Balanced Green and Well-Groomed Nature Guy

Cappellusman's blind test No. 10 and once again a good one. At some point, I had seen the bottle while browsing here and thought about how interesting this old-school scent probably is, as it comes from a cigarette brand from a long-gone era.

"Camel Fragrance" presents itself as a very well-balanced, very green men's fragrance.

At the beginning, quite spicy, in my perception rosemary and thyme. At the same time surrounded by a pronounced green plantiness, probably a rich abundance of freshly harvested tobacco leaves. Quite mossy as well, with a slightly mineral background. A hint of something sweet occasionally flashes through, perhaps a touch of cinnamon.

All in all, a very honestly tailored, aromatically well-balanced green scent without disturbing peaks. One could certainly wear it again. If it should not go so well with cigarettes anymore in times of anti-smoking and stigmatization initiatives.

Tobacco Legend

So, here it is finally, a bottle of this extremely rare fragrance that no one here knows except for me, and which is only available on the bay. I got my bottle from Spain; elsewhere it seems to be completely unavailable...

I was very curious about how Camel (whose cigarettes I have been smoking for decades) would interpret and present a fragrance: tobacco-heavy and with that "Adventure" image that this brand (especially in the past) almost stereotypically carried? And why is this fragrance so incredibly unknown? I suspect it comes from the 80s, but even back then it completely passed me by.

As for the scent: Yes, there is tobacco, and quite a lot of it, right from the start, but it’s of the gentle and soft kind. It doesn’t mess around with citrusy soft stuff; rather, it hits you (somehow sympathetically) with a consistently masculine punch: smoky-resinous, confident. Somehow "dark," yet not gloomy.

Classifying or comparing it is difficult even for me after testing over 1000 fragrances. This thing is not a typical powerhouse, but it is also miles away (sic!) from modern or even synthetic stuff. It probably lacked a certain unique selling point, a sufficiently independent character for commercial success back then (likely alongside failed marketing). This is not to say that this fragrance lacks presence or is in any way interchangeable. On the contrary: it really has something (especially due to its rarity status). Pure tobacco and spice; perhaps it could have benefited from a bit more punch and a touch of sweetness to make it rounder, but so what - it was definitely a worthwhile purchase.
