Une Belle Journée by Paul Emilien (2014)
The first whiffs that hit my nose are those of peppery flower rose, with quite intriguing and nicely captivating the attention, plastic tonalities. I would think that they would develop eventually into something of a leather quality, pleasantly cold smell texture of the new leather canvass. Let's see if that is the case. For now, an additional hint of minty-mandarin, indistinguishable in their own, yet, clearly identifiable as one concoction makes its mark on the sniffer.

With time and the arrival of the middle notes, the interplay of iris, violet, and abstract flowers takes the centre-stage. It is quite graceful and balanced an elixir, not tipping into either - iris or (abstract) flower - and managing the two floral faces of Une Belle Journée perfume in tandem; just enough to make each note appreciable, yet not allowing any of the two to egotistically push itself in front of the other.

The greater pronunciation of the iris (with some violet) in the middle parts of the composition reignited my appetite for that promise of leather I read in the plasticky tonalities of the peppery rose from the opening. However, it is clear by now, that it was more of my hunger for that 'dirty twist' speaking through that connotation, rather than the perfumer's intentions. Helas!

Another aspect of Une Belle Journée from Paul Emilien which I miss, is a coda, an ending. Just like some songs are slowly muting down the volume instead of clear ending, so is the this perfume. In awaiting the base to develop, the fragrance is quietly waning down, making an unnoticed exit from the flower party, very much à l'anglaise.

Messy of the Unpleasant Kind
Today was anything but a pleasant journey for me, as a scent rattled through all my olfactory traps once again after a long time. I don’t know if I’m becoming more tame or simply not testing every nonsense anymore - but I haven’t had any truly deep evaluations in recent months. Unfortunately, I couldn’t avoid "Une Belle Journee." Not a nice scent in any respect - quite aggressive, artistic yes, but more in the direction of "can go."

Bold and different - that’s one way to put it nicely. Terrible and unpleasant would be more honest. A tipsy (vodka?) rose scent. At the same time, there’s a minty iris. And in the end, animalistic leather. Everything flowing into one another like a cacophony - spectacularly off. And not just for my personal taste, but as objectively as possible. The animalistic finale is still the most pleasant part. The rest is a wasted artist's effort. Almost to the point of holding my nose, ears flapping, shaking my head. Paul Emilien has a few such soft & fine scents in his portfolio - this one is at the other end of the spectrum.

Bottle: I like it best in blue. Although it hardly matches the
scent.
Sillage: fortunately not too penetrating. Unless one gets hot... out of anger.
Longevity: after 5-6 hours, the chaos settles down. I haven’t been so close to washing it off in a long time.

Conclusion: by far the weakest Paul Emilien - chaotic, annoying, unpleasant. A scent for people who drink perfume.

You're being put down here. But you smell like a beautiful summer garden, with flower and herb beds and lots of greenery.

Williams schnapps? No... salad dressing with dill? There's something to that! I've smelled better herbal perfumes, but this one isn't that bad either.

Alcoholic scent, unfortunately doesn't harmonize, tipsy jasmine with spices and a hint of leather.
