Discovery in the Drugstore Shelf
While shopping for some mundane items recently at DM, I once again took a look at the fragrance shelf. The selection of scents there is rather limited, but now and then I allow myself a sniff or two.
From strange to remarkable, there’s always something in between. However, I do not belong to those who mock and reject the budget fragrances from the drugstore right off the bat. Some beautiful classic scents have indeed been unfairly relegated to the bottom shelf.
I noticed two fragrances from the new brand Maddox and Mills, Tough Tonic and Lucky Liquid.
In the end, I took home Lucky Liquid, and I do not regret the purchase, especially since it didn’t make a huge dent in my wallet.

One shouldn’t expect a revolutionary, exciting new fragrance creation here. No new and mysterious scent essences are being brewed into an extravagant or avant-garde whole.
But what comes out of the sprayer smells very pleasant.

After a slightly alcoholic start, Lucky Liquid appears spicy with a certain sweetness.
A light lavender note and some bergamot emerge, but I also immediately smell the sweetness of tonka, which holds up well throughout the entire scent progression. Cardamom and coriander add a slight spiciness.
After a while, the fragrance feels quite creamy to me, with a hint of floral notes also coming into play. I can clearly detect the orange blossom (which I often encounter in scents I like, even if I should be repeating myself).
I also perceive a hint of cinnamon, but not too strong.
Later, it becomes a bit woodier and warmer. This sweet creaminess remains throughout the entire progression.
Overall, the scent is not heavy or overpowering.
The bottle is quite appealingly designed, a bit vintage in style, fits well in the hand, and the sprayer is excellent.
Similarities to Gaultier2 are mentioned here. I can neither confirm nor deny that, as I am not familiar with Gaultier2.

The longevity is not breathtaking; after a maximum of 5 hours, it’s over, and Lucky Liquid does not project too strongly. I didn’t expect a longevity and sillage monster here.
By the way, I don’t find the scent to be exclusively for men; women can also confidently reach for it. I believe that one shouldn’t be too strict about categorization. Some men’s fragrances work very well on women anyway. The reverse can also be true.

Whether I will buy Lucky Liquid a second time, I don’t know yet. For now, I like it well.
Perhaps the brand will release more nice scents.

As an eager perfume tester, I don’t only look at the top, especially not in terms of price. A glance to the left and right, as well as downwards, can never hurt. Especially since I am hardly willing to shell out huge sums for fragrances. Adding a net cold rent for a fragrance, only to have to eat toast with mayonnaise for weeks, does not align with my realistic thinking, and I do not have a cash cow sitting in my basement. And perhaps this scent isn’t even truly suitable for everyday wear. By the way, “everyday suitable” is in no way negatively connoted for me.
Some see it differently and believe that only the niche of niches is truly worthwhile, and the more expensive a fragrance is and the more outlandish it smells, the better and more exclusive it is. But that’s up to each individual.
I have always felt comfortable in the mass market and will continue to do so. Even if there are indeed some extraordinary and exciting scents to be found in the niche.
Snobbery and box-thinking have always been suspicious and foreign to me.

Yes, the often-discussed topic of niche... This scent is also a niche for me. How? What? Huh?
Yaaa, I took it from a niche in the sales shelf!
Everyone can shape their own niche ;-)

This perfume is outrageous!
In every respect, something is damn strange with Maddox & Mills "Lucky Liquid".

How on earth is it possible to offer such a high-quality smelling perfume for under 5 euros?
Why can the longevity/sillage compete with the big names?
Why do both the packaging and the bottle feel so premium?

Questions upon questions!

Many of us probably remember with horror the earlier times.
What was offered there as "perfumes" with at best toilet scent quality in the lowest price segment was beyond belief.
There were some "ocean-fresh" CFC toilet bombs that were olfactorily better positioned.

But what am I rambling about old times. It’s 2021 and the world has changed in many ways.
Fortunately, also in the realm of perfumes.

But let’s get to the lucky liquid from M&M (hehe).

What an opening. At first, there is a little emotional chaos here.
Especially when the 18-year-old son is constantly wandering around with "1 Million".

Because that’s the direction "Lucky Liquid" initially takes. But that fades pretty quickly.
After about 5 minutes, a fruity freshness develops that never becomes squeaky or even kitschy.
On the contrary, the EdT remains completely serious but not boring; it feels sweet/muted but not stuffy.

