Animalic Beast
Stag is about the most animalic fragrance I've tried up to now. The opening doesn't start animalic though. Hard to describe, but it was sorta like 50% slightly sweet generic floral scent plus 50% opening of Zino, almost a hairspray type of smell. But the opening didn't last long and then the animalic accord kicked in. I've never smelled pure civet or castoreum but of the fragrances I've tried that are heavy in either one of those notes, Stag seemed to be VERY heavy on castoreum. Did not get any pissy civet at all. I've never smelled a stinkhorn mushroom but a quick google finds that it exudes a smell similar to rotting flesh in order to attract flies that in turn spread the spores of the mushroom. While that sounds pretty bad, there's nothing like that in Stag - the concentration of stinkhorn must be pretty low or the extract from the mushroom doesn't have that smell. Don't know. In addition to the musky, animalic accord, there is a pronounced earthy accord. Stag also seems to oscillate between very subtle leather and woody accords but the earthy animalic accord dominates.

Performance is very good. I'm still getting whiffs with movement going on 11 hours. Projection was quite strong for the first couple of hours. Stag puts Zoologist's Hyrax to shame. Due to its strength, I think it would make a good animalic layering scent if you wanted to beef up the animalic accord of a fragrance. However, Stag is without a doubt totally wearable by itself. Doubtful you'd capture any complements with it. Strikes me as a hypermasculine scent. Definitely not one for the bubblegum boys. Sampling before buying definitely recommended.

Stag is also a great value. Available in 30ml for only $75. I'm definitely getting a bottle of this baby for myself.

Avoid House of Orpheus – Unreliable, Unprofessional and Customer-Hostile
House of Orpheus is, by far, one of the most unprofessional and unreliable perfume brands I have ever dealt with. The owner, Marcus McCoy, has openly admitted that he no longer cares about perfumery, the industry or even his own customers. This is reflected in how he operates – delays are intentional, customer service is non-existent and if you dare to ask about your order, you’ll be met with hostility rather than assistance.

If you browse his own public statements, you'll see that he openly says:
• He dislikes the perfume industry and his customers.
• He only ships when he feels like it.
• If you expect normal customer service, he will cancel your order rather than assist you.
• He has lost all passion for perfume and is more focused on blacksmithing.

Given all of this, House of Orpheus should not be considered a legitimate business anymore. Any company that continues to accept orders while stating that they have “zero spoons” for customer service is one that is actively stealing from customers while refusing to uphold basic responsibilities.

Buy at your own risk and don’t expect to get your order, your money’s worth or even a basic response if something goes wrong.

Sequences from Silver Nights
A dream crosses a dazzling beam of light, a crackling bright noise in the rearview mirror, silver-bright and frost-cool, from the night into your thoughts. A greenish mist flows within, its spicy bitter valerian roots. A stag has stopped in the distance. Its mist-breathing gaze freezes on your worn leather seats. Some ash falls silently like snowflakes onto the vanilla-white pheromone trails, which get lost somewhere in the moldy earth, the softly drifting clouds of morels, the terpenes of the forest floors. On moonlit nights, you follow them.

Marcus R. McCoy, perfumer and operator of House of Orpheus, claims to have acquired the language of plants from shamans and the craft of distillation from the origins of alchemy. His creations move beyond the physical, transcending liminal boundaries. He writes hymns to Greek gods and burns incense for them. Sometimes perhaps also leather and valerian.
The signature of his fragrances is mostly bright, cool, slightly sharp. This is also the case with "Stag," the stag, which is again carried by this dazzling frost-like overall impression, from which spicy-bitter, valerian-root green notes initially crystallize. There is also animalistic musk, which likely consists of the pheromones of castoreum and civet, with the latter clouding sharp-leathery aromas over the vanillin notes that lie somewhat balancing beneath the animalic heart, which is expanded by subtly carrion-like stinky morel aromas that become increasingly earthy in the base, creating for a few hours the moderate image of a forest floor with mushrooms, sharp-leathery, slightly liqueur-like, oily, musk-silver shimmering valerian puddles. This works as a fragrance much more wearable than it may sound.

Incredibly warm and cozy, furry, leathery, and a little sweet. So masculine. Maybe it's the pheromones, but I find this scent so relaxing.

Animalic at first too prominent, then earthy, spicy; in the heart it smells leathery, becoming more moderate with vanilla in the drydown.

I can't make anything of it. Animalic, musty earthy, like vanilla pudding. Not bad, but also not exciting.

In the dark of the forest
Between smoking morels
Drips the temptation, resin-sweet
The power of the antlers seduces
Lures you into green darkness

I experienced it!
Letting an animal hug me
so close, so near, sharing the same breath…
Being one with all of creation!

Dirty smoke, a slight vanilla undertone, and clear animalistic hints, with the civet not being too overpowering. A brutal scent!
