The Sybil Spell
Vetiver has been a favorite ingredient in perfumes ever since I met Cacharel pour L'Homme Eau de Toilette, and it is one of those notes that you have probably smelled a million times but could never identify. It is a highly appreciated addition in fragrances predominantly for men and is present in many blends with unique facets. I have quite a few colognes based on vetiver, and it shows in all its palettes and styles as follows. It is rough and dark, like in Vetiver Essence, sweaty and airy, like in Eau de Cartier Vétiver Bleu, aromatic and citrus, like in Vetiver Eau de Toilette, woody and inked, like in Encre Noire Eau de Toilette, creamy and pale, like in Vetiver, or austere and straightforward vetiver, I could go on forever. There are many beautiful scents of vetiver. After wearing some of those, as mentioned earlier and already having in my collection the classic Carven pour Homme Eau de Toilette, I couldn't wait to try the 2014 edition of Vétiver (2014).

Carven Vétiver opens up green and minty, like an old-school cologne, with a tangy accord reminiscent of yuzu and tomato leaf, which could come from the tasty lemongrass. The initial blast is that of a classic barber's cologne, with a dyad of freshly squeezed lemon juice and dewy lavender right after the rain, a familiar fougére-like soapiness found just below the surface. There is a hint of yellow grapefruit, with the bitterness defining the sharp sensation of that citrus note, which is anything but obnoxious. Carven Vétiver is a perfume true to its name, with the vetiver root stinging from the start with a lively green freshness. The unusual notes of lemongrass and lavender amplify the clean effect.

A rich rosy note of geranium leaf follows that lasts for the perfume lifetime: the rosy floral aspect of the geranium leaf is clear. A smooth, tender, and clean vetiver aroma slowly intensifies and blends with the geranium leaf to produce a soapy, almost powdery accord in the heart notes. Lavender fades as it moves behind the curtains while a sweet-spiced nutmeg lingers atop the heart. In this first round, I receive little, indeed not all, the sweetness of orange blossoms, perhaps held back and confined by the other heavy elements.

Only in the ultimate phase do I detect almost solitary vetiver, airy but also muddy and resinous that mixes with the hardly perceptible woods of cedar and sandalwood and stressed by warm and slightly smoky incense benzoin. Here we have a solid take on vetiver, which is herbaceous with a note of iodine—as some vetivers have—and a nuttiness similar to the core of unripe walnuts. Eventually, the overall scent becomes warmer, rounder, resinous to the limit while remaining true to the heart.

Carven Vétiver smells of sunshine, fresh and summery, with the last touch of virile sensuality. The perfume has good lasting power and sticks to the skin, making it a safe scent for the office. I suggest wearing it on the fresh and sultry spring and autumn days and easy to wear on the cool summer nights. It is relaxed vetiver to be pampered, to be explored softly and in silence, the vetiver that greets introspection rather than the attention that seeks ostentation. Carven Vétiver is a delightful version of the use of vetiver. It deserves some attention, but Carven's scents seem lost and ignored on the perfume counters. The hazelnut look creates a soft, comforting impression you want to smell in and makes it all seem subversive and nontraditional, faintly, a beautiful modern take on authentic vetiver.

I based the review on a 100ml bottle I have owned since April 2021.

Stay Objective, Boy!
We often heard this sentence from our teacher when we raised objections or started to grumble. He didn't always take that well, and it was his version of "Stop complaining, stay cool, it doesn't help." That usually brought silence.

Carven has a long tradition with its Vetiver versions, and it becomes clear that this interpretation from the house finds less favor because the old classic values have been softened, and the scent is experienced as more generic and less coherent.

Nevertheless, I was curious to see how the current Vetiver performs and whether it might be a pleasing, modern variant of the traditional theme.

The bottle, with its modern design and penetrating turquoise tone, radiates a rather poppy vibe that might offend proponents of the old school. The spray head is rather small, works normally, but is otherwise unremarkable.

The scent begins fresh-citrusy, with a rather harsh twist. I perceive bergamot and grapefruit, and to my delight, the use of mandarin has been omitted, which somewhat spoiled L’Eau Intense for me, as it conveyed a wellness impression and evoked associations with Aqua di Gio, Silver Mountain Water, Happy for Men, and others that I don't particularly like.

Early on, the typical Vetiver note joins in, which, in my opinion, blends well with the other elements.

Unlike other classic Vetiver scents, the sometimes slightly outdated impression or a soapy embedding is missing. Everything remains focused on a soft, fresh, classic, yet unobtrusive Vetiver appearance. I had already positively noted this about Himalaya.

What I find particularly interesting is that the scent, fitting the visual appearance of the bottle, radiates something blunt, distant, cool, conceptual, perhaps even slightly spacey.

I think of a dry cleaner, a polished hallway, disinfection, or something slightly unnatural, like the smell of new sneakers, without this element being strongly in the foreground. Although I haven't smelled much of it yet, I imagine it could fit well into the CdG portfolio.

