Is it a plum? Is it an orange? Noooo it’s….
An overly ripe strawberry!

Oh man I finally got it. This perfume opens up with a pungent fruity smell. In the notes it gets listed as plum but it’s more like this incredibly ripe strawberry to me. My mum used to make fruit punch with strawberries and when they float around in this punch bowl for a couple of days the sweetness is wonderful, just like this fragrance.

That fruitiness holds on for hours on end, not really making way for the other notes, which is a shame. Only when smelling my clothes the next day some of the leather shines through. Had that been a bit more prominent from the start it would make this a no-brainer for me. Right now I’m not so sure I’d like to smell like a punchbowl all day long, however much I love the smell of that. Just a tad too gourmand for me.

Like an amber & a comparison
I had actually wanted to add Café Tabac to my collection for some time, until I came across Mosaïque. The almost 1 year old wish to buy the Cafe Tabac was immediately changed and, thanks to the Souk, immediately carried out. But what led to this? Here is a subjective, but objective comparison.

Both are already fruity and infused with tobacco in the opening. The Café Tabac opens with a somewhat tart fruit (I think due to apple & mango, possibly also the bergamot) here the fruit is more lively, while the plum makes Mosaïque more dignified and the sweetness duller, heavier but also more velvety.

As Mosaïque progresses, the patch clearly joins in and gives this earthy scratchiness while the velvety, heavier fruit remains. The Café Tabac is lighter and fluffier, beeswax, caramel, date and the light "clean" woods are more present, these (despite tar and Peru balsam and also oakmoss) do not allow it to descend into the dark, scratchy earthiness.
Patch and the oakmoss (which is more dominant in Mosaïque than in Café Tabac), mate and the leather give Mosaïque this subtle earthy dirtiness (which I personally like very much) while the light and gourmand notes in Café Tabac (even if they are not clearly present on their own) keep it lighter and more aromatic.

In Mosaïque, the roasted cocoa comes through later and gives it more softness and smoothes out the edges, but they are still there, lurking in the base and tickling the nose if you get close enough, something greenish shimmers through again and again. Café Tabac | Aedes de Venustas" unfolds into a wonderful blend. There are no edges in the classic sense, the notes all balance each other perfectly, it is like liquid gold made of tobacco, wax, spice and the dark notes such as the Peru balsam, oakmoss and tar perfectly balance the gourmand notes so that there is never an overhang in that respect.

Think of it like amber, Café Tabac is this beautiful, polished shiny amber sparkling in the sun, while Mosaïque is the edgy, unpolished amber with some forest and earth still trapped inside.

Fruity leather with a green undertone. Understated, smooth. Favourite from the house.

It's all a bit much at the beginning, but after 15 minutes it becomes a pleasant, soft leather scent. Plum and moss noticeable. Quite unique

Opens with Wood, flowers and some sweetness. Driesdown in a ISO-E-SUPER skin scent. Not like M01 but in the same sphere.
