LESS BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
I'm on my second bottle of the original, eponymous Bottega Veneta fragrance and at some point during these purchases I scored a gorgeous little boxed mini of Eau Legere, the inevitable flanker.
I should mention here that the bottles from this house are truly praiseworthy: simple, clean and expensive-looking with hefty glass bottoms and restrained details, such as the basket weave pattern on the base paying homage to the brand's heritage as a high-end leather goods designer. But the bottle alone won't do it - with a generous mini at my disposal, I've had the chance to sample this over a couple of seasons and I'm not entirely convinced.
According to the company's website, the intention of this flanker was to "illuminate the brightest, freshest facets of the Bottega Veneta fragrance" and to that end they have succeeded with Eau Legere. Given that flankers generally go in one of two directions: "extreme" or "fresh", what we have here is the latter: Bottega Veneta Lite.
This opens with the signature leather accord that characterised the original; not a smoky, birch tar leather - to my nose, the "leather" in both these fragrances reads more like a cedar note, but perhaps the citrus-like nuances of pink pepper and bergamot are influencing that impression. Either way, the opening of Eau Legere is familiar, albeit more subdued, and distinguished by a stronger lime-like citrus note.
After a promising opening, the heart and base notes are where this fragrance really begins to part ways with the original. The milky, plummy violet-like jasmine of the original has been replaced with a clean, crisp gardenia and jasmine heart with a trace of the opening leather/citrus hummimg quietly in the background and keeping sweetness at bay.
At this point, Eau Legere begins to smell somewhat generic, like a pleasantly clean but faceless floral you've smelled many times before. The extended oakmoss base note, a highlight of the original, seems entirely absent in this version, being replaced by a soft musk. Discussion of base notes is somewhat irrelevant, however, as after a couple of hours Eau Legere has retreated to a very close skin scent and has all but disappeared by the three to four hour mark in my wearings, even with lavish application.
It seems a shame that the trade-off for "freshening up" the more distinctive elements of the first Bottega Veneta fragrance has resulted in something less distinguished and noteworthy than the original.
This assessment probably sounds a little harsh but I don't mean it to be dismissive. It's just that (in Australia) the 75ml EDT retails for $165, which is approaching niche territory. For that price I want a little more bang for my buck.
I can see this one having appeal for those who found the original a little too declarative and want a light, close-wearing floral leather that feels crisp and fresh for the summer months.
I would emphasise testing on skin before purchase, as Eau Legere had significantly more presence on paper than it did on my skin.

Simple yet sovereign
I love a good, simple scent. It is nice to be able to detect the notes and enjoy them, together with the feeling of being able to do it. BV Eau Légère is a simple scent, consisting of only 6 different notes. It is also in my top20 of favourite fragrances because it bringes me into a certain mood whenever I spray it on. I immediately feel much better, no matter how my mood has been.
Top is pink pepper and bergamot. These two work really well together, creating a dry, almost woody expression and, imho, giving this scent a unisex feeling. After 10-15 minutes the flowers, gardenia and jasmine, arrive. They add some depth to the scent and the dryness disappears, making the scent more feminine. I still think, though, that men can wear this as well as women. Finally, oakmoss and musk land this fragrance beautifully. All in all this takes you on an 8 hour journey, eventhough it is rather subtle. Not much ado or loud singing - just a really nice travel companion all the way.
The bottle is pretty. No wonder that BV has used it for several of their fragrances. This bottle has the smoky metal top, a nuance I like a lot on metals.
To me this fragrance has a distinct and rare expression that leaves me with a feeling of sitting in a garden, smelling both the herbs and the flowers. I am almost through the bottle and I am going to buy it again.

