Where does the woodpecker come from?!
“Mama, can I play with Timmy?” “Who is this Timmy?” “He’s the cool woodworm boy from the neighboring branch.” “What’s so cool about him?” “Mama, he knows everything and he has a window to the outside! Timmy is sooo cool that he can hang out of the window! And...” “Mäxle, I don’t want to hear any of that! It’s a really dumb idea, you know, the woodpecker is lurking out there!” “But Mama, pleeease!” “Only if you promise me to stay away from the window! And don’t be gone long, we’ll eat soon.” “I promise, Mama! What’s for dinner today?” “Hazelnut leaf cream soup, tree bark roulades with peppered wood puree, and for dessert, flambéed wood shavings with vanilla-nut pudding.”…
Later at dinner: “Mama, Timmy said the world is a wooden disc. Is that true?” “Oh Mäxle, what does your Timmy know… The world is a tree with many branches, on which leaves occasionally grow. Day by day, we, decent woodworms, eat our own ways through the wood of dried branches to become beetles after the Great Sleep.” “And Mama…” “Now please stop chattering and chew nicely!”
Late at night: “Mama… Mama!..” “What do you want, Mäxle? *yawn*” “I was just thinking - if our tree is the whole world… Where does the woodpecker come from?!”
No worries - there’s no worm in there :) The scent is very pleasant and harmonious, even though it doesn’t experience any significant development. Only the initially strong pepper subsides over time, but remains clearly perceptible, while the sweetness intensifies towards the end. It’s a mild, green-spicy wood scent, characterized by a strong powdery iris note. Burning wood… I don’t know… at most flambéed. It is subtly and pleasantly smoky, but there’s no campfire to be smelled for miles. The wood feels very light, ground to powder and processed into cream. Overall, a balanced fragrance composition - distinct green (from my perspective, hazelnut leaf, but rather the green, unripe hazelnut itself) is tempered in its bitterness by just the right amount of sweet (not cloyingly sweet) vanilla, which in turn is very flattering, dancing with the aforementioned pepper and smoke. And to my delight, the claim I read somewhere (which also encouraged me to buy it) was confirmed - a little flash of my beloved Epic really does shine through now and then, albeit very muted. Could it be thanks to the pepper or the smoke?
Conclusion: an interesting all-rounder, calm and light. Not a block of wood, spice bazaar, vanilla gourmand, or incense bomb. Yet it definitely has that certain something for me due to the delicate bitter green-nutty component. The longevity is in the medium range at 5 hours. The sillage is not overwhelming, which is why I find it subtle enough for work. For a big evening appearance, it might be too quiet. The beautiful scent is available at a relatively affordable price. What more could one want?
