Does NOT smell like rain . . . (Sept. '25 update: "but")
Man, I was excited - nature scents are what I'm after, and in my search for a rain-smelling scent, this option kept coming up online. However, I personally don't smell the rain at all. Nor the scent "after the rain." Huge let down. What I do smell is juniper. Lots of it. Like I've cut open a fresh juniper berry and am holding that right under my nose. And nothing else. I do kinda like how juniper berries smell . . . but do I want my body to smell like them throughout the day? Hmmm, for me probably not. Note, juniper berries are what gin is made from and smells like. So that's the flavor. All this said, the scent does smell high-quality, like the ingredients are top notch. Can't recommend it given the one-note scent and sharp profile, as I can't envision a social situation where this would be useful. But I got a friend who loves this scent and has made it his signature, so maybe it's just another lesson in how you gotta try everything on your own skin and see how it mixes . . .
SEPTEMBER 5, 2025 UPDATE - When I wrote the original review above in April, I had just started my fragrance journey. Fast forward about five months, and I've now tested numerous scents and have a better idea of what I like and what's objectively good. I tried Baie 19 again today, and it's better than I originally thought. I revised my rating up. I can parse out the petrichor now, though petrichor is kinda similar to juniper. But that's a good thing, because they amplify each other. My understanding is that after it rains, plants naturally emit petrichor into the air. So while the scent still doesn't smell like rain, nor the scent after the rain, I'll now begrudgingly say it's perhaps "rain ADJACENT" . . . close enough to be in the general zone . . . just be aware that the juniper vibe is really dominant and what it's really about. But with my, ahem, more refined palate now, I gotta admit this Baie 19 scent is quite unique, and guess what - enjoyable. Today had me thinking that this would be a great change-of-pace scent for Spring in particular, or maybe the more temperate days of summer. That said, for me it's still too dang expensive for the value proposition to be there. But I’m thinking about finding a second-hand, discounted bottle. And it's definitely worth trying for yourself!
Also, side note: D.S. & Durga's "Steamed Rainbow" truly smells like rain, if you're still looking for a true rain scent. The scent is fantastic, but problem with it is the projection and longevity are terrible - the smell evaporates almost instantly, like rain when the sun comes out. So if I could only buy one, I'd still get Baie 19 over Steamed Rainbow.
