Sweet and dark leather
As Omnipotato said, Ombré Leather is the standard by which other leather fragrances are judged. Sonia Constant uses black leather that doesn't smell creamy or animalic, but rather like the leather seats in a new Mercedes. Combined with a sweet and earthy backbone, this is a powerful scent, but it's also warm and inviting.

How does it compare to the direct competitors? Tuscan Leather Eau de Parfum is more masculine and challenging, with raspberry and jasmine to combat slightly animalic leather. It also has a mild ashtray nuance due to frankincense. Needless to say, Ombré is tame and mass-appealing compared to its older brother.

Godolphin ditches the pungent notes, keeps the raspberry at the top and adds more florals in the heart. Therefore, the leather is easier to digest than in the other two scents. The fruity and floral notes eventually fade and Ombré has a sweeter drydown.

Back to Ombré. The opening is challenging, perhaps even too much for some. I enjoy the way Sonia uses a mixture of spices and florals to provide a lift and some balance to notes that would otherwise be nauseating. I enjoyed it in Noir Extreme Eau de Parfum where she used cardamom, saffron and florals to smooth out the cloying kulfi.

You can expect the same thing to happen here, except with dominant leather. The spices give it a bit of airiness and shift your focus while jasmine works its magic and balances the thick leather with its fresh and sweet floral quality.

Drydown is where things get intruiging. Leather is around, but the overall scent profile is more sweet. The amber base blends with patchouli and moss, giving off a vibe that I can only describe as dark. It's resinous, earthy and dense, with hints of leather. There's more character and intrigue than in your average amber base.

Performance is solid, I get at least 10 hours on skin with my 2023 batch. Ombré also sticks well to a leather jacket; I usually do like 2-3 sprays every other week. I recommend getting the 50ml bottle, as 3-5 sprays will last you a whole day.

Elegance for Anyone
Hardly in need of an introduction nowadays. Whether it is from that one cool uncle of yours or from a random stranger passing by with 10+ sprays, you've smelt Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum before. Everyone has, and everyone loves it, which is why it has become the signature scent of so many around the world.

The opening strikes with a not-overly-spicy dosage of warm, sweet cardamom, dare I say a little camphorous as well. It is supported nicely by a beautiful sweet white floral aroma from the jasmine sambac, which strikes as 'fuller' and more pronounced than regular jasmine.

Then the star of the show starts peeking through - black leather. A rich and slightly sweet realistic leather smell with hints of woodiness, done in an easily-recognizable fashion here. However, while not listed in the notes pyramid, there's also a prominent red berry fruitiness on top, similar to raspberry. It brings just the right amount of tart, sweet fruitiness to the blend to make it even more iconic. Oh, and for those worrying about the animalic comments that Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum gets, it's fictional nonsense. There's no true animalic facets here, and if you feel it does, then let me tell you, you don't know what animalic smells like. Try visiting rural areas more often. Might help.

The patchouli and amber make for a nice duet here, although there's not a lot of patchouli. Mainly, just a little of its musky/spicy/sweet attributes in the back. The amber adds a rich and warm sweetness, with the mildest undertones of resins. Vetiver takes a step back and just contributes with a touch of smokiness and woodiness, although it's hard to properly pinpoint as everything is sitting under a sensual, sweet dark leather, which is further complimented at the base with a touch of mossy dampness. It might all sound like quite a complex scent, but really, it all feels like a single unified creation. Peak of French perfumery? Maybe, maybe not, but it sure is the peak of mass-appealing elegance.

And thankfully, performance is remarkable too. On my skin, the fragrance easily surpassed the 15 hour mark. Of course, a skin scent ever since around hour 7, with projection also leaving me satisfied during this time. For the first hour, a very solid 3 foot bubble around me, with nice sillage as well. Things would gradually soften to around 2 feet of projection up until hour 3, after which it would close in with lighter (but consistent) pushing power until the skin scent status. Very dependable overall, which is why I still love to rock it at weddings - I know that it will carry me throughout the whole day without issues.

