My Queen Mother
Having just made the acquaintance of Alexander McQueen's My Queen a few months ago, I now have a sense of her ancestral lineage- so if you like My Queen, you'll be pleased with Heliotrope Blanc-

Heliotrope Blanc is just gorgeous- powdery sweet, vanilla with petals-

The longevity is incredible! 12 hours later, I can still smell a little cloud of heliotropic bliss around me (and I only used a smidge!)

Golden Cream-Colored Scent; Airy and Light
Out of the bottle, I was struck by a creamy, vanilla-smelling heliotrope, perhaps with an alcoholic tinge...? I could not tell. On skin, thankfully, there was zero alcoholic smell, and, on me, it melted further into that creamy-sweet realm. I don't quite sense the powderiness of this as much as others seem to; it smells clean, yes, like it *could* in theory be a luxurious hotel bathroom soap, but it doesn't explicitly scream soap or powder. People may even mistake this scent for a pure, light vanilla perfume. The heliotrope has a warm tilt; if this scent were a color, it would be a faded, paled antique gold or cream.

I sense the hint of jasmine, but it's not the flower itself blooming in the dew — it's more of a Chinese jasmine tea, unbrewed, like opening a container of dried whole jasmine buds... More musky and slight than floral and fresh.

It's the perfect level of faintness, to me; not undetectable by any means, but not able to be picked up from 10 feet away. If someone were next to you, they would notice this perfume, but it would not be overpowering.
For context, I applied this perfume very lightly using a sort of disposable, papery-textured sponge applicator. The faintness and pleasantness of this perfume lead me to believe any who claim this scent is heavy might have applied it with a heavy hand?... I truly and wholeheartedly do not get a suffocating sense from this perfume; on the contrary, it is airy and breathable. This is coming from someone who is very sensitive to heavy perfume scents. :)

Edit: Coming back to this, the more I smell it out of the bottle, the more it is reminiscent of the cherry pie-elements of white heliotrope that some claim they can smell. Unfortunately, I have not detected that note in the heliotrope on skin, but it is still ever-pleasant

Oldie but goodie
The 4711 of powdery florals, and I mean that in the best possible way: It's been issued ages ago, is available for a very low price, is rather light and simple and has a scent profile that has become very classic and doesn't scream "this fragrance has been on the market for almost 200 years".
No one can know how this smelled in 1850 and how much it changed over the years, but the current version is not challenging to modern noses at all. I was actually surprised to see the release date after testing it for the first time.

All the listed notes are perceptible. Heliotrope and almond are sweet and light, with a soft cherry vibe. Ylang ylang adds a classic "perfumey" floral scent, but also a cute banana-like fruitiness. Vanilla, of course, adds some warmth and to the base. Jasmine is the least prominent note, I think it's mostly there to bind the scent together and keep it out of the overly sweet gourmand territory. This is a soft and clean scent somewhere between powder and body lotion.

It's not something that makes me run and get a bottle, but it is very easygoing, comforting and cozy with an innocent retro charme.

The Quiet Lady
I have already written a statement about this fragrance, and this comment is an addendum. It turned out to be rather negative, but I didn't want to leave it at that.

My story with this classic began at TK Maxx. It was in the morning, so I could browse in peace and research almost every fragrance I found. There were some very interesting-sounding options! In the end, I had to choose between Quatre Absolu de Nuit by Boucheron and Hèliotrope Blanc. The comparison to the almost similarly named fragrance by Etro was what ultimately convinced me. Perfect, off to the checkout and then straight outside to spray it on...and well, I was quite disappointed.

The first thing I could perceive were the floral notes, which did not behave subtly fresh but rather unusually opulent. Over time, the almond also made an appearance. However, it did not evoke the association with marzipan, but rather with unsweetened milk substitute. As mentioned, Hèliotrope Blanc was initially floral, creamy, relatively low in sweetness, and not at all my thing.

Disappointed by what I thought was a bad purchase, I read the reviews again and wondered how it was possible that my nose perceived it completely differently than about 100 others. Well, it happens. However, it also happens that one changes their opinion about fragrances, so I decided to test the little water again after a while.

As a precaution, I had not applied any other perfume that day. It could very well be that a sweet scent cloud was clouding my perception. At first, the unwanted flowers greeted me again, but this time something was different. The unsweetened creaminess I had initially complained about gave way to melting almonds. Heliotrop wrapped itself like a veil over this construct. Immediately, I developed an association with donuts dusted with powdered sugar. Delicious!

I can only explain my initial aversion by the fact that the perfume simply felt unfamiliar to me at first. Normally, fruity notes and a measuring cup full of sugar can be found in fragrance pyramids. Hèliotrope Blanc is sweet, but by no means as sweet as others in the genre. While others scream, here you have a quiet, elegant lady who observes the hustle and bustle from a safe distance. She probably has more to say than some of the loudmouths, but you have to let her speak...

Overall, you get an extremely well-made fragrance. Every note is recognizable, and none of them feels out of place. It's not a big deal that the longevity is rather short. I'm glad I didn't 'overhear' the lady among the loudmouths after all!

The Heliotrope Revelation
I really enjoy blind buys at TK MAXX.. For me, there's nothing more exciting than standing in front of the perfume shelf, checking all the available samples on Parfumo, and then grabbing the best price/performance deal (My intern budget, however, only allows for treasures from Ebay and TK Maxx).

So a few weeks ago - I popped into one of the Hamburg stores and stumbled upon Heliotrope Blanc. 100ml for 12.99 and top ratings - BAM, packed it up.
I love sweet, gourmand vanilla scents and was therefore sure I had made a great catch here.

At home, however, came the sobering realization. Along with the understanding that Heliotrop smells more like a run-away than a kneel-down for me.

I have to agree with my predecessors, the scent is absolutely vintage and "noble".
To my nose, however, it also smells completely artificial and is a bit over the top - at least for today's standards. It is not light and playful at all but very opulent and heavy. The scent of a loving but quite strict governess at a European court. That's my association.

My first encounter of this kind with Heliotrop and hopefully my last.

However, I could imagine that it might be something for many ladies, especially in winter. The longevity is indeed quite good and the scent warms nicely.
In my opinion, however, it's not suitable for temperatures above 15 degrees..

I gifted the scent to a dear friend who had this fragrance on her wish list. I hope she can make more of it than I could :)

One of the most beautiful in this category that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing. Just softly powdered heliotrope flowers on sweet almond candy.

Heliotrope, powdery + seductive like a marzipan pastry with vanilla sugar, sweet... Not my taste. And yet....

At first, I find it a bit scratchy, but once that settles, a lovely vanilla-almond blossom scent unfolds with noticeable sweetness.

Matt golden marzipan-vanilla angel hugs the skin warmly. He is already 170 years old. No one but me can perceive him.

Bitter almond at the start
A charmer with an almond vanilla note
Subtly powdery sweet, marzipan-like
Never too heavy or dark and cloying

Incredibly charming & enveloping heliotrope-vanilla-almond scent that is simple & good without any special effects. H+S a bit weak.

Wonderful! Soft and comforting. Turns gray back to colorful. Marzipan sweetness with vanilla and creamy-powdery heliotrope. I want it!
