The superb opening and drydown are what's making me hesitate. It also performs very well for its price and it's an amazing fragrance during colder weather. Apart from my personal opinion, I do have to say it's the first scent I've tried out in a while that has stood out to me for it's originality. Which is why I'll have to re-test this fragrance before making my mind up!
