Brav through the Sunday Afternoon
Today was a rainy Sunday. Given the weather, it was clear that one would rather stay at home. Actually just right to dig out fragrances to wear and test that you are not quite sure how they will be received by colleagues, friends, acquaintances, neighbors, and other people.
One such candidate for me is Gran Valor, a branch of the Tabac series that has been waiting quite a while for me to check it out thoroughly.
The reason for my hesitation was shady experiences with other Tabac branches and the previous reviews.
In principle, Gran Valor starts with a restrained mandarin plus some spices, including soft cardamom and a hint of cinnamon.
However, the very beginning somehow feels, I don’t want to say synthetic, but you immediately notice that you are dealing with a cheaper drugstore scent. That doesn’t have to be directly bad, but it also carries a slightly musty, outdated vibe.
Classic old-school scents from the 70s and 80s still have something sublime and valuable in their scent structure. One searches for that in vain here, which shouldn’t be surprising.
Only later, when it becomes spicier and woodier and thus somewhat "more mature," does the "great brave one" rise above itself.
With a longevity of several hours, it presents itself as absolutely okay - but still, I am glad that I didn’t have to take this little water out into the public. No, Gran Valor Tabac is not a bad scent, but it feels like a baggy tracksuit that you are reluctant to meet others in. Who knows what strangers might think of you.
Additionally, I had to ask myself, like my predecessors, what was thought of the scent concept or who the target audience should be. For the younger crowd, it is definitely too conservative - for the more mature, probably too underdeveloped and not a real alternative to the classic Tabac Original.
No - to wear the "great brave one," you have to be quite brave yourself. The rain has stopped, the Sunday afternoon is coming to an end along with the last molecules of the dry down. Maybe I’ll go out a little after all ... but then with a decent perfume.
