"Noir Extreme"? How about "Welcome to the Candy Shop"?!
I don't know how it happens when a top seller house falls in quality, it sells more! Tom Ford has fallen after discontinuing the most brilliant members of Private Blend and you see how powerful the brand became! Furthermore, the sales policies is so high; you see bold difference between Private Blend and ordinary releases of the house such as Noir, For Man, etc.

Noir Extreme, for the first time I tried around five months ago, was a great let down. It still is. Someone really should give end to this oriental vanilla genre.

Primarily, the title is totally unfit to the context of smell. It would be Pink Extreme. Seriously, if there is a certain definition of "man" which Tom Ford uses it as in classic creations which used to separate genders, and I believe Tom Ford personally would deny that definition, this perfume is totally out of that boundary. If he insists on gay culture and conceptualizes it by perfume, then naming a perfume "man" is a market-focused trick.

Noir Extreme is an intense syrupy sweet lollipop with very punchy candy smell mingled with spicy air. It's more like crude home-made replica of a famous oriental vanilla by an untrained perfumer. A pimpy kinky medicinal sweetness that lacks the very character of every sweet smell: happiness.

A Deluge Of Fiery Spices
Spring and summer carry the scent of blossoming flowers, summer rains, ocean tides, and sandalwood. A feeling of optimism and adventure permeates the air. It is invigorating and fresh and leaves a sense of optimism. But once fall approaches and heads into the crisp cold of winter, we crave something warmer and more homely, like spices. It is not uncommon for me to fall in love with a fragrance at first sight. Considering Extreme Noir was a blind buy, I can't help but feel satisfied. And it has the right amount of spice to suit the cold months. It is a genre of cologne that shares similar vibes with Spicebomb Extreme, Potion Eau de Parfum. The fragrance begins with warming spices and settles on the skin with an embrace of amber and sandalwood.

The opening of Noir Extreme is a deluge of fiery spices. A warm cloud of delicious notes of nutmeg and the more mentholated notes of cardamom add the warm spice. I also sense that familiar, slightly leathery but not dominant saffron smell, along with the aromatic clove buds. Even though the olfactory pyramid does not mention it, the first note that reaches my nostrils is the smell of clove, which reminds me of mulled wine. Perhaps it is the eugenol that is present in nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. Instead, the notes of neroli and orange blossom come to me subdued. It is a warm and complex start, with assertive spiciness and an underlying citrus sweetness.

Yes, the spice is pretty intense at first, but it quickly becomes much sweeter. The heart reveals sweet flavours and creamy edges. This is because of the mastic resin and what I presume to be kulfi, an Indian frozen dairy dessert for which I have no framework for what it should smell like. I feel something nutty like pistachio and floral like a rose. The flower's queen compliments the kulfi note. At this stage, it has an excellent gourmand aroma, a warm amber undertone, and a delicate balance of floral notes. Some rose and jasmine come out of it, but neither is so distinct within the composition that it dominates or overpowers the other notes.

When it dries, it turns a little powdery. A smooth, creamy base emerges, with milky woods that solidify the fragrance and add depth. The base is modern and gourmand, soft with sandalwood, a hint of vanillin, and a bit of amber with that genuinely unique gourmand accord and floral tones. Luckily, it is not another ambroxan bomb.

Strangely and unexpectedly, projection and longevity are acceptable but not extraordinary, as I expected from a Tom Ford perfume. It stays close to the body and lasts for a few hours on my skin. Within moments, the boldness of the start gives way to the fragrance of the skin. Seasonally, I would reserve this for autumn and winter, mainly. It is beautiful in cooler temperatures and would be fine in warmer ones. Overall, do I like Noir Extreme? Yes, definitely.

I base my opinion and review on a bottle I have owned since October 2022.

Vanilla Ice!
Tom Ford usually take some risks, specially on his first releases back in the 00's.

Black Orchid, Tobacco Vanille, Oud Wood and Tuscan Leather were pretty much pioneers and they still stand unique to this day (despite some clones and very "inspired" creations around there).

This one is kinda unique but more mainstream and less daring than the previous i mentioned. It's a vanilla based scent but not strong enough to be a winter killer, more a Netflix and chill, a cuddling scent, around the house or by the fireplace kind of a fragrance.

