A gorgeous childhood memory
I got to know Oscar de la Renta when I was still a child. My mum used to have the original Oscar. She wore it at parties. I remember my dad coming home with it to her as a present after being away for work for a month. He had bought a huge bottle, and looking at the year of release he must have given it to her in 1977 or 1978, when it was fairly new. I loved it. On the rare occasions she wore it, I was very hard to get rid of, since I would cling to her until they left. I remember her clothes would still smell of it the day after, lying in the laundry basket. Sometimes I would sneak into her room and spray it. The scent lasted for days.
Ruffles is an Oscar de la Renta fragrance from 1983, so only six years younger than Oscar. I would say that it has an 80s vibe, due to the many flowers and loud expression. Everything is said and meant in the best way. Oscar de la Renta, to me, is a great house in the 80s perfume history. Ruffles has the same qualities as the original Oscar.
The beginning of this is aldehydes - mostly. After five to ten minutes the orange blossom and the bergamot show their faces and add a floral expression to the sharp aldehydic picture. A warm and deep feeling with the flowers popping up - rose, jasmine, lily of the valley - the fragrance finds its identity as a floral perfume with a slightly naughty undertone. Maybe due to the civet? I think so. Just the right amount to make the fragrance a bit more interesting. The fragrance can be a bit confusing, challenging or interesting to decipher, though, since the many floral notes keep switching places and let each one have a few seconds of fame. The landing is gorgeous. Caramel mixed with the woods and vanilla and a bit of musk - what a blend! It is long lasting, more than eight hours on my skin. And one has to be aware of the event for wearing this, since sillage is hefty. At least that is what my partner says, when I wear it.
Serge Mansau has designed the beautiful bottle. I may have mentioned in an earlier review how much I admire his work. Being a bottle-o-maniac I am never disappointed by his design. Classical and very organic. This bottle makes me think of a shell or a leaf. The only thing that I do not like is the somewhat tacky white plastic top. My miniature has a golden top, which suits the bottle much better.
I am tempted to say that they do not make perfumes like this anymore. Perhaps it is ok, since Ruffles is a snapshot of a time that I remember, and I really like this scent. To some it may be too loud and too overpowering. To me it is just right.

First a grand gown, then a cozy house suit
Ruffles is a typical scent of its time. An opulent representative of the 80s, and I think anyone who loves glamorous fragrances would enjoy it. I became acquainted with it through an auctioned mini, which fortunately still has a completely intact content. Given its age and the small amount, one wouldn't expect that, but this time it worked out again.

At first, I thought: Oh, a floral chypre. Elegant, not sweet in the opening, which reveals its floral heart rather thoughtfully but powerfully. It's pointless to try to identify every flower. Up to that point, the scent reminds me of all the glamorous perfumes that hit the market during that time, like Knowing, Coco, Gem, Diva, or similar. It's nice to have them in the collection, but I often lack an appropriate occasion to wear them. They need a grand setting, a stage, to truly shine; otherwise, I would quickly feel overdressed.

However, where the aforementioned examples often showcase a pronounced oakmoss base, Ruffles surprisingly comes across as cozy and inviting in the dry down. Thankfully, despite the honey and caramel, it is not sweet, but has a distinctly animalistic cuddly factor. The perfume doesn't make a grand statement as I would have expected. Ruffles doesn't escalate through the scent progression but rather barges in through the front door, only to then settle comfortably in the corner of the sofa, and one wouldn't really want to be alone with it. Now the scent feels less glamorous and more private, though certainly only if one feels comfortable with the hint of civet that allows the fragrance to fade in such an animalistic-cuddly manner.

Ruffles belongs to a generation of fragrances that would probably have no chance in today's market. All the more, I am glad to be able to get to know it, as it has never crossed my path in my fragrant professional life.

It has a hint of spiced vanilla cookies, but slightly bitter. Clove? Later it becomes warm floral with a subtle animalic afterscent. Civet?
