99 balloons... uh... no,... 31 roses?
Hello and welcome to a new comment from me, my sniffing fans :))
Today I come to Le Labo - Rose 31. I think it's such a strange name again, where you don't know why the fragrance is called 31. Of course I can imagine some reasons for this, but I couldn't find out the true origin of the name. But it is usually the case that a manufacturer wants to use it to indicate certain things during the production of the fragrance. An address or place, for example. Or maybe it was the 31st attempt where one was finally satisfied with the composed rose scent?

Or maybe 31 types of roses were used? I Banause had not even known that there exists more than one kind of rose, because rose is rose, isn't it? Or is it? Haaaalt, of course I'm exaggerating a little with my lack of flower knowledge :D It's already clear to me that there are so many varieties of roses. Over 600, I hear. In the botanical family of roses, the Rosaceae, there are even over 3000 species in 90 genera. But of course you can't imagine that all of them are the roses you know from the flower shop and so on.

No, the rose plants, which are a huge family at all, also include "things" like quinces, raspberries and even ladies' coats... uh, ladies' coats are their names, he he he and of course I mean the plants and not clothes. Now do you understand why I know so much about botany? Because everything is so terribly complicated! :DD

Well, I'm finally getting to the scent after a long wiseass talk!

The fragrance:
I smell roses, who would have thought that?! But one must not imagine this now in such a way that it would only smell intensely like roses, as with many other rose fragrances, no, very quickly woody notes are added here, some oud, resinous incense and a slight sweetness, the origin of which cannot be found out, it could come from the resins, or perhaps also from the roses themselves. It's not musk, by the way, because I can't smell musk until later.
Anyway, the beginning is beautiful (dark)-flowery and despite the spicy Bei notes quite feminine.
A little later the roses become a little weaker, the oud becomes a little more intense, so that the fragrance appears a little stronger.
The base still smells resins and oud, as well as roses, of course. The musk gives off its sweetness, but I find that the sweet scents smell like a mix of musk and amber. But there is also a fragrance in the base that I don't like so much and that would be my only criticism here: cumin. Probably not everyone's cup of tea can smell this scent, which makes the scent more spicy and has a somewhat unusual scent for me, which I don't like so much. But well, Rose 31 is still a fragrance that I think is quite successful on the whole, especially since the cumin is getting weaker again in the later base and you only smell rose, resins and woods again.

The Sillage and the shelf life:
The Sillage is quite okay, so neither particularly strong, nor really weak. Can you smell one for a while, so everything is okay :) I find the shelf life successful, because applied in the morning it lasted well until the evening, that was a little longer than eight hours.

The bottle:
The bottle is my biggest criticism. It is simply cylindrical and merges into a dome at the top. It is finished with a grey lid. The label is trimmed to old (especially with its typewriter style) and looks good, but all in all I find the bottle a bit too simple, but at least not ugly. Banausen... uh, purists will like him though, won't they, dear Christine? :DD

So, that was Rose 31. I know that many people may have a hard time with rose scents. The rose is one of the most commonly used fragrances, but it can also smell in so many different ways that it is very unusual. It can be quite possible that Rosenhasser can find therefore also times a smell with roses quite well. Here, for example, I find the rose quite successful, because it smells quite nice, without being too intense and sour, and its interplay with the woody notes is also quite good. Well well, here the oud is reasonably strong and oud is a fragrance that needs getting used to and doesn't please everyone. But in my opinion it already harmonizes well with the rose. The same applies to cumin.

Nevertheless, I would recommend you to sniff it here, because I like the fragrance in general. It also seems to me like a nice all-rounder that you can use at any time, even if I would tend a little bit more towards autumn. It can be used as a scent for the day, but it fits a bit better for the evening.

And that brings me to the end again. And you have learned, like me, that there are so many types of roses that you can no longer keep track of them. And who would have thought that some of these roses were edible fruits? And how could it be otherwise, everything is even more complicated. With strawberries, for example. Strawberries also belong to the rose family. But the flesh of the fruit is not the actual fruit of the plant, but the many small seed-like things you see on the surface. These are the same tiny nuts, so that the strawberry also belongs to the nut fruits. BÄM!!! So it gets more and more complicated... (or as it is called in Star Wars: There is always a bigger fish!!), mu ha ha ha ha.

