The scent of my mother
The black ball I'm holding right now is one of two that my mother bought in the early nineties on her annual vacation in Italy. In my youth, my parents had first moved to South Tyrol for many years, then to the Adriatic Sea, and certainly my great love of Italy was born on the days when we discovered one of the wonderful cities instead of the beach: Gothic town palaces and churches, Campari and espresso on the busy piazza - compared to my always rainy home in North Rhine-Westphalia, Italy seemed like paradise to me, more precisely: my paradise: Culture and history on every inch.
On one of these days, we strolled through the arcades of an old Italian town equipped with a fantastic market place and - obviously - a good perfumery. Unfortunately, I don't remember where that might have been, but probably in the Marche where we spent our holiday. I know that my mother bought the black ball that day. Because she liked it so exceptionally well, we went back to that perfumery a few days later and bought another black ball. In later years, my mother kept it in my bathroom so that she would always have her perfume at hand when she visited me. In the meantime my mother has become very old and she is not interested in perfumes any more than in many other material things. A few weeks ago, when I showed her the ball that was kept at my place, she remembered that she had once possessed it and she gave it to me. Since then I have kept it and today I have only tried it out to be able to perceive this fragrance once again:
It is an unbelievably elegant fragrance that emanates from the sphere. Because it is so black, and because it was in my bathroom in a cupboard for many years, the fragrance has been perfectly preserved and is literally flowing over me with a powerful wave of the most elegant aldehydes. So deep, so dark and yet so sparkling and tingly is this wave like the countless sequins on a deep black evening gown when the light of large chandeliers falls on it. Instead of dark, heavy masses, this fragrance seems to glitter and float - infinitely soft and deep, rich and velvety it covers my skin. The fruity and chypre parts can hardly be perceived individually, but the abundance of the ingredients is probably responsible for the effect of moving sparkle: The fragrance particles do not all unfold at the same speed and intensity, but all at the same time. Thus the fragrance remains in a shimmering movement for a long time, which is responsible for its gentleness: With all the depth with which it receives me, it caresses me.
Take a look at this pyramid: it contains everything that could shape a fragrance: Tart citrus notes and chypre-like green notes. Fruits and blossoms and full flowers of all kinds. Resins and spices, woods and musks. And vanilla and tonka. This fragrance is a cornucopia of perfume art, a kaleidoscope of the most diverse tones, nuances, impressions and associations. Fresh and characterized by light flowers, heavy, dark flowers and green, soft, flowing and sweet. Up to the base, which presents itself infinitely balanced, keeping the perfect balance between resins and woods and vanilla, my nose has perceived so many different impressions at the same time that I feel intoxicated by the beauty of the fragrance. And above all, let us repeat, there are these wonderful powdery aldehydes that give the fragrance its greatness and distinctiveness. An evening scent.
How did my mother know? Perfume was never her world, but with this fragrance she hit the bull's eye and became her signature. A mature, mature and exciting fragrance. I will always associate it with my mother and wear it only on very special holidays. My mother was not a woman who experienced glittering ball nights. But it will take such nights to wear this jewel in the future
