Well, someone has gotten stronger.
In my younger years, I owned the Tabac aftershave, so it is never to be thought of as missing from my fragrance wardrobe.

A masculine aftershave that evokes Old School vibes for many people, and it conveys the same to me!

It provides security, satisfaction, and above all, a wonderful companion. If you like fresh, spicy aftershaves, every man should have this in his fragrance wardrobe, in my opinion.

Aftershave Journey Part 14 - Modern Classic, Strictly Limited!!!
New arrival! And then there's an aftershave for a new aftershave journey! And from Tabac, no less, strictly limited... Phew, I had to jump on this one!
BLACK EDITION - wow, when I saw the first statement from Yatagan I thought, "A new Tabac? Yes!" and even though Yatagan doesn't necessarily celebrate this release and I always enjoy reading his statements & reviews, there can be different scent perceptions... otherwise it would be sad.

And especially Iso-E-Super is a case of its own - and in combination with this aftershave, it can indeed divide opinions... at least I think and suspect: For fragrance lovers or fragrance groupies (like me), this scent won't leave anyone cold and there will be opinions, and I find that nice.

Ultimately, I welcome the classics from the house of Tabac, as well as modern interpretations or completely new paths - I like to stand by my position here, but I think Tabac should remain in all generations and also serve as an "entry fragrance." And I find that for me, I can forgo one or another designer scent, but with Tabac or generally Mäurer & Wirtz, I have a different attitude, on one hand promoting a family business with a glorious fragrance tradition, on the other hand an emotional component with flashbacks to my grandfather.

When applying to the shaved skin, it was a very romantic and familiar feeling - since I use the Tabac shaving soap, I additionally applied the scent to my skin to filter out any differences for myself - it really felt like a perfect date, that moment when you get to know someone completely new and yet immediately feel that certain something.

Scent-wise, I see strong similarities with the great original, however, I perceive this new one as a bit greener at the beginning, the woodiness then slowly sneaks from the background to the forefront.
It then develops a kind of transparency - the skin becomes soft-creamy like the scent or vice versa, like a glance in the mirror. Delicate soft leather lightly embraces the skin.

I think the bottle will receive the most approval and it reflects this transparency, at first glance yes BLACK EDITION, but as Axiomatic mentions, the bottle knows how to transform slightly while remaining distinctive, you have the opportunity to experience so many beautiful color facets from BLACK to gray, so many facets - just for that reason I find it a shame that this fragrance event is limited.
The bottle also fits wonderfully in the hand and you can dose perfectly, it doesn't come out too little and not too much... just right!

In conclusion, I discover on the packaging a successful connection of tradition and modernity - and yes, I agree with that... I also hope that through the advertising on Instagram from Tabac, other target groups will take notice and especially "younger" people will dare to open up to the brand and ultimately come to appreciate the classics.

Thank you for reading!

A Right Turn!
Unexpected and all the more delightful is what Mäurer & Wirtz has now brought to the market.
Will the autumn of 2024 bring the required change in terms of fragrance composition?

Yes, here the house shows foresight and courage, offering something reconciliatory for all those who have not been able to stand sweet scents in recent years.

Bold, honest, and commendable, it is refreshing to name the components of this fragrance version outright.

And leaving nothing to chance regarding the design of the legendary bottle.

I must admit that my anticipation over the announcement of a dark version of the classic Tabac Original After Shave Lotion was dampened when our highly esteemed Parfumo Yatagan was disappointed by the high concentration of Iso-E-Super.

Well, this molecule can react differently on various skin types and thus alter the scent progression.
It may be that some have a diffuse, almost soft-focus-like association when smelling it.
Others, including myself, experience the scent more clearly, almost crystal clear in the woody area.

Out of curiosity, I opened both the bottle of Tabac Original After Shave Lotion and the Tabac Original Black Edition and first sniffed both dosing caps.

While the original smells as usual of aldehydes, woods, and warm amber, I do get a hint of the original scent in this version, but it is significantly lighter and darker-toned, more modern.

For mechanical reasons, there is this time a…

Shake and clap!

The beginning of the scent progression is surprisingly quiet; I can hardly perceive a scent at first, which is probably due to the synthetic nature.

But then the citrus opening slowly reveals itself, very gentle and also with green, herbaceous impressions. I assume that the declared cedar leaf is supposed to smell like this.
What is very pleasant is the initially sparse dosage of pepper, just barely noticeable.

It will take a while before the next stage of the fragrance becomes recognizable.
In general, the scent progression takes its time with all its facets.
More on that later.

The lavender is fresh and again greenish modulated; the molecule Clearwood works excellently here.
No sting, no overpowering, just a soft feeling.