It feels sober, not particularly cozy or warming, and it is certainly not a party scent, as beautifully described by DonJuanDeCat. I also can't detect much fragrance development; the projection is not particularly strong and diminishes relatively quickly, although the longevity in the skin-close area is somewhat more enduring. However, it would surely fit better into the warmer times of the year..

For me, despite its weaknesses and somewhat synthetic impression, it represents a different approach to the theme. The old-fashioned or soapy aspects are absent; the scent feels a bit younger and could thus be embraced by younger individuals as an entry into the world of Vetiver, who might not suit an old Vetiver veteran as well, without it trying too hard to seem youthful.

I find it a nice alternative to appear "clean" in a different way than through soap or shower gel, to position oneself clearly and soberly, perhaps even intentionally heavier, more approachable, or professional. Being at peace with oneself, without annoying anyone with the creaky Vetiver board, a classic Cologne impression, or strong soapiness. Here, it shows certain qualities of a mainstreamer, which I mean entirely positively.

Compared to Dominguez’s Agua Fresca, it is significantly closer to the Vetiver theme, less piercing, and in comparison to Himalaya, it is duller, more one-dimensional, but still very wearable. It could be a bit stronger, but reapplying after some time is not a mistake.

I like it quite a bit, despite the overall mediocre reviews and certainly justified objections, especially when one does not perceive it as a competitor to the established classics.

“Stay objective, boy, or you'll be out!” “Alright - I will!” *pschhhhht* *pschhhhht*

Simply Vetiver!
It's been a long time since I tested vetiver fragrances. At least those that actually smell good of this earthy scent ingredient. Until then, there was a lot that was rather trivial. With some others, the vetiver scent was not very noticeable, sometimes not even when the term for this note appeared in the fragrance name.

Hmm.. strange. I always thought vetiver would smell like freshly cut grass. In fact, vetiver smells more earthy, sometimes heavy (depending on the situation), and, what vetiver haters would probably like to say, like a musty cellar. But I think that's great :D

The scent:
The fragrance initially starts with the juicy-green and earthy vetiver. After that, you can smell the first citrus and fresh notes like lemon or bergamot, while grapefruit is less noticeable.
The vetiver becomes stronger and smells good and natural at all times. It seems that the citrus notes are somewhat pushed back, but the lemon can still crystallize out and is quite strong alongside the vetiver. This makes the scent more sparkling and fresh.
A little later, you can identify lavender as a floral note, and also a bit of rose, but the rest of the notes listed in the heart note are hardly detectable.
In the base, the fragrance becomes woodier, which forms a nice foundation for the earthy vetiver.

The sillage and longevity:
The scent is not particularly strong, but at the beginning, it radiates well. Even later, it doesn't stay very close to the body, as you can still perceive the fragrance up close, but it won't leave a scent trail.
The longevity for me was about six or seven hours. That's okay.

The bottle:
The bottle is shiny green and rectangular in height. The neck is shaped like an anvil. On the front, the name and brand of the fragrance are simply written in black. The cap is cylindrical, black, and also glossy. Overall, it's a bit simple, but quite well made.

Vétiver by Carven is a solid vetiver fragrance without any frills. It smells almost entirely of vetiver (with citrus hints) and a woody base. It has no "disturbing" other notes that could weaken the vetiver scent or push it into the background, as happens with some vetiver fragrances, and therefore simply smells of vetiver. Wow, I wrote "vetiver" so many times in this paragraph…

Thus, it is very nicely made for anyone looking for a natural, beautifully earthy vetiver scent and can certainly be seen as an alternative, for example, to the vetiver fragrances from Guerlain.
The earthy scent makes it wearable in all seasons, and it can be suitable for many occasions. However, it is not particularly suitable for partying.

Well, even if you can't really let loose with it, you can still enjoy the scent for yourself. Provided you like vetiver and don't label it as a musty cellar scent. But as I said, I somehow like musty places, I don't know why,… I must be strange or something…

Classic green vetiver.
Nice complement with dry nutmeg.
Lavender and geranium are perfect.
Business a bit unusual.

A surprisingly beautiful lavender-vetiver scent that, with its fresh and citrusy notes, is an ideal companion for warmer days.

Lemongrass and vetiver exude a rugged charm, lavender soap bubbles burst fresh, soft, and elegant. Gallant, but not extravagant.

A very peppery note whistles through the air - after 10 minutes it softens to a sandy, smooth scent. For modern V-men.

Classic vetiver scent. First citrusy fresh, then the grass comes through. Supported by a certain herbaceousness and cedar.

Masukliner Vetiver, which surprisingly remains classic, but lacks innovation and doesn't surpass its predecessors.

As quickly as it's sprayed on, it disappears just as fast. Vetiver with synthetic citrus notes. Not a candidate for purchase.
