Kilian should retire from fresh fragrances

Time after time, Kilian reminds you of just how piss-poor they are at making anything mildly interesting for the spring-summer seasons - it feels like everything has become a blatant cash-grab. The most recent blue bottle release Kologne Shield of Protection falls into this category all the same, and the blue bottle Kilians that have received praise in the past all lack something, whether it be performance, uniqueness, quality etc.

Initial spray impressions: absolutely abysmal - a lot of synthetic sludge. Definitely getting ambroxan/fresh shower gel vibes that we've seen before with scents like Vodka on the Rocks. As it dries, the calone and the lemon become a little more blatant, but the main accords here remain fresh-synthetic-ozonic and not citrusy. When I first tried to smell it up-close, I could barely smell it because the air surrounding me is all synthetics which is definitely the Kilian DNA on fresher fragrances.

The fact that this scent is inspired by blue lagoon (the beachside party drink from the 90s) aligns pretty well with the scent profile, because this is the equivalent of a cheap designer fragrance from ~30 years ago. This being a 50ml for €210 retail niche fragrance is just another deuce on top of the s*t sundae that niche perfumery has become.

Best, most accurate review.

D and G light blue, eau intense for men, mixed with window cleaner-windex. This is absolutely nothing to write home about. Embarrassing. This is my first Kilian, and absolutely last. I hear the others of the alcohol line are amazing. Should of spent money elsewhere. Absolutely disappointing. Very little to ZERO ginger, poor performance overall (for 200$ 50ml, piss poor) and very similar to D and G light blue intense, if I had to name a close comparison. Not saying "hey they are 90% alike note wise..." just saying buy that instead. This is A RIP OFF.

It's Okay

The best thing about this is the design: a nice gradient bottle that invokes the blue moon theme well. The smell is alright, nothing groundbreaking, minor similarities to Chrome. It's about average in performance, but the value is abysmal. If you're dropping two bills on a fragrance, get one that stands out. I had one of my non-fragrance-enthusiast friends smell it and he said it was generic, to which I agree. It smells like a ginger ale, with alcohol in it (I have never seen, let alone smelt the cocktail the fragrance is based on, so this is my closest description). I enjoy it, but I would not repurchase. 6/10.

Blue Moon Ginger Dash is another Kilian that will divide opinions. Some will find it too simple, others will love it just the way it is. On point, I would say. Intensely priced, of course, but perfectly balanced between the fresh, citrusy sharpness and the pleasant, airy, salty aquaticness of the Calone.

Fresh and fruity-sour lemon juice meets peppery ginger and great aquatics. Saltiness, seawater, fresh breezes and light green seaweed aromas are brought together to create a beach scent in a class of its own. The alcoholic vodka note gives it the typical Kilian touch. Simple, very wearable and well made. Sidonie Lancesseur's Kilians rarely disappoint.

Slightly better

While ginger is a common note in designer fragrances, it's rarely used as a dominant note.

This fragrance offers a slightly improved version of the typical designer fragrance, with a modernized and higher quality ginger note.

The ginger is blended with other notes such as lemon and ambroxan, creating a unique scent that's not photorealistic.

However, given the price point of a Kilian fragrance, I'm not sure if it's worth paying for a slightly better version of a designer scent.

Personally, I'd be happy with a decant, but wouldn't invest in a full bottle. Additionally, the performance could be better.