Honestly, I have to admit that I don't detect bergamot (which personally doesn’t bother me at all)

The comparison to "Le Male" is almost inevitable.
A soft lavender bouquet is omnipresent, the cardamom, which I love from chai tea, remains in the background but doesn’t hide.

The longevity is truly magnificent. You can get through a day at the office with it, although it does taper off in the last 2 hours.
The projection is insane; Lucky Liquid is in no way inferior to the big names.

It may be that my review sounds like an advertising event.
I don’t care; such a price/performance monster can only be recommended.
Without a guilty conscience!

Simply outrageously good!

Yeah, it fits.
In my opinion, DM has a solid price-performance bargain with this fragrance in its lineup. The price is completely reasonable for a drugstore scent. But what you get for your money is quite remarkable, uh sorry, fragrant. You can't expect a scent explosion or a creative revelation, but what you do sniff out is pretty decent. According to the fragrance pyramid, you should be able to smell mugwort and cinnamon bark, well, if I knew what that smelled like, I could confirm that or not. Cinnamon bark smells like cinnamon, right? Then I didn't perceive it, and I only know mugwort from our dog :-) I can confirm the lavender and orange blossom. And if what lightly hints at eucalyptus-freshness at the back of the nose is cardamom, then that aligns with the statement in the fragrance pyramid as well. I find the lightly floral-fresh scent at the beginning quite pleasant; afterwards, it gains a bit more depth, "more guts," and becomes rougher and more oriental. Personally, I would have liked a bit more sandalwood and musk here. The longevity is probably due to the price... for me, everything was gone after 3-4 hours unfortunately. But all in all: A decent scent for an in-between... Although, are there scents "for in-between"? If so, then this scent is definitely one of them.

Spices, Herbs... and all sorts of other good things...
I had never smelled, read, or heard anything from this brand before. A visit to TK MAXX and the price was the reason to buy this fragrance somewhat "on the side." Since my curiosity is sometimes greater than my reason (my COLLECTION!!!), it had to happen.
The perfume is made of high quality. Everything is very long-lasting and versatile, with hardly any "synthetics."
At the beginning, there is a spice and herb blend carried by lavender that has a slightly oriental-exotic feel. Sometimes coriander peeks out cheekily, sometimes cardamom, while the slightly bitter mugwort remains as a gentle shadow, sometimes above, sometimes below.
A rather "grainy-sandy" cinnamon then "sneaks" in, becoming more present along with neroli among the herbs. It even dominates for a while. At this stage, the scent reminds me of other "winter fragrances," for example from "D & G" or "Joop," but not quite as sweet.
After three or four hours, the base then opens up further "oriental" windows with harsh (vetiver, sandalwood) and opulent-woody notes that linger for several more hours and then slowly fade away.
A mixture of sweet, slightly bitter, spicy, herbal, woody... like a slow journey through different landscapes. Consistently interesting with little surprises :-))

Really cool!
At DM, Lucky Liquid has not been available since 2024, which is why I stocked up on a few bottles early. I opened the first new purchase at the beginning of 25 and noticed that this scent has also been reformulated. It is still beautiful, but a bit weaker, more watery.
It is no longer available on Amazon, and on the bay, it starts at 80,- EUR.
For 5-10 EUR, it was a real bargain, but at 80,- EUR, it is not worth it.

Gentle floral-woody feel-good scent with beautiful O-flower and subtle sweetness. Cozy and snuggly. I can't complain about the fragrance.

This liquid really makes you feel lucky. Not just because of the price. It smells great too! A nicely spiced, light tonka-lavender mix.

An oriental quickie for in between or a quick spritz for the cinema. Unbeatable for the price, also great as a "reserved scent."

A pleasantly calm fragrance that flatters without being significant, reminds me of a well-known blockbuster, which one? Absolutely fine for a drugstore.

A successful blend of Jean Paul Gaultier 2 and the classic Gaultier, very well done and absolutely unisex.

Sweet and a bit oriental-spicy.
Quite nice and practically a steal for the price.
Definitely okay as an emergency scent on the go.

A solid spicy-woody lavender scent with a subtle sweetness. And not just for winter - suitable for the whole year. For men and women. GOOD!

Average barbershop scent. The price of €5/100ml makes up for a lot. Starts off synthetic and spicy, then drifts into sweetness.