Day and Night
The first two women's fragrances from Bottega Veneta have corrected my rather skewed perception of today's mainstream perfumery. As different as the two are in their essence - just like night and day - they are remarkably similar in their innermost core.
Bottega Veneta EDP is a powdery-floral chypre with a warm, gentle leather note and a dreamy oakmoss-patchouli base that evokes thoughts of earthy, mossy forest floors, while Bottega Veneta Eau Legere is a cool, white floral bouquet resting on oakmoss, reminiscent of the freshness of a lively bubbling forest spring. This may sound like there are few similarities - yet, when you have both in front of you at the same time, the shared DNA becomes clear: This green-woody base note interspersed with white flowers, which in Bottega Veneta EDP takes on its characteristic quality with soft leather and aromatic oakmoss and slightly earthy patchouli. In Bottega Veneta Eau Legere, this special green-woody-floral note is underpinned by pepper and musk, contributing to that unique lightness that defines the essence of the lighter - and I would also claim - younger variant.
Bottega Veneta EDP is inherently warm, softly enveloping, intense, and distinctly darker than the much lighter Bottega Veneta Eau Legere, which exudes a distant, cool, yet very feminine freshness paired with youthful lightness. The sillage is quite strong in both versions, but Bottega Veneta Eau Legere performs better on warmer days, while Bottega Veneta EDP, due to its intensely powdery-leathery character, is more suited for cooler days.
For me, Bottega Veneta EDP and Bottega Veneta Eau Legere are not only perfectly rounded chypre fragrances but also the most elegant mainstream scents launched in recent years.

Lamb Nappa Leather Second Hand
I was searching in all the stores for a butter-soft leather jacket, preferably in black and in a denim style.

I had no idea that this would be an almost impossible task.

Eventually, I looked on eBay and found it.
There it was, just as I had imagined and in the right size.
Even the photo conveyed to me the tactile softness and the smooth leather scent.
The fact that the piece was second hand made it even more attractive to me, as leather improves with wear.

The price was moderate, and soon the object of my desire found its way to me.
And in person, the jacket matched my expectations exactly.
I want to wear it in bed too.

Today I wore it while visiting the perfume stand.
The dealer wisely handed me Legere - which was completely compatible with my jacket.

The scent clings to the skin, smooth, without weighing it down.
The bergamot appears fresh - softened by sweet pepper.
The gardenia glows dark red - illuminated by bright jasmine.
Oakmoss dims the scent into a bitterness - enhanced by musk.
And above all, the fine lamb nappa leather scent hovers.

I feel gently and simultaneously daringly enveloped - with a kick of secretive eroticism.

The allure of the fragrance is that it doesn't reveal everything at once.
It is like a flirt that promises everything - without the obligation to fulfill any of it.

Grandios hingehaucht
There in moss-covered clefts,
Where the cooling west winds blow,
And the crown around temples and hips
Elves engage in a dance.

Joseph von Eichendorff

The scent of Bottega Veneta, Eau légère is so successful that only poetry can adequately describe it - in this case, of course, not my own, but that of a great Romantic. "Moss-covered clefts" can indeed be found in Bottega Veneta E.L.; the crisp freshness of oakmoss (which substitute has been found here for the 'real thing', I cannot say, oakmoss is on the list of fragrance materials that are supposed to disappear from perfumes) is palpable, the user of this fragrance experiences cooling through lemon, which does not bite, but together with very subtle floral notes leads down a green path into muted light. Here, everything is really just wafted, even the soft leather note. Nevertheless, it is precisely the delicacy and restrained elegance of this "light water" that can breathe joy into weary souls - grandiosely, what the perfumer Michel Almairac has accomplished here... and then it also comes from a mainstream giant, namely Coty... - Wonders do happen. Yes, there is also a small drop of bitterness - like many beautiful impressions, this "light water" leaves me after two hours, it fades a bit too early, but I forgive it, as it is so delightful and perfect as long as it is present. And for all those who prefer it less poetically: The Bottega Veneta Eau de Parfum lasts better (understandably), has more leathery components and a more pronounced chypre character. This "light water" that I celebrate here is characterized by its citrusy, green top notes, which are particularly pleasant in summer. This "light water" is exactly the summer fragrance I have always been looking for.

A light, beautifully fresh chypre for summer. However, I think I'd prefer a cologne in the heat and a "real" chypre in the evening.

Initially a noble-bitter (men's) soap for me, it then becomes fresher and rounder at the same time. I like it a lot. Lasts quite long. Thanks to Heike!

Clear and serious when you want something that's not sweet, sugary, berry-like, or girly. Fresh, woody, floral, like a linen closet.

In the deep, rugged forest, a white floral bokeh sparkles over oak moss and leather. Modern chypre with ease & charm - my favorite!
