Steamed Sage

This one stays close to the skin, never too loud. It opens with sage but slowly turns smoky, like herbs steaming over hot coals. The smokiness is soft, not harsh or overpowering, which makes it easy to wear. I like it, but it didn’t knock me out. It’s interesting, just not a love. Performance is average, don’t expect a huge projection. Thanks i don't smell the dreadful ambroxan, but some might get disapointed.

I suppose that it's a good fragrance for days when you want something low-key but different. I suppose somehow i see it well on nice shirt, since it's more like a personal scent for when you're in an introspective mood. Worth trying if you like quiet, herbal smoky fragrances that don’t scream.

Clean Girl aesthetic

At first sniff, I wonder 'Who sprayed Baccarat Rouge 540 in here' because it's got that familiar, sugary Ambroxan brashness to it that makes my heart sink a bit. I can tolerate this accord, by the way, if I manage to convince myself that it's really black pepper that's causing this synthy blur. Thankfully, these molecules evaporate quickly, leaving behind the ghostly scent of magazine pages, the kind of industrially clean, plush air piped into corporate offices, and what I imagine space to smell like. After a while, it smells like walking into a lumberyard where cedar logs are being planked by a band saw, the air vibrating thickly with sawdust and hot metal-on-wood particles. Not my usual thing, but I see the appeal of something so plain, mineral, and radiant. It's 100% the Clean Girl aesthetic.

Two wears in and I have this pegged as one of those stripped down Iso E Super/wood/musk things like Another 13 or Glossier You. It is just featureless enough to allow people to project whatever they want to experience or feel onto it. Anonymous, androgynous, etc. I have no particular feeling about this genre but I recognize that it is meaningful to Gen Z (and it makes sense that a kind of perfume will resonate with one generation and go over the heads of others). The only thing I will note about this particular exemplar, though, is that the drydown is sour and bad tempered, an odd misstep in a template that seems like it should be easy to nail.

I had fond memories of Raku - tested for the first time in a small boutique in Barcelona. Back then, I was immediately taken with it: fresh, green, soft, somehow clean and creamy at the same time. As many have written before: milky creaminess meets grassy woods. And yes, that's exactly what I smelled there. Maybe it was the vacation mood, maybe the air in Barcelona - but I was thrilled. If pure milk were to flow through streams, it would probably smell like this.

Now, at home and tested as a sample from Pafory, the picture is different.

The opening is okay: citrusy, green, slightly peppery. You can immediately tell that there’s a bit of molecular DNA in play - musk, Ambroxan, that typical clean softness. So far, so good. Since I perceived the scent as linear back then, I thought nothing more would come. In the drydown, I remembered it as a creamy skin scent.

But then something strange happens. The scent takes a turn halfway - towards metallic, almost medicinal. Something between clary sage, cedarwood, and a strangely medicinal-cold tone. Confused, sniffing at my wrist, I sense something ominous. This note stands out, lurking underneath and lingers quite a while through the middle part. For me: absolutely disturbing.

Then I realize what this note reminds me of. The whole thing somehow reminds me of the DNA of Cloud by Ariana Grande. I ponder further and notice how an association spreads: Baccarat Rouge. I am confused … did I receive a wrong sample? Was the bottle filled differently before? This incredibly pronounced note sticks to the musk.
And that’s annoying. Because it doesn’t fit together.

I remembered Raku as distinctly softer and more neutral - almost like an elegant everyday fragrance. Now I perceive it as significantly more masculine, angular, and unfortunately also more synthetic than it should be. The lovely green freshness is really sabotaged by this strange undertone. The question remains: Is this Raku?

At Last

Those who have a larger collection know what I'm talking about; at some point, you've smelled everything except for nuances. Almost everything.....
Raku is available for sale on the Les Bains Guerbois website as of today. I received a sample in advance.
Upon spraying it on - heart attack! A wave of pepper carries the scent, not biting or sharp, but embedded in fig milk, in which a cedar branch was soaked for several days. So round and creamy, as if iris also resides within, not just musk.
Lemon joins in, by no means dominant, bringing a freshness that makes the scent perfect for spring and summer, although I consider it suitable for any time. All genders welcome. I could bathe in it.
Raku completes my collection. "I'm done." Pepper as a spice was still missing.
The brand has also convinced me. I like the majority of the scents. 2018 Roxo Tonic and 1979 New Wave would be further recommendations for testing.