Outside of special occasions, Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum would do just as well in any other scenario. Minding the sprays according to context, you could rock Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum anywhere, anytime. An easy signature scent.

It's no mystery how Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum got its success. The way it makes leather its core identity in a mass-appealing way without toning down the intensity of the leather as others do + the sheer addictiveness and elegant aura that it brings = worldwide blockbuster. At one point or another, this will probably be your favorite fragrance. And I believe that most fragrance enthusiasts reach that point early in their journey. As @Merlotsupern said below, Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum is a milestone in leather perfumery which no one should skip.

Is it the best leather fragrance? No. But it will likely sprout a love for leather and a desire to find the "ultimate" leather fragrance that will hunt you for the rest of your smelly journey...

Overall Score: 8.1/10

Like The Smell Of Another Man's Skin
"We made vows inside the church to forgive each other's sins. But there are things I have to endure, like the smell of another man's skin. If that's not loving you, I don't know what is."--Sting, Loving You, The Bridge.

Last night, as I was returning from the office, I listened to Sting's recent work, The Bridge, specifically the song Loving You. The lyrics made me think of the cologne I had been wearing since the morning: Ombré Leather by Tom Ford. Yes, because the way the perfumer treated the leather here is like the smell of another man's skin, a verse extracted from the text. I love leather accords, no matter if they are suede, Nappa, or rawhide. It's stronger than me. Here the skin is not brittle or demanding; it is soft and inviting. Ombré means having colors or tones that blend into each other, faded into color. And I like to imagine that in this context, it means shaded skin.

When I smelled the paper on which I sprayed the essence, I really liked the fragrance I was smelling. And I'll tell you why. Ombré Leather opens my skin with an enormous freshness, like morning dew, with a slightly more indeterminate greenish tip reminiscent of dusting violet leaves sprouting around the blackened skin. An alcoholic and camphoraceous voice denotes an inky and leathery soul similar to black shoe polish. What you get instantly is cardamom, but the keynote is leather, a smooth and pliable suede. The opening is a combination of fresh spices and some flowers too. The nose has granted the spicy and minty tone of cardamom in a rumba with the sweetish flowers of jasmine. It has a smoky, slightly tarry, and dry smell. The nuance of the skin is not that of a new jacket, a briefcase, a wallet, or a new pair of boots, which lingers a bit in the air, makes you close your eyes and take a deep breath, but a rubbery, inked, and with an oily machine shop environment feel. Powerfully animalistic, earthy, and with a touch of smokiness. A light sprinkling of spices hovers all around, mainly consisting of saffron with a slight peppery smell. Saffron smells strong, leathery, earthy, hay-like, reminding slightly of rubber. I also have a kind of creaminess, which sounds like a contradiction, I know. An excellent suede effect feels beige and marks the fragrance as a much softer and calmer version of its holder material.

This inviting overture slowly morphs into a heart of earthy and slightly pungent leather notes that is well tempered with a hint of amber in the bottom to keep things light, airy, and a little sweet. A drop of indole jasmine envelops the black leather, lightens, adds a floral sweetness to the composition, and allows Ombré Leather to become more unisex. The amber note brings warmth and color, while the airy jasmine gives a diffusive intensity, creating a bold and luminous clash of leather and flowers. It is not an old cracked leather jacket or the side of the horse's saddle. The leather is soft and buttery, with only a simple hint of smoke and dryness. This is leather that offers comfort because it is wrapped in a veil of pale amber and patchouli.

Eventually, the skin fades into the background, allowing mosses, woods, and amber to take center stage. Slowly it smoothes to a salty and musky with a little earthy spice in the base. A masculine cut. What's left on you is patchouli, which isn't very heavy but adds some depth of character to Ombré Leather, an all-day greenish moss, with small patches of earthy vetiver similar to Encre Noire Eau de Toilette. The notes blend quickly and read more of a generalized green at this point. The amber here is honestly not that intense, even if it's an old-school composite amber note. It hides in the background without being intrusive and provides friendly support.

