Pushing Up the Lily
What I like about Le Labo is their scent compositions are not only memorable, the perfumes project, and have no-nonsense longevity and sillage. It's as if someone said, "We're going to do this right." From their website: "Imagine a brand where two specialists in fine perfume who love swimming against the current and, inspired by Mike Mills' declaration about 'fighting the rising tide of conformity,' decide to bring together, in New York, some of the very best 'noses' on the planet. Their mission: to create exceptional fragrances, with no eye on cost and one goal - to create a sensory 'shock' as soon as you open the bottle. They succeeded. I don't even like the smell of lilies, the primary note here, but I love Lys 41 and its imaginative use of supporting florals including the exotic Tiaré, the gardenia often seen in the hair of Tahitian beauties in paintings by Paul Gaugain. Lys 41 did indeed shock me with its sunny beauty. This is no lily meant for a coffin. Instead, it raises Lily to a height that could conceivably revive, if not a person, a dead nose, anyway. Not the least dark or cloying, nor overly sweet, Lys 41 is femininity in a bottle on a bright spring day.

Lys 41
First of all this a Le Labo fragrance so do not expect a lily soliflore, you are getting instead a large white flowers bouquet featuring beside lily a great tuberose, a slightly indolic jasmine and tiare on a bed of buttery vanilla with a coconut echo.

Lys 41 starts big with the white flowers, tuberose and lily as prima donnas with a shy touch of green and plenty of creamy vanilla. As the fragrance further evolves the green note becomes stronger while the vanilla creaminess is more prominent, a coconut note starts to grab attention probably due to tiare flowers that have more emphasis in the middle notes of Lys 41. This coconut note is light compared with Datura noir or Vittoria Apuana and could be a good choice for somebody who likes floral fragrances but does not enjoy so much coconut in perfume .In the basenotes a nicely done woody-musky accord is laced with a lot of vanilla that succeeds not to be gourmand.

Sing me to sleep
You know what this smells like? Sleep. And I mean that both because it’s a terrifically boring scent, but also because it is so yawn-inducing it becomes fascinatingly soporific (that cozy, intimate, and obviously terribly pleasant feeling you have just before falling asleep). So in the end, not a completely negative kind of boring. Almost a creative take on it. Anyway, Lys 41 is basically a really simple, graceful and quite plain white floral scent with a woody-amber base and sweet-dusty nuances, with also something that reminded me of suede, but I guess it must be the musky note. Don’t think of anything too powdery or sweet, it’s rather a delicate haiku played on creamy-woody notes, as much pleasant as a bit dull and plastic. The evolution if basically non-existent, but the persistence is good and the projection is unexpectedly quite sharp. On one side, you can smell here the peculiar way of Le Labo of playing around common accords and notes with a sort of “modern” and kind of suspended, ethereal, aseptic treatment: but also, I think they sort of “crossed the line” a bit with this, meaning that the mild, “lunar lab” discreetness becomes just more plain dullness here. Or well, just this close to it. A synthetic candy worthy a try, but nothing more in my opinion. I completely agree with deadidol’s take on Basenotes about this.

Madison Avenue
Winter in New York City. Between the high-rise buildings on Madison Avenue, snowflakes are reflected in the glittering facades of the shop windows. A woman, wrapped in a short black fur jacket, a casual Marc Jacobs bag in her hand, her blonde hair perfectly styled despite the wind, walks purposefully along the street. Perhaps she's on her way to an art opening in Soho or an aperitif in a bar. A true New Yorker. As we stop next to each other at the traffic lights, I am suddenly surrounded by a fabulously creamy, sweet and woody scent. It's as if she's just returned from vacation and still has the scent of the sun, a luxurious hotel lobby and the finest suntan lotion. I am fascinated and can't concentrate on anything else but this fragrance.

She seems to be following the same route as us, heading towards Fifth Avenue and Rockefeller Center. With every block we walk together, the scent unfolds more. I notice white flowers, first and foremost the beguiling sweetness of jasmine, paired with a beautiful lily note. Underneath lies a bright, radiant vanilla note. Heavy and radiant at the same time, individual and incredibly elegant.

That winter evening in New York was actually the first time I asked a complete stranger on the street about her scent. A little surprised, but friendly, she told me: Le Labo Lys 41. As I unfortunately don't have the budget of a New York It Girl at my disposal, I quickly put it in the "just dreaming, but better forget it very quickly" category. I sprayed myself a little wistfully at the Le Labo counter in every upmarket department store in New York and decided to forget about the fragrance back in Germany. Which wasn't difficult, as it wasn't available to test anywhere.

So I was all the more delighted when my boyfriend gave me the fragrance for my birthday six months later. Even though I hadn't spoken about it once since then! But he also thought the fragrance was simply stunning and said that I needed it... (what would a true perfumer like to hear more than that ;)) I've loved the perfume ever since, I don't really wear anything else on special occasions because it's simply addictive - and probably also because I associate it with such wonderful vacation memories. Incidentally, the longevity and silage are well above average, which also puts the price into perspective.

Heady white florals that mellows out nicely, quite complex
On opening: very heady blast of white florals, jasmine, orange blossom and tuberose. I don’t know that I even get any lily. After a couple of minutes the tuberose becomes more prominent and sweet, mellowing out and adding a very soft vanilla note. After about 45 minutes, a tiny whiff of an animalic note appears! This one ends up morphing quite a lot and is more complex than it seems at first sniff.

A sunny day is a lazy day. In this case a sunny white floral is a lazy one. Simply follows the rules and does not surprise in any way.

Beautiful, classic, feminine, creamy white floral. I like it despite usually not being a big fan of white florals.

Creamy white-yellow floral bomb. Heavy tuberose, a healthy dose of ylang-ylang, plus a light jasmine all atop soft-serve French vanilla.

Densely floral and soapy. It's an intricate mix of white florals. Very reminiscent of a luxurious hotel. But the denseness can be cloying.
