Cartography of Tonka Bay
Logbook of the sloops. Upcoming landing. A few spritzes of lime against tropical mosquitoes. One last sip of bitter Bay Rum, lost drops behind the ears. Smells of numbing pain due to the cloves. Of smoke clouds over flint stones. They are probably cleaning the barrels of the pepper guns below deck, polishing the balsam wood stocks with sharp nutmeg blossoms.
You can already see the white beaches. In the warm wind, tonka beans dance, soon beginning to shimmer in the sun, becoming tiny sweet thousand pearls on driftwood from dark vanilla pods. Their scent flows over the rough floors, creaming the planks of the old cabins. I will give the bay a name and then we will move on. My Bonnie is over the Ocean.

It took several years for Stephen Dirkes to open another chapter of his brand Euphorium Brooklyn with "Bay Rum," with the house even bearing the name Euphorium West Indies on the label, thus relocating its headquarters on paper (!) to the Caribbean.
The fragrance opens with a few spritzes of herb-fresh citrus notes (lime, petitgrain) on a spicy accord of Bay Rum, nutmeg, and allspice, which brings forth slightly bitter-spicy aromas of cloves and pepper as well as warm smoky notes. Balsamic amyris wood, which already has a scent reminiscent of creamy sandalwood, vanilla, and benzoin, forms the joint to the base of rather dark vanilla and sweet almond-vanilla tonka bean, which initially balances the bitter-spicy notes but unfortunately swallows them up in the course of time, making the scent a bit too creamy-sweet for my taste in the long run. Rather not for olfactory freebooters. For winter, this moderate evening-filling trip to the Caribbean can be a pleasant alternative.