All right then, have a good night, everybody! :)

Men Can't Have It
Just because they put a male label on it, doesn't mean we women are going to stay away. I'll never forget the day I walked into Saks, a virtually new perfumista, and was greeted by a Le Labo counter I'd never noticed before. Shopping intentions forgotten, I went over, sat down and was soon gasping at Rose 31 on the paper strip plastered to my nose. Perhaps it was partly the pepper and spices not listed in our pyramid. Rose 31 has "Grasse rose, cumin, pepper, clove, nutmeg, olibanum, cedar, amber, gaiac wood, oud, cistus, vetiver and animalic notes" per luckyscent. Its easy to smell the cumin and the pepper and I thought, "Do I really want to smell like curry?" but the rose and the frankincense and the oud and the musk expanded into my nostrils and I thought, "Yes, I do want to smell like a dish of curried musky rose, I do, I do!" Rose 31 is one of those scents that make logic pointless. The salesperson looked askance when I said I wanted it and whispered, "It's for men, you know." I said, "Too bad, I'm buying it!" She grinned at me conspiratorially when I also bought Oud 27 (since surrendered to hubby who loves, loves it). To reassure her, I also bought Lys 41, after all I am a female. What else could I do? Rose 31's bold pulchritude announced, "Buy me, I am yours! Get my sister and brother, too." Obediently I wear it now and then to feel beautifully curried.

Cumin infused confusion
So far I did not really click with any perfumes from Le Labo. Their Santal 33 Eau de Parfum was a fine piece of perfumery, but it had a few notes that kept bothering me. I had high hopes for their Lys 41 Eau de Parfum, but I found it severely lacking creativity, even though I am a sucker for white florals. Roses, on the other hand, do not do much for me. So I went into Rose 31 with little to no expectations. Turns out I could not be more wrong.

The rose in this composition is velvety soft and gentle. It is there from beginning to end without losing its smooth texture. What makes it really come to life is the well-dosed amount of cumin in there. I know cumin is good for spicing up florals, but it is the first time I see it work so well with a rose. I do not get any funk or sweaty associations this time. In the base I get woody notes mainly. Cedar, oud, iso-e? I can't really tell. It feels highly polished and fleeting and it works like a charm with that cumin-infused rose, that much is sure. On top of that, it has a long reach without being pushy or loud. Ideal for casual outdoor settings.

So I thought I was a white florals type. When it comes to Le Labo, however, I am on team Rose. Clearly it pays off to look outside of one's comfort zone. This goes straight onto my must-have list.

peppery animal
With me, no typical rose scent comes across. I find that good! Get immediately in a good mood when I smell this fragrance. Peppery, cumin for the animalistic, has what clean (not direction detergent ;) and soft, but is also sexy! Very nice to wear especially in autumn and winter. Reminds a bit of Rozu by Aesop at the beginning, then goes in a different direction, not so spicy (like Rozu).

It's Manly Madness, but They've Done It Right!
Yes, indeed! This is a Rose for Men! I knew immediately upon application that this was not for my delicate feminine skin. Not only is it not femme- it's not really unisex...I am astonished because I even consider Fahrenheit to be unisex and wore it for years- gender labels be damned. But this is truly a high class masculine take on the Rose. It's rose, but without a hint of sweetness any where If I were working at Le Labo (Dream of most magical dreams!!!) in the Branding & Marketing Dept. or Chemistry Lab (I'll climb my way up- I swear!), I would have called this one Rosewood 31. Right off the bat...Chopard "Madness" came to mind! Pink pepper is replaced by cumin, here lighter on lychee and a more earnest attempt on the Gaiac wood- but these two are kissing cousins. Rose 31, begins a more polite refined cousin of Madness that isn't checked out on a 'day pass' from the sanitarium. But that same musky deep burgundy rose and gentle spice moving into a rosewood finish is there. Much respect. This starts out so dry and dignified, not a hint of 'the vapors'. The musk keeps intensifying going more into a Nasomatto tirade of brutish bravado. A few hours later, this turns dark, devious and peppery on my skin, perfect for eveningwear. This is too sexy for my Toyota Prius... and fluffy white dog...more appropriate for the 58' black Jaguar my husband drives and the piercing dark eyes & sleek long legs of the black shiny greyhound-pitbull mix that runs the house demanding everything and getting everything he demands. In brief- must love dry pencil shaving cedarwood, pink peppery note, rosewood, manly 'Afghano' musk (not white musk, not Egyptian musk either!)and the fresh scent of true herbal rose without sweetener to pull this one off.

Unisex rose plus clove/cinnamon with a strong opening blast and big personality. Dries down to a nice bright musk.

Dewy rose with a layer of sweat from the cumin. Surprisingly animalic/sensual. Dries down squeaky clean. Approachable but still odd.

Spicy-sweet powdery rose with a prominent earthy-woody backbone and touch of green. Like a full rose bush dusted with cumin. Smoky drydown.

All Le Labo perfumes are followed by a number. That number indicates how many ingredients it contains. Rose 31 has thirty-one components.

Woods and vetiver are so finely tuned that they form a pleasant soft background for rose. Cumin adds some more spice. Fine and exciting!
