Hippie bourgeois
The opening of Smoke for the Soul is fairly powerful and mostly centered on cedar-incense, balsamic notes, sage, citrus notes (notably something zesty-aromatic like bergamot), a load of spices (pepper), something slightly fruity – like tea – then a not-that-solid tobacco note, which is basically just a sweet-fruity-soft-herbal note as in many mainstream tobacco scents. More than tobacco, say just a herbal accord *with* a whiff of tobacco out of the bag, but actually smelling more of sage (and bay leaf too?). Anyway, nice, one of the nicest Kilian’s perhaps – but I am not a fan of the brand, so this rather means I just don’t consider this completely tragic. It is undoubtedly pleasant to wear, as much elegant as effortless and laid-back, and smells rich, decently satisfying and fairly substantial. The contrasts between tart-zesty-spicy bergamot-citrus notes and woods-tobacco make it a perfect all-year rounder for pretty much any situation, as it’s fresh yet dark, understated but distinctive, smoky but bright (and so on). The problem is that, well... none else mentioned it but I smell a bold similarity with Terre d’Hermès on the drydown. It settles quite on the same woods-herbs-citrus-spices structure in my opinion, and smells fairly similar. Which makes the price even more irrational than it was already... but well, it smells nice, so if you’ve money to waste, it won’t be a wrong choice.

Schietsack de luxe
In official German, these cubic meter-sized bags are probably called "polypropylene bulk/ disposal containers with loops." The all-round service provider for home and garden around the corner calls the thing in straightforward North German style simply "Schietsack." Garden waste in, call, and the next day it’s gone.

I smell grass. Normal, slightly silaged (from silage). Cannabis - which I don't know anyway - doesn't need to be brought up. Then Aspecton-thyme, in other words: syrupy and thickened. Flanked by essential colleagues from the home garden, like Thuja. Quickly, a damp, needle-like forest atmosphere forms, which reminds me from a distance of 'Ormonde Man,' but primarily of the unfortunately heavily synthetic 'In the Woods' by eSENSielle. Even today, it seems to me that there’s a lot of lab work involved, especially because of the fresh (ISO?)-touch. Plus a bit of citrus.

That was the perfumey approach. The mixture undoubtedly has something of a pile of fir and especially Douglas fir and Thuja trimmings with a few layers of grass in between, which has been mushing away since the last mowing (it’s silaged, after all) before it ended up in the bag.

Well, it’s a bit spicier. At least our Schietsack couldn't boast thyme. And the sludge that collects at its bottom certainly smells…uh…more robust or stronger than today’s cream. It smells more like "Schietsack de luxe" here. But at some point, we apparently filled the cubic meter, and we can now leave the garden topic behind.

Let’s turn to a spice mixture regarding which I can't quite make sense of the details. For example, I also think of cumin sweat and dry, woody nutmeg. In general, a strong shift has begun. From late morning on, I suspect I'm dealing with a completely different scent. The spice has turned bitter, as if it had been roasted too long in the pan (before being used in a curry). Accompanied by a completely unfruitful hint of citrus fruit residue. Underneath lies, already quite close to the skin, a narrow layer of wood that initially comes across as somewhat high-quality, before a polish scent spreads throughout the afternoon - supported by the spices. Hmm. Even if our Schietsack stands half-filled overnight in the driveway, the neighbors won't fill it up right away. When it comes to such things, we are quite village-like in our street. We certainly don't need to protect the thing with a weatherproof painted wooden lid. Yaaaaa, the Schietsack idea has reached a natural conclusion, and now it really is enough.

As it progresses, various aromas waft around, which nevertheless deliver an astonishingly straightforward, almost conservative men’s scent overall, with spicy-needle-like wood and a pinch of nutmeg, which is supposed to disguise certain artificial wood tendencies. Another bitter note could come from tobacco. Above it hovers a clean aura. Tea might be involved; however, I could well imagine that light wood with rosewood (linalool?) and a hint of clary sage (aha, see above!) has been enhanced. I don't smell marigold directly; perhaps the announcement is merely a character hint towards bitterness. Everything is well done, and it’s even perfectly suitable for fans of classic men’s fragrances. I just don't understand who among them would want to deal with the Schietsack - even if it’s "de luxe" - to get here.

At some point, our diffuse, creamy-grassy base re-emerges, and the whole affair drifts into the vague as evening approaches. I think of various things: fresh vetiver plus synthetic wood. Possibly a hint of smokiness from the myrrh corner? Dark-sweet, without really being able to gain ground. Nevertheless: It’s quite bearable.

Conclusion: A strange work. Somewhat erratic. Certainly not bad and definitely varied.

I thank Ergoproxy for the sample.