Perhaps it is also this soft feeling of Iso-E-Super that Parfumo Yatagan criticizes.
Understandable if one expects a fragrance with clear contours.
But here I would like to point out that Tabac Original has always been soft. The softness and roundness are among its characteristics.
Therefore, it is only consistent to reach for Iso-E-Super to enable a rounded fragrance experience once again.

And before I know it, the heart of the original scent peeks out.
Yes, the house has meticulously ensured that tradition is incorporated within a contemporary context.
Warm woody, wonderfully ambried, and sprinkled with bright herbal notes, the old, now rejuvenated heart of the classic beats.

More than an hour will pass before the distinctive base takes over.
I call that molecular mastery!
Because suddenly everything becomes crystal clear.
Yes, the positive side of Iso-E-Super.
A strange freshness leads to the final stage.
Peppered, a comfortably dark lounge makes its presence known.
Aspects of leather, dark woods, and a grayish smoke define the zeitgeist of this version.

It is astonishing that everything remains light and airy here.
The successful contrasts of freshness and cozy wood feel invigorating.
I, at least, could smell it for hours and feel comfortable.
Because the impressions of the original merge with the new.

And as Profumo Ergoproxy says?
It comes down to the skillful use of new molecules.
Here I was taught otherwise.
Hats off!

Now to the bottle.
Certainly a milestone.
While the glass initially appears matte black, its optical property changes in backlight. Transparent, gray smoky, and elegant, the material now allows a glimpse inside the amphora.
If that isn't the most successful trick of the house.
An absolute eye-catcher and worthy of a beautiful place at home.

As for the longevity, I can confidently praise the continuous quality of the line. Just as the original aftershave provided long hours of scent, the dark version fits in perfectly here.
The scent will remain detectable for hours.
Although the projection is initially weak, sometimes close to the skin, unexpected scent clouds are generated that can certainly be perceived by those around.
Applied in the early evening, I could still smell the fragrance the next morning.
Subdued, yes, but still present.

And so I would like to summarize the character of the fragrance as follows.
Warm woody, ambried, peppery leathery, and cool smoky.

Coolness, minimalist elegance, passing the baton to the next generation.

Yes, I am convinced that the house has taken the right path.
Should Tabac Original Black Edition be limited, then hopefully as an attempt to adjust something traditional and thereby gain new followers. Perhaps to compose future works accordingly.

And I am optimistic that the experiment will succeed.

Thank you, Mäurer & Wirtz, this time you got it right!

Is ISO-E really that great?
Uncommented Fragrances No. 189

For obvious reasons, this review is gender-specific: I apologize for that!

As a long-time Tabac user, the famous opal glass bottle of Tabac Original After Shave Lotion (not to be confused with the other versions of Tabac Original) is still a staple in my bathroom, even though I now prefer other post-shave products, such as "Lotion opaline | Les Bénédictines de Chantelle."

In my opinion, the aesthetics and functionality of the Tabac bottle are unmatched, and if someone were to ask me about the most beautiful flacons in the history of fragrance, it would make my Desert Island list, alongside the flacons of Mitsouko Eau de Toilette and the cylindrical spray bottle of Ho Hang Eau de Toilette (as a surprise guest on this list).

Of course, a bottle is worthless if the contents don't impress, but fortunately, that is the case with the three mentioned above.

The new Tabac Original edition Tabac Original Black Edition has already caused some nervousness among bearded individuals: a beautiful bottle, almost as lovely as the original in white, but how does the content perform?

After a first test a few hours after purchase, I can conclude that I find the scent only moderately appealing (which isn't as bad as one might fear when looking at the list of ingredients). Citrusy notes, pepper, and cedar leaf are thankfully identifiable, lavender and incense are subtle yet plausible, Cypriol and most of the aroma chemicals behave appropriately. However, what bothers me - as so often - is the excess of ISO-E-Super, which I usually don't find that super, as it dilutes the fragrance with a delicately woody, vaguely creamy, sweetish, and somewhat musky veil that overshadows the other notes and makes them appear warm and soft. According to surveys from the fragrance industry, ISO-E-Super is very popular.

If you belong to that group, buy the fragrance!
If not, buy it anyway for the beautiful bottle!

It takes its time.
Slowly revealing its stages.
Citrusy.
Greenish lavender.
Warm and woody.
At its heart, the original.
And obscurely smoky.
The twist!

If they had stuck with the citrus, woody, and green notes, it could have been something. Instead, the soft creamy ISO-E is bothersome.

Flashback, like Original-AS, just a bit "greener". Velvety wood-creamy caress, transparent through Iso-E-Super/ romantically applied.

In direct comparison to the EdC, the BE loses out - but still wears excellently. Woody-fresh-gently lavender and soft °°°

Well, I find the original much better.
This is a modern synthetic scent with Clearwood™, ISO-E, AmberXtreme™. It's alright.

Ultimately, the woody-fresh limited synthetic AS hopefully attracts buyers towards the classic. That would be my plan :)