On me, I get jasmine, white musk, and leather as important notes, the scent of leather is powerful. Even if the consensus for this fragrance is more oriented towards the winter months, I am making the most of this splendid scent by enjoying it in the evening and in the day's cooler autumns. This is my new fall fragrance to count this year in my fall rotation. It's so sexy and sophisticated and not overwhelming at all. But it's not subtle either; it stays in the air when someone passes by and smells so good. If you care about longevity, it lasts all day on my skin. It's a very dark type of fragrance but not an overwhelming monstrosity with heavy, opulent spice. Ombré Leather is definitely unisex with a masculine, dry and warm cut, Overall, it's an ideal type of perfume, but it has that rough-dirty side. If you can't stand leather, then this is obviously not for you.

I base the review on a 100ml bottle I have owned since April 2021.

A Milestone in Leather Perfumery - don't skip it!
The mother of all contemporary leather fragrances, and effectively a milestone to compare against.

If you are willing to develop your taste around leather, this is probably the best starting point - the price is reasonable at discounters. My best practical advice is to avoid any "clones or inspired by", and get this.

Brutally, I would ignore the other flankers because this achieved the perfect balance between animalic facets, leather scent, ambery sweetness and overall performance.

You'll find plenty of good reviews around, so I won't waste your time any further.

The best suede leather fragrance on the market!
With a couple of minor twists here are there that made the composition more clean and wearable, Ombré Leather basically smells like Tuscan Leather.

The difference in the price tag between the two is big enough for me to recommend you go straight for this release in case you want to save some bucks and still smell practically the same.

Here are my 5 quick takes:

- The best suede leather fragrance on the market
- Created by Sonia Constant in the 2018 as a replacement for discontinued Ombre Leather 16
- The best fragrance release of the 2010s and one of the best designer releases ever
- Best worn during the colder months in business, night outs and dating scenarios
- Pricey for a designer

TOP NOTES
Upon smelling the Ombré Leather for the first time, you will be reminded of Tuscan Leather and Ombre Leather 16. No matter what the brand is trying to push saying there is no raspberry here, it is well present, although, less pronounced than in Tuscan Leather. That familiar fruitiness is unmistakably here. One more “hidden” note that seems to be avoided from mentioning is saffron. Numerous high-end fragrances use it, and anyone experienced with the aforementioned note will sense it straight away.

HEART NOTES
The fragrance warms up in the heart notes with the introduction of jasmine Sambac and dusty amber. The floral sweetness feels addictive and is on the same level of quality as in Chanel perfumes. Being the pure leather scent, the classy floral aspect never takes the center stage, and the fragrance dances on the perfect line of being completely unisex while I do feel like it leans just a bit more on the masculine side.

BASE NOTES
Progressing from the top to the base, the scent is clean, well-blended, and it can get difficult to distinguish different notes except that “to die for” leather. In the dry down, it is closest to how does Tuscan Leather smells like thanks to the lack of “ashy” note found in Tuscan Leather.

I find it personally the best suede leather fragrance on the market. The one I have the most experience with, and the one I could see almost anyone wear. Get it while still available in its first formulation.

Some spiciness upfront, with a marvelous sweet, dark leather dry down.
Effortlessly elegant, classy, iconic. Performance is fantastic too.

The standard by which all other leather fragrances are judged. Slight spice, fruity notes, and indolic jasmine accompany powerful leather.

Great for a designer perfume. It's spicy, sweet and earthy. Powerful, yet sophisticated scent. This should be your first leather fragrance.

Not the most exciting, but still one of the better executed amber base leathers. Approachable and appropriately priced.

Very much does smell of leather, opens - to my nose - *sweet* and fruity, but this fades with the drydown to soft, spicy, and floral.

Just smells like fine leather goods, with a fresh fizzy top from the spices and jasmine. Does get a bit pungent as a skin scent, though.
