Coca Cola with a twist

Be aware, this is not a linear cola scent from opening to drydown. I was really hyped for this release by Kilian. I wanted a cola scent anyways. The instant lime-cola opening blew me away. Unfortunatly yes, it do fades quickly but for me the cola note is still there but way-way in the back supporting the cedar, the nutmeg and the cinnamon making them sweeter. The drydown hours after fades into this sweet fresh vanilla coca cola with cinnamon and i love it. Not heavy on the nose, not overly sweet, and not generic or too linear but as i said, I wouldn't use it as a daily personally it could tho. Suited for both cold and warm weather. The performance is average tho, solid 6-7 ish hours. It's worth the money if you know what you're getting. Very unisex imo. Definitely test and/or sample before buying.

Middle-of-the-road woody/citrus, coke-ish but barely.

First wearing of By Kilian Bad Boys Are No Good But Good Boys Are No Fun (from the My Kind of Love collection), a travel size of which I bought due to its reported cola smell, and certainly there is somewhat of an attempt to recreate the sort of fresh caramel citrus fizz that usually amounts to a cola smell, but this mostly smells like mixed citrus/woody designer-ish mix with hints of sweetness, and not a lot there overall.

I’ve not tried much of the My Kind of Love collection so I do not have a working sense of its quality or focus, but I’m a little disappointed in this specific offering, given that it doesn’t smell much like cola nor is that lovable of a generic, designer perfume, either. I’m not exactly sure what the perfumer was going for in this creation. It’s not bad, but it’s not especially good, either.

Fortunately, it performs decently, though. It doesn’t appear to be for sale through normal retail means anymore (it was released in 2018) so I assume it’s been discontinued.

Totally forgettable

I'm still on the hunt for the perfect cola scent, so I blind-purchased a 10ml travel spray of BTBU. Thank goodness I bought this travel spray, I couldn't be more disappointed. I already had Mancera Tonka Cola and Roja Enigma, the first one had a very realistic cola smell, but it was too sweet and cloying. The second one had a delicious cola opening, but the drydown is all vanilla and amber, which I don't like. So let's move on to BTBU: it smells like a cheap and fresh men's deodorant, like Axe/Lynx with a nice hint of cola. But it's just a hint that doesn't last long. About 30-45 minutes the cola disappears and the only thing you smell is the deodorant. (Un)fortunately this smell lasts much longer than the coke smell. It has good longevity, but who wants to smell like that?

Terrible on my skin

Put it on and immediately scrubbed it off so really cant comment on longevity etc.

This is another one that smells repulsive to my nose, I know its a me problem and I'm yet to find out the note that is the source of the upsetting smell lol but a few other perfumes do this to my nose and they all smell the same! (like a dirty dishwasher with rotting water and bad breath) but don't really share a similar profile or perfumer etc. No cola, no lime, nothing but rancid water. The other ones that I get this specific smell from is Commodity Wool and Magnolia, Ghost in the Shell and Shes an Anomaly by ELdO

Born to be Unforgettable

Really woody and spicy upfront, lots of cedar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. I’m getting black pepper also. It settles down into more of a lime-heavy cola scent after about 10 minutes. Got to say at this point it reminds me really strongly of a Yankee Candle I used to have; Vanilla Lime, not that I’m picking up on a lot of vanilla in the actual scent itself.

The cola notes fade quickly and after that it’s a fairly generic citrus-cedar scent. Unfortunately there’s something resinous, pine-like, and conifery about it that reminds me of those magic tree car air fresheners. It projects strongly and lasts the whole day, although it does come across quite artificial and ultimately made me feel a bit nauseous and headachey. At this point I tried layering it with Commodity Gold- to amp up the vanilla, which did help to rescue it.

Although not as expensive as some Killian scents (currently, anyway) I do feel it’s overpriced for what it is. I’m glad I tried a sample first as while it was an interesting novelty to try it’s not one I’d enjoy wearing long term. It’s certainly unforgettable, although for me not exclusively in a good way. The search for my perfect cola scent continues!
