Vegetale musks
With the first three releases, Marlou has positioned itself in quite the niche. Its snuff repertoire is particularly hard to swallow for those only used to 'nice and fresh' scents and even the snobs have difficulty pulling these off in public. Nevertheless the brand has won over the hearts of fanatics for animalic scents. Personally, I find them fascinating and gross at the same time. A fun experience for once, but nothing I would consider wearing more often. Corpalium is different. It is clearly a Marlou in the sense that it is an odd scent swirling with musks, but this time most bodily fluids were omitted.

There are few animalic references. A faint leather and way in the background I get little drops of waxy castoreum. Lots of musks going on, though. But somehow they feel more vegetale than animalic. They come with a little iris and some dry woody notes, creating a warm earthy-rooty ambience. Little to no development.

It is hard to compare this to another perfume as I cannot really think of anything similar. Perhaps Nuit de Bakélite with its bitter rooty vibes. Although Corpalium comes without the florals, the extreme bitterness and all other sharp edges of NdB. Still, I must say I find this one particularly comfortable. Much more so than the other three Marlou's. Worth another wear!

Worth a sample but nothing more
Corpalium's opening reminded me immediately of unwashed hair. It's at this point that there is some sort of projection. As it quickly dries down (after about 15 minutes) it loses its projection and the woody/earthy aspects become more prominent. I did notice Fenugreek, but it's very subdued and subtle. Corpalium took on less of a hair smell and more of a skin or body smell. Not body odor, just the earthy type of smell of someone at the end of the day not wearing any scented product.

Corpalium is a curiosity - something that was interesting to sample but not something I'd bother with anymore. Guys looking for a skin/body scent type of fragrance would be better off with the Signature Royale line from Zaharoff (Signature Royale X, Royale XXX and Royale XXXL). They each offer more in a fragrance and emphasize slightly different accords.

a subterranean iris in a velvet cloak
Corpalium is the chilled earthen blooms of a sunless, subterranean iris, wrapped in a velvety feathered cloak of woodsy musk and honeyed, balsamic smoke. It’s a dark bird of myth, a single ebony plume plucked from flame, an unblinking amethyst eye, crystalline and plum dark under the cobweb veil of the pale winter sun’s sweetness. This is heart-stoppingly stunning, and I don’t think I have anything in my fragrance wardrobe quite like it.

Natural Powdery Iris
To me, Corpalium is pure powdery iris. This scent is more straightforward than the other Marlou fragrances, but still has their signature grounded natural dna. I love this scent because so many powdery irises are intentionally synthetic, makeupy, and hyperfeminine. This has so many of the same characteristics as those fragrances, but somehow is extremely natural, unisex, and earthy. It’s like Frederic Malle’s Lipstick Rose had a crunchy little sister who lived off the grid. I like this as much as its girlier companions.

Animalic yumminess
I think I must eat perfume or become nose blind very fast because I don't feel like this has much longevity on me. I sampled this at Embassy Niche Perfumes in Porto, Portugal because of the Iris notes. I adore this fragrance and see it being a signature. The fenugreek adds a pleasant sweetness; the dry down is powdery and overall it has a wonderful animalic nature. I smell woodiness from the mid notes through the dry down.

Smoky, slightly medicinal and oily woodiness and an underlying nearly culinary, animalic facet - beautiful, but TERRIBLE staying power.

this is a gorgeee powdery Iris with a furry, skanky quality. Like Marie Antoinette’s toilette, covering up the decadence of the night before

Perhaps the most inoffensive from the Marlou lineup. Very earthy and woody with an underlying castoreum leather and smoke - straightforward.

Soothing and calming, sensual, softly earthy dark and a bit mysterious. Purple powdery iris, sweet ambrette, bitter bite of fenugreek.

a faint smell of musty and dusty attic space, filled with tupperware full of holiday decor. Inoffensive, dark powdery iris. Just ok.

This is the closest perfume I’ve found to capture the dry woody loveliness of Ash from Boy Smells which is sadly only in candle/room spray form.
