In the absence of the present
Sometimes the memory still shines like a diffuse light through the lemon sweets in her old wrinkled hands. I wonder how long they lived in her cardigan pockets. Sometimes they pulled thin threads, tough as the resin of conifers, through the blind windows into the dusty room. In my mind I'm still biting on the candies, dripping spicy-sweet remnants of balsam onto the leaves on the green carpets. The pendulum of the grandfather clock has stopped. The door of her heavy cupboard is still open. He still breathes the wilted flowers, the remnants of powder, her musky perfume from the musty old dresses, the long pleated skirts that touch the shoes that stand leathery at the bottom. The smoke and the scent of the cigarette case still linger a little. And the sweet smell of wrinkled skin. This is probably the presence of their absence.

While the early fragrances of the London-based BeauFort brand once stood for provocative creations that deliberately overdosed on some unusual ingredients, such as the 'Come Hell Or High Water' collection with "Tonnere", "Cœur de Noir" and "Vi Et Armis", which did not skimp on ink, tarred leather, burnt paper, gunpowder and whiskey, later fragrances were increasingly more adapted and explored more familiar themes. This sometimes made them more wearable.
"Absent Presence" leaves me a little perplexed, as it lacks both consistency and wearability. Here, a lemony scent turns into an herbal candy (fruity bergamot, coniferous-balsamic galbanum, herbaceous-leafy violet leaf), pepper dusts over creamy-sweet sandalwood, which soon reminds me of an open closet door in an old lady's bedroom, the incense leather smells to me more like old shoes, which are still perceptible in the background in a base of tobacco-leafy, woody amber. This presence of their absence is moderate and remains in the room for a few hours.