The main player here is the vanilla, as I said before, but along with that it has an interesting freshness due to some citruses and florals. The citrus here are not strong, not in your face. Just gives a slightly juicy sweet mandarin orange feel with hits of orange blossom. During the heart of this one, the florals became more pronounced but the vanilla is still pretty much on the front. The cardamom helps the vanilla become more tamed and spicy, more interesting and less sweet. A really delicious warm vanilla ice cream. It will not change much during the lifetime on your skin. A warm vanilla fresh and spicy ice cream!

The longevity is average to good (around 8-10h), and the projection is average to low. Again, I prefer it to be like this. Is a feel good scent for cuddling and Netflix. Not your typical vanilla sweet bomb, ambery or medicinal. It's unisex and appealing to everyone. Not masculine and a complement magnet. Just a good smelling scent that will fit indoor enviornments during colder weather.

I recommend it if you like sweet yet fresh vanilla scents with personality. Not groundbreaking or masterpiece territory but still, a great frangrance for indoors in winter time.

Sweet Noir...
I have only tried the Eau de Parfum version of Tom Ford - Noir. I can say that the original in Eau de Parfum is stronger than this fragrance. Although this is labelled "extreme" I don't get anything loud here.
What I do get, is a sweet, spicy woody oriental, which is very well suited to cooler weather. I personally would wear this to work or formally. I can see it being worn at night or even on a date. I love the ambery, resinous vibe mixed with the pistachio etc. However I wouldn't consider this a gourmand in an overt way. It's subtly sweet. I pick up some peppery like nutmeg and woods too. I think it's blended together well but feel it's performance slightly lacking. I do think it's more versatile than people think it is and I think in the right setting this could work very well. It's one to have around for the right occasion.

Dark Gourmand
No wonder it's called "Noir". This has an interesting dark, slightly mysterious depth to it, and it's a beautiful combination of high-quality materials.

So, Noir Extreme begins with a slightly spicy and sweet blast, combining the warmth and sweetness of the nutmeg, the spiciness and dark, leathery saffron, the balsamic, woody and invigorating cardamom, and the slight hints of mandarin in the background. A beautiful start. All of these make up the main star of the show, and that is the kulfi note, which in case you don't know what that is, it's sort of an Indian ice cream made with dairy, cardamom, saffron, pistachio, and rose petals.

As the fragrance dries down, it becomes a bit creamier and smoother, but also a touch more floral, with the rose, jasmine and orange blossom notes making it into the scene. But don't believe that this turns into an intensive floral fragrance. Not at all, the floral notes sit more in the background, being overpowered by the sweetness and slight spiciness of the initial notes. What the floral accords do is mostly smooth things out a bit and decrease the sweetness just a smidge, and they do so just right.

Once Noir Extreme settles down completely, you get a touch of warm woodiness and some slight vanilla sweetness, along with a bit of amber. It's overall a beautiful fragrance. It's dark, sweet, complex, spicy, mysterious, masculine, and downright delicious. It's not too sweet, it's not too spicy, it's not too floral, it's just rightly balanced and it keeps making me want to smell it more.

In terms of longevity, it's not bad either. I got about 7-8, maybe 9 hours before it would disappear from my skin, which isn't beast-mode, but still quite great. Projection-wise, it had a solid one foot of projection for the first two or so hours, after which it settled down substantially, not projecting much more. Personally, I'd go with about 5-6 sprays.

For occasions, Noir Extreme is actually more versatile than I thought. You could rock this at formal events, parties and clubbing, gatherings of all kinds, and even at work or school if you reduce the amount of sprays and if you are confident enough. Just make sure you wear it during the colder weather, otherwise you will be getting complaints, not compliments. Still, even though you could make it work in a variety of situations, I would retain it to parties or more special occasions.

But regardless if you like the way everything sounds so far, if you haven't first tested it, don't blind buy it. Even though it's a very nice and interesting fragrance, it does not mean it will necessarily suit your taste. It's pretty different from other typical gourmands. It's not all just some sweet chestnut and a heavy dose of vanilla. This is a complex, spicy and dark-type of gourmand and even though it's a very acclaimed and beloved fragrance by most, you could just as easily fall into the category of people that just do not enjoy this. But I, for one, love it, although it's hard for it to justify its hefty price tag, so I guess I will opt for smaller 10ml samples.
