I read all the hype…
… and I grew up in the Drakkar Noir era (when every male everywhere owned a bottle by the time they hit 21), so I decided to grab a couple bottles on eBay (i mean c’mon, they’re only like $7) to test the hype.

They arrived in the mail, I hit the shower, and squirt, squirt here we go…

OH HECK YEAH!!! Time traveling back to the my late 80s/early 90s teenage years… nostalgia with an ACCURATE kick (the new Drakkar is more soapy than it used to be, with less punch, and shorter lifespan).

This stuff has a wicked projection punch that blasts out an easy 6+ feet and fills the room… sillage? Yep. Everyone will know it was YOU who was there before them… WoW… for nostalgic purposes, this one wins…

I’ll play with it as one to wear after dinner once in a while, not one I’m going to rock on a date or a night out, but as far as finding the old school Drakkar nostalgia… I’ve found it… and I’m STOKED!

The original gangster Drakkar Noir.
From the house of Al Rehab, buying it whenever I see one online. Rumored to have been discontinued, if you know where to look you can still find these, at around the price they where supposed to be once upon a time which is about $5,00 for the 50ml.

Here and there in the past I've been price gauged rather badly in the endeavour to salvage wherever is left of them for sale. Weird thing is I just found one for €4,99 and a tester on the same site for €1,99. I paid 18,00 in the past, in my area they're somehow returning it seems. Not many but I'm puzzled to see them coming back and how cheap some of them are.

Anyhow, this has to be one of the best fragrances ever for me bc simply this; where do you get a perfume concentration with this quality for five bucks? Creds to Al Rehab, It's loud yet mellow bc these have been sitting on the shelf in stores probably for years and years. Bought mine years ago as well. The scent is a sentimental journey back in time whenever I spray this.

This house has expertly blended the notes to fit in place perfectly, main ones I'm picking up, amber, Oudh, vanilla, and caramel, some of them not being listed. All the harshness gone, it's been macerating in my collection for ever and a day. Barbershop energy has to be your thing, it's the same vintage green, fresh, earthy, mossiness from start to finish, absolutely back to basics linear fresh out of the shower confidence in a bottle. Radiates this aura of a guy who is was simply "supposed" to smell exactly like this back in the day. You know like, why wear anything else? this is where it's at, why try harder?

A surprisingly striking and characterful men's fragrance that effortlessly manages to combine a sense of old world toughness with classy refinement. Dakar is ideal I think for men who appreciate making a dominant impression, it's as classic as scents get yet still easily wearable in modern times. I rotate and I'm saving the sprays with this one but you can imagine people wearing this as a signature bc comes across as versatile, familiar, natural and reassuringly traditional. For me it's for Sunday mornings or festive occasions. A timeless choice you could say for a confident man who likes to make his presence felt.

The king is dead, long live Dakar
Anyone who knows me a bit is surely aware that I love Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche. It was one of the first fragrances that I truly perceived olfactorily in my life. I associate many memories from my childhood with this scent. My father smelled of this fragrance at the breakfast table on weekends. These are olfactory memories that I will never forget.

And while I love the smell of Drakkar Noir, I have increasingly been annoyed over the years by its now terrible longevity. I can hardly think of a reformulation that has stripped a fragrance of its character so drastically.

Currently, I would say that a 4711 refreshing wipe that I apply to my skin lasts longer than the current formulation of Drakkar Noir.

The dilution of the current Kouros comes very close to this. So what does one do when one has embraced a fragrance so dearly but simply cannot come to terms with the fact that it lasts no more than 2-3 hours? One looks for alternatives. For a while, there was "Lomani pour Homme | Lomani," which smells similar but also lacks good longevity. So that was relatively quickly crossed off the list. However, through a comment on Parfumo, I stumbled upon Dakar by Al Rehab.

First, I have to tip my hat to Al Rehab. They didn’t skimp on the name here. What a stroke of genius in naming. Drakkar Noir simply becomes Dakar. Sometimes it’s just that close.

The bottle is not a sight for sore eyes. However, the sprayer is excellent. Someone needs to explain to me how these budget brands (not meant disrespectfully) manage to install sprayers of this quality, while my Tiziana Terenzi bottle of Foconero just drips out the liquid. A disgrace for the niche market.

A look at the fragrance pyramid initially shocked me. So this is supposed to be a 1:1 replica of my beloved Drakkar Noir? Oud in it? Where is the lavender? Where is the oakmoss? Is Guido Cantz going to pop around the corner? Alarmingly, though, Dakar actually smells almost 1:1 like the former Drakkar Noir. Therefore, a brief excursion on the topic of 1:1 copies, dupes, clones. Call them what you will.

I am generally not a fan of dupes/clones in the fragrance area. However, there are two exceptions for me. One is discontinued fragrances that I can no longer obtain at "reasonable" prices. In such cases, I gladly reach for the dupe when needed. Then there’s the category where well-known and older fragrances have been outrageously castrated or completely diluted over the years. Fragrances that one has come to love over the years and that cause immense frustration when they no longer smell like they used to.

