Quite luxury in a bottle !
So, IRIS by Le Galion…oh well, in my iris-centric perfume journey this is a big chapter!

Many of you may know how some iris perfumes go full on carroty, earthy or even a little weird?
This one doesn’t.

While it’s not something groundbreaking or avant-garde, I admire it the most among iris perfumes because it has this classic effortlessness! It is purely ingenious and elegant from start to finish. It possesses the kind of elegance achieved when something is perfectly balanced…and that for me is a very difficult task!

To achieve an iris-centric perfume, easy to wear, not dramatic and not something that collapses in the dry down, is a rarity.

In the beginning you get this airy, almost weightless floral iris, not the heavy battery root. Here, they’re just a bit of brightness maybe a touch of citrus or something aldehydic, but nothing sharp or perceptible. It’s like the smell you would expect from the dewy iris flower petals. Then, as it settles, the orris comes in. It is soft, a little powdery, like powder on warm skin. This stage stays for 4-5 on my skin and then a woody musky accord of sandalwood with clean musk creates a clean veil that stays with you. While it is not screaming for attention it leaves a mark.

So, Iris by Le Galion is closer and more intimate compared to Iris Silver Mist by Serge Lutens, is less soapy compared to Infusion d’Iris by Prada and is less green and less sharp compared to no.19 by Chanel.

I don’t know why but when I experience this refinement, I get almost nostalgic and I recall something that I heard in another context:

Effortless and polished,
yet never pretentious !

Modern Elegant Clarity
The perfumer Thomas Fontaine has apparently revised all the first new fragrances of the relaunched brand "Le Galion" based on the original formulas. Especially the soliflore fragrances of this brand, "La Rose," "Tubéreuse," "Iris," and also "Snob," show a clearly recognizable signature to me, which may also be due to Paul Vacher, the original perfumer and owner of the brand, as all fragrances share a surprisingly clear and less voluminous structure with clear proportions that seem to have shed the "muff" of past days. I am not familiar with the old original fragrances from that time.

Even the top note of this Iris surprises with fresh bright and almost fruity tones, which is not only due to the very restrained citrus notes but apparently also the ambrette seeds, which form an airy connection with the now perceptible clean musk. Iris is immediately noticeable and combines with a slightly rosy hint to create a well-known elegant powdery floral bouquet that permanently defines "Iris." A trace of galbanum seems to secure a small bitter green corner, without ever coming in the way of the majestic iris. Even a half lily blossom seems to mimic the galbanum, missing any lush weight and spreading a creamy white floral hint. In the base, the "clean laundry" musk combines with the creamy soft floral notes and a bit of dry cedarwood; everything wonderfully beds under the slightly dusty powdery scent of the iris.

"Iris" is consistently a clean and clear iris scent that places the classically elegant beauty of this plant in the spotlight and never feels heavy. Through the combination of the "clean laundry" musk and the creamy floral accord, Thomas Fontaine makes the fragrance feel very contemporary and has certainly banished the animalic aromas that were present at the time. It is a beautiful, rather feminine everyday scent with good longevity and slightly restrained sillage, skillfully combining a certain carefree cheerfulness with the rather muted melancholic elegance of the iris. It combines modernity with the shine of past times. What one could criticize negatively is its unspectacular pleasantness. It does not clash and aims to please. Perhaps it lacks a bit of bite, strength, or innovation, but iris fragrances like this one seem to me to fit more with gray flannel suits or white cotton blouses, which often have a very "correct" aura. At the same time, it also seems casual enough to be well-worn in a normal workday... and that seems to be its advantage. Personally, the fragrance takes on a too feminine direction that makes it unbearable for me. But that doesn't matter here at all.

This fragrance and all the other wonderful scents of the relaunched brand "Le Galion" are definitely worth a test. For this year, six more new fragrances have been announced, including three extraits.

subtle seduction
citrusy, light, a bit spicy.
the mimosa already creates a delicate transition to the heart note.
iris, floral, but not sweet, noble, soft, elegant.
the rose notes remain very much in the background.
and it doesn't take long before everything floats on a bright, powdery musk cloud.
subtle it is, bright and delicate.
dreamily beautiful.
and in combination with the skin scent, very bright and feminine.

Only for Women?
Friendly, green, elegant, powdery and herbaceous.
Noble, clean, unisex and soft.
Unobtrusive, close to the body and delicately floral.
A fragrance for all occasions.
Fragrance twin: Hiris by Hermès. Very distinct!!

P.S.: Iris by Galion can also be worn by men who love iris scents. Not feminine at all.

Unexpected Hit
Somehow I am always on the lookout for the perfect fragrance for myself, even though I already own a few. Here, not only the fragrance notes and their balance are crucial, but equally important is the effect the scent has on me. More on that later.

Actually, I wanted to buy a different fragrance at the souk, but a few other scents caught my eye from the vendor. Since I really like iris and am testing a bit through the selection, I had to get Iris by Le Galion as well. And what can I say: I have found a new holy grail (there is not just one). It has everything: freshness, powderiness, floral notes, bitterness, cleanliness, and elegance.

Unfortunately, it is rather close to the body, even though I would love to drown myself and my surroundings in the sillage. However, its closeness creates something very intimate and cozy. I spray the fragrance on and feel happy and secure; it reminds me of my mother, who still smells of Rive Gauche, but memories tend to swirl things around.

I will treat myself to a large bottle of this fragrance soon, and preferably a backup as well, you never know. Currently, I wear it to sleep because it calms and satisfies me so much. I really don’t want to be without it anymore, and I have this effect very, very rarely with a perfume. And I am so incredibly glad that I discovered this scent so randomly. So, cheers to the souk, otherwise this would have never happened.

By the way, if someone likes something extravagant, this is not the right choice, as the fragrance is very balanced, without major surprises. But understatement can be so perfect. Ah...

Iris and lily flowers lost in a bouquet of mimosa. A more flowery Hiris by Hermes.

A delicate, soft, cool, and elegant iris scent. Charming and understated, yet white and radiant. Could also be from Chanel.

T. Fontaine has created a really beautiful iris scent here! Clean, powdery, sounds very bright. I could have done without the ambrette seeds...

Ethereal delicate iris, like skin cream, later powdery and mineral. A scent can't be more "white" and yet so alluring at the same time.
