4th time is the charm?

I wasn't a fan of 1, 2, or 3, but the different take on sandalwood using javanol made this one full bottle worthy. Please check out my review on YouTube :)

Escentric 04 - Sweet Grapefruit

When I first sampled this, I was really dazzled by how juicy and sweet the grapefruit note was, especially coming after the woody and more somber profiles of E01-03. I had called it a "marvelous ruby grapefruit candy," and I still stand by that more or less. But I want to stress that it's not sweet and "sugary" in the way a B&BW fragrance might be, and I don't want to deter people that are put off by sweet scents. This is really gorgeous and smells like the color of a sunset—that rich, pinkish orange when it's like the sky's on fire.

In Matvey Yudov's article about Javanol, which E04 heroes out, he mentions, "Javanol possesses a distinctive tropical fruity nuance resembling tropical fruits and grapefruit..." which I'm glad to see. I think it really helps to validate what I was experiencing with Escentric 04 because no one else was mentioning how fruity it was in other reviews.

Polysantal and Javanol joins hands with Iso E Super

Whereas Molecule 04 is basically diluted Javanol, a sandalwood replacer that gives a rich, steamy-tropical creaminess to a perfume, Escentric 04 takes things one step further by adding Polysantol, a powerful sandalwood synthetic that adds tremendous volume and diffusion. In other words, the wood accord here is both loud and creamy-sweet. But it’s been made summer-friendly (and more complex) through the addition of a bright, fizzy combination of pink pepper, grapefruit, and rose, as well as an uplifting and realistic marijuana note.

Radiant without any chemical harshness, Escentric 04 has all the sparkling freshness of a raspberry champagne cocktail and the naughtiness of a joint shared between friends on a rooftop in the city. But what really seals the deal is that, as the day wears on, that pink grapefruit note turns slightly, verging on urinous or rotting, which contrasts beautifully with the laundry-clean woodiness that makes up the body of the scent. It’s this tiny note of fruit rot that makes this one such a winner.

All's well that ends well?

Once I went into a weapon shop to buy my husband a nice pocket knife for Christmas.

There was a locked display case filled with beautiful, curved knives that were far beyond my budget. I still pointed at them and asked what they were about.
"These are Laguiole knives, they're something very special from France."
Then I spotted a single one of those knives in a small display case all by itself. So that must be the most expensive one. Curiosity won again and I asked the salesperson:
"And what kind is this?"
"Oh! This one has a handle made of juniper wood. And imagine, sometimes people just come into the shop, walk straight up to the knife and ask if they can smell it. And when I go get the key and unlock the display case, they just smell it and then leave."
I wanted to smell it too. He had to go get the key.
And then I just left again.
Can you imagine that?

In the opening of Escentric 04, the grapefruit predominates for me. All the acidity has been taken away from the poor citrus fruit and I feel strongly reminded of Pomélo Paradis.
I also think of Prada Amber pour Homme. That's because Escentric 04 starts off just as "sweet." There are no edges or corners, the scent is simply sweet and nice and soft, floral-fruity at the beginning. Stay a little longer, watch the butterflies, would you like a butter cookie?

After about 20 minutes, a small bitter note finally joins in, clearly the juniper.
From now on, the scent becomes a bit more interesting, but unfortunately only a bit. It fluctuates between grapefruit-soapy-clean with little flowers and the bitterness of juniper with Javanol. I only know how that smells because I also have a sample of Molecule 04. And that's also what remains of the perfume after just two hours of wear. The Javanol. It smells to me like fresh sports socks. A little sweaty, but mainly like laundry detergent or fabric softener of the "white" category. And I find the sillage of the Javanol surprisingly low.

Maybe I was a bit too excited about the new Escentric Molecule fragrances and maybe my expectations were too high, but I miss the recognizability in this perfume.

It smells good.

Experiences in Javanol

Besides cedarwood, I have always really liked sandalwood on its own.
Furthermore, I have a weakness for Iso, Ambrox, Cashmeran & Co; Javanol, or rather fragrances containing Javanol, were also to be tested.

Escentric 04 starts with a fine - woody grapefruit, which is unfortunately soon overshadowed by the (it must be!) Javanol. The scent unfortunately loses momentum and freshness; I have a musty - woody impression in my nose, which unfortunately does not change for about 3 hours.

After that, the mustiness fades a bit, and the fruity top note reappears with very subdued intensity. What remains is a fruity - woody gentle scent.

It is not what I was looking for. Maybe Javanol is just not for me.
But: on the other wrist was Erik Kormann's "September" for comparison, which has a wonderful orangey fruitiness that it maintains. The + a lot of Iso and Javanol without mustiness clearly lifts my mood more.

Absolutely underrated! :)
In the opening, there's a sharp citrus + juniper, which becomes pleasantly woody over time.
Not a fan of Javanol, but it works well here :)
