Tonka 25: Floral, Fresh, Clean, Cozy, Dusty, Comforting and Versatile.
I was already aware that this wouldn’t be a typical gourmand style Tonka and I am here to confirm that this is rue. When I first learned that Le Labo created a fragrance named Tonka 25, some fragrances immediately came to mind: Tonka Imperiale by Guerlain, Mugler Pure Tonka, Hermes Vetiver Tonka to name a few. This is nothing alike the aforementioned fragrances. I bought this fragrance blindly based on my obsession for this house (bottle #18) along with several reviews and opinions provided by some of the most trusted noses in the community. I've worn this 4x in the last week and wanted some real insight before posting a review. On initial spray, I’m detecting a clean-crispy white floral (orange blossom) with a mild citrusy hue and I am immediately reminded of the orange blossom in Neroli 36 and Fleur d' Oranger 25. This is fascinating to me for two reasons. One being that I have rarely found orange blossom to be an attractive floral when it is a prominent/dominant note in a fragrance and secondly, I have never liked Neroli 36 or Fleur d' Oranger 25. Within two to three minutes, the scent develops from a citrusy floral to a powdery, soft, smooth, clean musk and the transformation is impressive. As the scent continues to evolve, the vanilla +cedarwood+musk+tonka juxtaposition emerge creating an irresistible and subtle, dusty, nutty-like, quality. I cannot keep my nose off of my wrists at this point. Full disclosure: I have caught myself moving around to catch wafts of the fragrance throughout the day.... : ) ...... The fragrance is soft but tenacious and very comfortable to wear. The scent is long lasting. It is incredibly appealing in my opinion and I have received an unusual amount of compliments from family, friends, coworkers, and one stranger (today.) I've read some make a correlation between Tonka 25 and other scents in the Le Labo library and I can sort of relate: Vanilla 44 (dusty, musky, woody, dry), Another 13 (clean, crisp, musk), Neroli 36 (clean, bright, citrusy-florals.) All in all, Tonka 25 is a real pleasure to wear and I consider it to be a versatile scent that I can see myself wearing on a regular basis throughout the year.

A lively red
My only other fragrance I own with Tonka Bean is Curve Connect...a $15 dollar fragrance that is actually quite nice for its price point. It was always a random Autumn reach for me. This is a much more refined and 'grown up' version of that. Considering I first used Curve Connect as a 15 year old, and I am now 30, it seems fitting.

If you've smelled Tonka Bean fragrances, you won't be too surprised by anything here, but you will be pleased. The Tonka remains present throughout, and top notes settling from a bright, spicy, almost fizzy top into a warm, mildly powdery base.

I have always associated Tonka Bean with Autumn and this will be no exception. I bought a sampler and next year I may buy a small bottle of it. It's not something I would wear daily but I would wear it at home when I am especially feeling the Autumn vibes, or if I am out of the house and on the town or with friends during the Autumn months.

Overall, I really like this. If you're looking for an autumn scent that will impress but not overwhelm (as I was), look no further.

Sweet, woody soap.
I get exactly three elements from this fragrance: a warm wood, a cold powder, and vanilla. To me, that translates to sweet soap, which is one of my least favoured profiles.

It's a well-blended, high quality fragrance that I would consider truly unisex. Very safe, generally likeable, and a jack-of-all-trades if you enjoy the scent. To someone who can appreciate it, I'm sure this would be a perfect daily driver.

First Sunrays!
Yes, it is linear and yes, there may be nothing seemingly special about it. For me, however, "Tonka 25" is particularly beautiful. And it forms a lovely counterpart to my "Botany Bay," whose simple arrangement as a slightly spicy freshie comes into play especially in spring to autumn.
With "Tonka 25" in the name, Le Labo refers to a tonka bean that is bottled in the inventory. As has often been the case with this brand, I can perhaps faintly sense one part of the name giver; often, other ingredients are predominant. Here, it is clearly the cedar for me as the fine spirit, defining and woody-fresh, while the 24 other correlates take a back seat.