Vancouver Island, BC
Its name is a little misleading, as it is not a smoky scent - 'for the soul' - yes, that can be accepted, as it has quite a lot to offer. A friendly and knowledgeable lady - whose encounter inspired me to write my blog yesterday - conjured it from her sleeve after two other wood scents I had come to try had only managed to be 'quite nice'.

I like wood scents that are more than just 'woodsy' and warm. Smoke for the Soul is the scent of a northern forest - but not a winter coniferous or taiga scent, like Thundra or Replica - Soul of The Forest. Instead, it is the scent of a forest in temperate latitudes - with bright grass and mossy tree stumps in the clearings - where one imagines that perhaps the fairies dance in the silver light under the full moon.

The eucalyptus gives it a bitter, slightly pharmaceutical component - very pleasant and unusual - and without overly pronounced pharmacy connotations. It is joined by a variety of brown and green accords - some woody, some herbal, some balsamic. Thyme and something slightly resinous like thuja or cypress are noticeable - and birch and tobacco bid it farewell with a brittle, almost gall-like seriousness.

Conclusion: across from the city of Vancouver on the Canadian west coast lies Vancouver Island, the largest North American Pacific island, as large as North Rhine-Westphalia. The island is densely forested, and largely this forest is a primeval forest, a temperate-moist one - and Smoke for the Soul smells a bit like this forest.

Legalize It
Actually, I had almost given up on By Kilian as a brand - too expensive, too nouveau riche, too much copying, too much presentation. Bombs like "Back to Black" remained on the shopping list or at least in the back of my mind, but the quite numerous new releases only attracted me sparingly. And just thinking about the A*Men clone made me feel like my attitude wouldn't change anytime soon... and yet today "Smoke For The Soul" landed on my wrist - wow, how consistent I am :D The smoky name matched my mood & the increasingly colder & grayer day, the bottle shone at me in silver & smelled not at all or very tame from the sprayer.

First thoughts: oh oh, I know this one from somewhere. Please not another blatant steal. Quite strong, brown, green, this one. Piercing eucalyptus, unpleasant sage... But who does it remind me of? Or maybe not a fragrance, but a memorable scent that occasionally wafts past you on the street? Bling, a light bulb went off... This smells damn like marijuana! And thus the related scent was clear: the black Afghan from Nasomatto as a light version. But also the in-house "Pure Oud" or "Wonderwood" evoked memories. Good and bad. I like "Smoke For The Soul" and smoking is good for the soul... I'll leave it to others to decide^^. Later in the day at the gym, I felt ashamed, but by then the piercing stoner coat was almost gone, leaving behind creamy, almost bright incense, calming tea & darkest musk. A fine base that you don't often see from this house. And for those who enjoy the beginning & don't mind a few silly looks, even those who like the smell of smoking, there's really no turning back, hardly any alternatives.

Bottle: the eye smells too - wonderfully pretty as always.
Sillage: strong, especially at the beginning, you won't escape a few "Oh, a stoner..." looks. Later, it becomes nice, bright, everyday suitable & muted.
Longevity: 7-9 hours is quite a statement & lasts longer than any joint.

Conclusion: with "Black Afghano", surely the clearest, prettiest & most realistic cannabis scent on the market & not much more... but it impresses me enough to give it a thumbs up.

Biedermann auf Abwegen
"Smoke for the Soul flirts with a forbidden herb" it says flirtatiously on the official website. Now, I don't want to question that the gentlemen and ladies at Kilian consumed all sorts of forbidden things in their youth, yet - a real association does not want to establish itself for me.

The fragrance initially skillfully combines a creamy base note with spicy elements. Bright wood tones can be discerned, harmonized with aromas that faintly remind one of steamed vegetables. This mild and richly creamy mélange is virtuously infused with a smoky tenor. And thyme and fir gradually provide a greenish hue. Quite unusual, yet also a bit staid.

After two hours, the fragrance then takes a turn, and the formerly pleasant trails prove to be increasingly stuffy. Rubber abrasion, herbaceous-bitter notes. Is this the disreputable trait that by Kilian wants to associate with an otherwise rather homey creation? There has been some flirting with something that is characterized by half-hearted execution. Unfortunately, I can only give it the label "slightly annoying" in the long run. I am far from an "Addictive State of Mind."

Less smoke, more herbiness. Thyme and tea combined with spiciness and greenery. Unusual and possibly a bit risky.

I don't smell smoke. For me, it's a beautiful, initially slightly fresh, medium sweet-spicy scent that has a hint of grass. For the soul.

While the idea of a combination of eucalyptus, resin, and fruit is good, its execution - like with many Kilians - is unharmonious.

Gentrified Interlude Man. If you smell something green here, you get real bang for your buck with a pack of sage candies.

Green-herbaceous psychotropic scent.
And yes, the pupils do dilate: Very unique, it can truly become addictive.
