Fresh, semi-tart, floral--easily enjoyable
Sampling Perris Monte Carlo Bergamotto di Calabria (from the Italy collection), the tartest of the three entries I’ve tried from this house, albeit with some restraint, like Cedro di Diamante, of which it is reminiscent in its citrus dominance (bergamot, to Cedro’s lemon), with pepper, woods, iris, and musk. BDC is also laden with orange blossom, orange flower, petitgrain, and jasmine, so there’s a hearty floral component to it that is maybe not so present in Cedro, which lands in slightly sweeter territory. Bergamotto is more to the floral side, with the bergamot less dominant in it than lemon in Cedro. Overall, it’s well rounded, an easily likable fresh scent for the warmer weather, especially.

Bergamotto di Calabria is priced at $190 for 100ml and is sold through Indigo Perfumery, Luckyscent, and several department stores in the US. As with the other entries I’ve tried (Cedro di Diamante and Arancia di Sicilia), I regard this as good value, as the fragrance offers some intrigue but is quite pleasant and versatile. Still, Arancia is my favorite of the three, but Cedro and Bergamotto are both nice, as well.

From the Scent Construction Kit
Uncommented Fragrances No. 133

Perris Monte Carlo released three summer fragrances in white bottles last year (Bergamotto di Calabria, Cedro di Diamante, Mandarino di Sicilia) that I liked immediately. Of course, a certain enthusiasm for colognes and their variations is required, but assuming one brings this preference along, these three new representatives of cologne are small lovingly designed works of art, as they cleverly vary the classic orientation of Eau de Colognes and Kölnisch Wässer by emphasizing a different accent each (Cedro: citrus-green tones with a musk base; Mandarino: fruity notes; Bergamotto: ethereal hesperidic oils).

Bergamotto di Calabria falls slightly behind the other two representatives in ratings and assessments by other users, which is certainly due to the fact that Bergamotto di Calabria is the most classic, meaning the most traditional, from the scent construction kit of Eau de Colognes by Perris Monte Carlo. Bergamot and/or Petitgrain, Neroli and/or orange blossoms, and a woody base are, after all, standard components of all original Eau de Colognes or Kölnisch Wässer, which have burned themselves into the memory of some as the scent of 70s refreshing towels.
On the other hand, brands like 4711, Farina, and others are experiencing a real boom in Kölnisch Wässer with new innovative variants, so it seems that Perris Monte Carlo has recognized nothing other than the signs of the times.

In the case of Bergamotto di Calabria, bergamot and the even sharper petitgrain initially prick the nose, an opening that I particularly appreciate, then it softens and is replaced by the typical neroli scent, but then develops a heart full of gentle flowers, ultimately fading into a warm-soft woody base (and here lies the difference to the classic Kölnisch Wasser, which tends to rely on the harsher cedar wood).

This is not spectacular or new, not at all, but reinvented in such a beautifully simple way that it is simply enjoyable. Those who appreciate Kölnisch Wässer will surely like this scent. Those who are not a fan of this fragrance direction will find nothing to do with Bergamotto di Calabria.

Classy, sparkling opening with bergamot and bitter petitgrain. Pepper adds a nice spice and neroli brings freshness. Later, gentle wood.

Bergamot and Petitgrain prick sharply into a floral heart and a woody base. A hint of classic scents from the 60s emerges: lovely!

A beautiful, greenish bitter start with citrus notes, followed by rather bitter flowers and a slightly creaky sandalwood note. Classically elegant.

Earl Grey tea - fine, light peppery, floral mix - delicate and sweet - base of woody + powdery + oak moss. Comes alive in warmth = superb summer cologne.

A very fine scent, more cologne than citrus fresh and nicely rounded. Fresh and a bit floral, this bergamot with a wood finish.

It's probably the most unremarkable scent I've smelled in a long time, but the citrus is very juicy at first.

Alcoholic, bitter bergamot in the opening, which quickly transitions to a woody base. Nice cologne.