The art of this composition lies, in my opinion, in the interplay of a soft orange blossom with a hesitant sweetness - woven into the light cedar. The orange blossom is gentle, far less zesty than, for example, in "Terra Bella" by Dior. The two fragrances can certainly coexist. "Tonka 25" is not an orange blossom scent. What is nice is that this orange blossom remains subtle and never pushes itself to the forefront.

It is indeed the mentioned sweetness that takes the stage. I think of a light vanilla or tonka note, woody, never becoming annoying. It should be noted that this fragrance is definitely not a summer freshie; I enjoy wearing it right now, at 5 degrees and rain, and perhaps envisioning a summer as it could be this year. A wishful-thinking summer fragrance! Additionally, a few musky breezes pass by from time to time, briefly illuminating and then disappearing again.

Overall, "Tonka 25" is characterized by an inherent warmth, whose satisfaction is capable of giving off the first iridescent sunrays.

The Characterful Cloak of Cedar and Tonka
Tonka 25 is my first fragrance from Le Labo.
For a long time, the scents hardly affected me at all.
Their minimalist bottle design, as well as many reviews or descriptions of various candidates, left me cold, especially in the rather high-priced segment.

Now the time had come, and Tonka 25 was part of a swap.
Regarding Le Labo, I first did some research and discovered two interesting things.
The bottles are generally refillable, which also comes with a monetary saving.
According to my research, refills are only possible at the Le Labo Store in Berlin.
While there are a few exclusive partners of Le Labo across Germany, refilling a used bottle is only possible at their own store in Berlin.

I was also curious about what the number behind each fragrance name means. If you take a look at the portfolio, it quickly becomes apparent that each scent is assigned a number.
Le Labo defines the amount of ingredients/fragrance components this way.
Thus, the Tonka fragrance contains 25 ingredients, Bergamote has 22, and Santal, for example, has 33.

Now let's get to the scent itself.
The tonka bean plays a central role, as the name suggests, yet it is not the dominant part as one might assume.
Much more, the cedar determines the direction and fundamentally provides a dry and woody character.
Tonka and vanilla clearly show that they are also at home here, but they must adapt to the cedar.
As a result, the adaptation means that the scent does not come across as too sweet, and the vanilla does not represent the often overwhelming component.
From my perspective, this is a delightful combination.

Minimal interference comes from the orange blossom. It is not perceptible on the surface, yet it mixes in intermittently and, upon closer "sniffing," does not seem harmonious to me.
As already mentioned, this note is rarely noticeable in the overall composition, at least in my experience.
I do not detect musk at all, but it likely contributes to a certain smoothness and pleasantness that the scent also brings.

In summary, Tonka 25 is a dense and voluminous fragrance, but by no means unpleasant or cumbersome.
Attributes such as woody, dry, spicy, slightly powdery, smooth, and characterful describe Le Labo's perfume aptly from my perspective.

Projection and sillage are socially acceptable, yet I would not want to call it a submissive scent.
The longevity on my skin is about 7-8 hours, significantly longer on clothing.

I really like Tonka 25 and find it truly wonderful and absolutely wearable on both men and women.

Mostly tonka, cedar & orange blossom; a bit like lavender & sugared almonds. Somewhat designery, but done well (excl. the rubbery musk).

A slightly more refined version of Lush's Twilight body spray, with less depth, more rounded, a bit sweeter and lighter.

I mostly get the cedar and orange blossom...nevertheless while first unimpressed I did grow to like this more with repeat wears.

Cozy creamy tonka, orange blossom with a skanky atlas cedar. Amazing release.

Equal parts musky, vanillic, and bitter greens. Dry and powdery. Ashy tobacco smell, kinda like a recently snuffed cigarette butt.

A very musky and sweet fragrance with a whisper of tonka bean. Has a dirty floral aspect in the opening. Slightly vintage-smelling.

Tonka in a different way ...
with green speckles, soft O-flower &
woody nuances.
Styrax & musk wrap it all up.
A subtle sweet veil :)

Anyone expecting a super sweet gourmand will be surprised. Instead, a wonderful cedar aroma dominates, with sweetness in the background.
