Literally a Patch of Patchouli!
Get out a spade, go out into an Indonesian garden and dig up literally a patch of patchouli, complete with leaves and roots with soil still clinging along, and you will have essentially the opening of L'Artisan Parfumeur PATCHOULI PATCH.

This is deep, earthy patchouli, not the chewy clean kind with the texture of watercress, but the seriously soil-covered kind. In fact, this seems pretty close to dirty hippy patchouli: lightweights had better stay away!

After several minutes of this earthy stage, PATCHOULI PATCH finally evens out to a lighter patchouli drydown. But to wear the drydown, you have get through the opening, which is a true litmus test for patchouli tolerance. No real surprises here: L'Artisan Parfumeur uses literal rather than metaphorical names for most of their creations, and this one is typical: PATCHOULI PATCH you asked for, and a patch of patchouli you'll get!

I find this fragrance to be rather longlasting with relatively big sillage--more than I have come to expect from this house.

Masterful and polished blending of materials.
I’m wearing my older style bottle of Patchouli Patch and it is gorgeous. Naturally, it is quite patchouli-heavy at the outset, the raw, chewy, earthy natural “dirty” kind. However, under Bertrand Douchaufour’s expert hand, it is smoothed and rounded out with the addition of some particularly complimentary materials; anise, a bit of plum, some vetiver, violet, all on a musky base. There is the lightest, kiss of sweetness, just enough to brighten the composition, with restraint. This is rooty/earthy and beautiful, like a fistful of herbs and soil, but as the other notes wake up and come forward, it becomes smooth and refined, robust, yet polished. This is a really lovely composition of notes that compliment each other and are perfectly weighted under a masterful hand.

Ghostly osmanthus
I was never able to perceive the fruity-floral effect of the osmanthus in Patchouli Patch. Ineed, I would have loved to smell a bit of one of my favourite floral notes. In fact, because it wore so similarly to Etro’s Patchouli on me – a wash of cold, dry earth, enlivened here and there by tiny flourishes of herbs and woods – I sold it off not two months after purchasing it.

Midnight in Paris
ripe plums lie on the ground among the violets, star anise smells to me like finely ground cloves ... where from?

I stand in the antiquarian bookshop, take in the slightly dusty air and the dim lighting, photos of artists from the past hang on the walls, a slightly earthy smell emanates from the cellar ..

or have I ended up in the Moulin Rouge after all? Ah, plum liqueur is served... small bouquets of violets in glass vases smell beguiling... and another glass of plum liqueur!
The iris powders eagerly, I get warm, I take off my fur coat and put the osmanthus flower in my hair.

My companion leads me into the basement rooms, which exude an earthy smell; the walls here are wood-paneled with inlaid work in cedar and sandalwood. We reach a salon with a leather chaise longue and leather armchairs, take a seat and enjoy the pleasant jazzy atmosphere.

This perfume reminds me very much of some old fragrances from the 1920s or 1930s, hence the journey between locations or even times like in the movie "Midnight in Paris".

Pharmacy in the countryside
(!old version, before sale to Puig!) Strawflower, patchouli and synthetics. As Luca Turin writes, a giraffe under the sheets. How does the giraffe get under the sheet? For me, the immortelle is too much immortelle, and not enough strawflower. The latter was one of my first fragrance-making experiences. Twirling this immortelle in my fingers, at 7 limes, hearing it crackle, and then the sweet scent ... Immortelle is rather spicy.
Immortelle, patchouli and an indeterminate synthetic form a triangle. A perfect interplay that cannot be put into words. The form is further filled with substantial, warm, fresh, herbaceous and spicy notes. And funnily enough, these are the most obvious on the outside.
A thoroughly accessible everyday fragrance with a distinctly sophisticated style, decidedly close to nature, modest, never too quiet, never too loud.

(The Puig version I smelled last is irrelevant, as the lawyer says. The product has absolutely nothing to do with this review)

stronger and darker patchouli image converts to softer and lighter patch on musk, on a light base of a woody accord, long lasting
