A Stale Cup of Tea
As far as tea fragrances go, I've never had any big expectations from them. It kind of goes without saying that such type of scents would turn out rather weak, inoffensive, and ultimately boring. Wūlóng Chá Extrait de Parfum, however, proved me wrong, showing me there's more to a tea-centric fragrance than meets the eye. And so, I came to Colognisé hoping I'd meet another soothing cup of tea. But all I got was a stale (albeit qualitative) cold cup.
The opening feels like a generous squeeze of effervescent citruses in your cup of herbal green tea, with a realistic zesty lemon being the most prominent. The grapefruit adds a hint of tangy sweetness, while a clear sweet, floral jasmine starts to show. The green tea aroma is not as strong as I'd like, but it is definitely enough to be easily identifiable.
Once the citruses settle down and the cup of tea starts getting cold, white florals take over, with the already mentioned jasmine being paired with a clean and slightly soapy lily of the valley. They both create a pleasing soft, delicate, floral freshness with remaining hints of citruses from the opening; hard to hate, but it's also not something to phone home about.
The base brings some clean muskiness along with a lively neroli, adding more to the white floral structure, reminiscent of orange blossom with its orangey/citric attributes. The vetiver takes a very good while to show itself, and when it does, it doesn't take center stage. It adds a lightly grassy earthiness which is very inoffensive; seemingly made for people who can't stand vetiver. Overall, the only thing that saves Colognisé in my eyes is its raw material quality and blending. But as the scent itself, it feels very simplistic and a little stale, which is not necessarily a bad thing, as many people appreciate and prefer such compositions.
With all that in mind, I expected performance to be terrible. And in terms of projection, it is one of, if not the softest Nishane I have yet tested. But as for longevity, that musk-neroli-vetiver base managed to push the scent to about 6-7 hours on my skin, instead of the 4-5 hours I expected. Projection did not take such a turn, and it proved to be pretty mild, with about a one foot bubble around me for the first 30-60 minutes, then turning more intimate and becoming a skin scent after about 3-4 hours.
One good thing does come out of all of this - versatility. And unless you want to stick out and invade people's noses, Colognisé is really hard to fault. As wearable as it gets; wear whenever, wherever.
Apart from someone who really appreciates softer, inoffensive, delicate tea scents or someone who can afford to get Colognisé as a gift for someone who's not really into fragrances (blind-buy safe), I don't see any other reason to get Colognisé. It's just your regular pleasant yet unimpressive fragrance. If you want a more distinct tea fume, then Wūlóng Chá Extrait de Parfum or maybe I-III Russian Tea are more worth considering. Sure, Wūlóng Chá Extrait de Parfum is significantly more expensive than Colognisé ($150 vs $250), but if you can't justify paying that much, then I don't think Colognisé offers any better value for money.
