CARDAMOM STEALS THE SHOW
Santal Austral Extrait opens very wood and iris forward, like pencil shavings wrapped in dry sandalwood. It feels cool, austere, and slightly dusty at first. As it dries down, the sweet cardamom really takes over and the scent shifts into a warm, spicy composition, which makes the opening and drydown feel almost like two different perfumes. That’s the main difference compared to the original Santal Austral Eau de Parfum, which is much less spicy and not as cardamom heavy. In the extrait, the sandalwood often feels overshadowed, which is ironic for something with “santal” right in the name.
I like cardamom and I appreciate all the ingredients here, but I was not exactly wowed. For the price, it feels a bit simplistic, especially when there are better spicy sandalwood options on the market that offer more depth and character. Projection was fairly average on me, nothing dramatic, though it does last a long time. Also, despite the almond milk note, I would not call this a milky or creamy sandalwood at all. This is spicy, dry sandalwood. Overall, it’s nice, but it didn’t sweep me off my feet.