If you want to know how Dakar smells, then read the reviews for Drakkar Noir and simply add 6-7 hours to the longevity. Because that’s where the rub is. While the current Drakkar Noir runs out of steam after 2 to a maximum of 3 hours, Dakar comfortably performs for another 6-7 hours. You can easily get through a full workday with this fragrance.

The price is still missing. There’s no nasty surprise here either. You can get Dakar for 50ml starting at €13. So here too, it’s an affordable alternative to the original. An original bottle of Drakkar Noir will always remain in my collection for sentimental reasons. But for those who want to smell this fragrance DNA today, they should only reach for Dakar in the future and steer clear of the diluted muck that calls itself Drakkar Noir.

The better Drakkar Noire?
I became aware of Dakar after searching for an alternative to Drakkar Noire.
I LOVE this scent. Unfortunately, it becomes very close to the skin very quickly and can only be detected by sniffing closely at the spray point.

With Dakar, you get an explosion of lavender, citrus, moss, and woods right from the start. Slightly sweet woody. But that quickly fades and makes way for a green herbaceous note. And the lavender always lingers.

A wonderful fougère, the Dakar.

The performance is great. A cloud of soapy barbershop follows you for several hours. Then it gets a bit weaker. But always noticeable and not really close to the skin.

A louder, more present Drakkar Noire. But in terms of DNA, they are twins.

The bottle looks a bit cheaper. The label is not straight. But at this ridiculous price, that's more than forgivable. The sprayer is fantastic. What comes out is top-notch.

Dakar is a fantastic piece. Definitely worth trying.

Oh, and the fragrance pyramid listed here seems to have been created by a true joker. Rarely have I laughed so much... Oud and sandalwood are nowhere to be found here.

Thanks for reading.

Viking Ship on a Trading Voyage....
.... and indeed to the Orient. A bunch of sturdy folks, sometimes wild, sometimes wise, but always curious, sail into eastern realms. This time not on raids, but in search of scents.
One of them, deep in Iceland, once heard about powerful and woody fragrances waiting to be discovered. Not just for warriors, but for men, women, and the whole family. And they want to smell powerful, even of wood. As a tribute to their loyal and durable ships.
They show no fear as they dock in Marrakech and visit the local market.
And they are cunning. They have all sorts of their everyday and decorative items with them, and cleverly encourage some locals to trade for their "Attare".
They encounter both confusion and keen interest. "Who needs a warm fur in this heat?" Abdullah remarks. The blonde Sören replies, "Oh, I’ve heard desert nights are very, very cool. Wouldn’t you like a warm blanket for you and your loved ones?"... First doubt, then contemplation... later agreement. On Abdullah's part. And a perfect trade for both. Fragrance of myrrh and sandalwood for warm fur.
Or at another stall: Snorre praises his carved wooden ship with great enthusiasm. "Original Nordic!" he says to Aishe, the merchant. "Do you have children? They must love wooden ships, original Viking style, unsinkable! And it’s wonderful to play with by the water..."
"What do you want to trade for THAT?!?" Aishe asks, visibly excited. "Your fragrance over there! It smells like music in my nose. So much dark wood!" Snorre is also thrilled.
Handshake! Trade! Wooden ship for oud perfume. This continues for a while until each crew member has their little scent. And the trading partner is satisfied with their acquisition.
In the following days of their stay, all the Vikings enjoy the life of the Orient, their fragrances, until a little mishap occurs. Some scents get mixed up in their flasks due to the hasty handling by Snorre, Adelheid, and their folks. A completely new fragrance emerges. A "BRAVO" from the whole group. "It smells like fresh wood for our ships" And also of the "Black Dragon of Marrakech," a sage liqueur of the locals. "This is OUR scent! We call it 'Black Dragon'! "Or Drakar... that sounds woodier and more Viking." someone else suggests. "Agreed!" the whole crowd cheers.
"To the Black Dragon! Skol!..." and they sail back north.

Nicer than Drakaar Noir. Longevity and silage are both excellent. I got this as a blind buy and would get this again - fabulous juice.

Always loved Drakkar Noir. However, newer formulations lack depth and strenght. This one does the job for me and is even more mature.

A blast from past. Surprisingly good and smooth. A typical 80’s aromatic Fougere, shaving foam like with lots of greens, herbs and oakmoss.

I hoped that it'd be Drakkar but a bit longer since it's EDP... lacks the biting cold unfortunately. And this warm undertone. Not sure.

Mellows after maceration. Then, Dakar is like a sibling of Drakkar Noir, with a duller top, mossier base, and higher and linear performance.

Aromatic fougère in the traditional sense, Drakkar Noir Eau de Toilette is very similar. Lots of green, oud is not present here.
