Look No Further For a Fresh Marine-like Bang-For-Your-Buck Scent...
Bergamotto Marino opens with a very sharp blast of green and semi-bitter bergamot, with a extremely nice melon note joining in shortly after the open to soften the bitterness while giving the scent its "marine-like" vibe. In the heart notes joining the bergamot and melon duo is a fine citrus-floral neroli note that melds with the bergamot to continue the slightly bitter nature of the scent while similar to the melon, a supporting jasmine note softens the overall profile further while adding just the faintest hint of sweetness. Base notes of ambergris and oakmoss add a nice backbone to to the citrus-floral and marine nature of the scent. Projection is average to above average and longevity is very good.
I really did not have much in the way of expectations for my blind buy of Bergamotto Marino going in except that Bourdon was the nose behind the scent, giving it some nice pedigree. I need not have had any worries, as Bergamotto Marino is a very fine release by Ferre that largely has gone unnoticed. It is a very different take on bergamot than I expected, instead using the green and slightly bitter aspects of the bergamot fruit more-so than I have seen elsewhere, while utilizing the melon effectively as a marine-like support, with an overall sea-side like semi-sharp aqueous feel to the overall combination without the dreaded use of calone. The neroli and jasmine both support the bergamot and melon with the same juxtaposition of sharp and slightly bitter with soft and slightly sweet. That is brilliant stuff that only one of the best noses around could pull off so well. Finally, the ambergris in the base is trademark Bourdon all the way and fans of his other compositions will recognize his fingerprints on this one pretty quickly. Bergamotto Marino is a very pleasant surprise that not only exudes quality in its Frederic Malle-like classy upscale bottle, but the juice inside is every bit as nice as its housing earning a very good to excellent rating of 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5 and a strong buy recommendation at the "silly money" price it sells for on eBay and at discounters online.
