A forest in my heart...
The place I live belongs to a continental climate zone which means harsh winters and sizzling summers. This fact has led me to believe that most fragrances are shining their best self either in cold or heat, suffering a considerable reduction of developing their olfactory merits when they are worn in their less effective temperature spectrum.

That never was the case with Pino Silvestre because it was always a breath of fresh forest air, incarnated by either the howling arctic winds of Scandinavia or the gentle summer breeze of the Mediterranean. The etymology of Scandinavia is yet to be decided, but since "Mediterranean" means the center of the world, then Pino Silvestre represents this term way better than any other male fragrance would ever do. Emitting its green waves from Italy, the very heart of the Mediterranean, Pino Silvestre is global, epic and staggering.

Thinking that calling it the best male scent ever made would be sort of an overstatement, I'll just say that having a place in the ten best male fragrances ever would be no overstatement at all. I have never ever confused it with any other fragrance and I believe it's so classic that it's classicality itself. Something like the olfactory equivalent of Jules Verne and Alexander Pushkin, since it's wildly adventurous and plain equitable altogether. Or something like being simultaneously complacent and not complacent or romantic and not romantic, if you like. How many fragrances would not be laughed at by making such claims, even if they are around for six decades?
And speaking of straightforward merits, who said that a fragrance has to cost a fortune to be stunning? Where I live you can have 750ml of Brut, 300ml of Tabac and 350ml of Agua Brava for 100€. Or a whole bucketful of shiny green pine cones named Pino Silvestre.

Although it was launched some 20 years later, I believe it was Europe's answer to the other iconic men's fragrance coming from the western shore. Pino Silvestre's archenemy could be no other than the most popular masculine fragrance ever made till then. In other words, Old Spice. But since they belonged to two entirely different genres, instead of a legendary battle we were left with yet another olfactory masterpiece instead.
I've heard its bottle being called tacky many times, but if I had to call it something too, then "honest" would be the word. What you see is what you get, simple as that. You buy a fragrance in a green pine cone, right? What would you expect yourself to smell like other than a pine forest?
Its biggest advantage however is its aptidude of reassuring you that everything is going to be just fine. That even if the whole world has come to your doorstep, brandishing pitchforks and torches while demanding your ostracism from their modernity land, there's still a sheltering forest to hide and prepare your retaliation. Pine cones can be surely used as a last resort weapon after all, especially when unopened. Just like the ones after which Pino Silvestre's iconic bottle was made.

I don't believe there's more than a handful of European men over forty who have never used Pino Silvestre at some point. And many of them are still proudly using it, no matter how hard fragrance evolution tries to lure them away. I believe it has a very certain association with olfactory childhood memories, and many of us are extremely stubborn when it comes to parting from them. And while most of us live in cities, surrounded by a passel of artificial smells, some of us still have a soothing pine forest forever rooted in the very centre of our hearts' geography. And what is a scent without a heartbeat throbbing it?...

A Classic Green That Still Smells Good But Has Lost A Step...
Pino Silvestre opens with a rugged blend of bergamot, lavender and maybe just a touch of anise before transitioning to its primary heart note of spruce-like pine with the lavender remaining in a supporting role, coupling with cedar emerging from the base. The pine and lavender finally recede leaving the cedar to take center stage in the final base supported by a synthetic smelling mossy musk. Projection and longevity are both below average.

Pino Silvestre is a nice woody pine scent that almost acts as an eau de cologne in its limited strength and longevity. The bottle comes in a 4.2 oz size, and my guess is you will be using a lot more of it than you might think due to needing extra sprays to begin with and multiple reapplications throughout the day. It is somewhat unrefined, quite invigorating and moderately synthetic at times, but it evokes the spirit of the great outdoors and its forests to very good effect. The unrefined cedar and pine tandem is not the kind of scent I would want to wear daily and it even seems to irritate my eyes slightly, but the fragrance is an exceptional value at the $15 or less it is selling for online currently and merits a mild recommendation outright, price aside. Pino Sylvestre earns a "good" 3 stars out of 5 outright for the scent, but much higher in the value department.

Green green GREEN!
This is one of the big three that was launched in 1955. The other 2 are Silvestre by Victor and the mighty Acqua di Selva by Victor. This Mediterranean fougere only has average longevity which is a bummer. However it's not my favorite so it's not a total loss. It is a very green and refreshing scent but I'm not in love with the opening. The Juniper Berries are harsh and it dominates the opening stages. Actually the fragrance is kinda linear so i get no relief throughout the entire wear. I mean I'm not trying to be hard on the fragrance it's just not my favorite. I only have a recent bottle so I'm gonna hunt down a vintage version. I'm gambling that'll be a better experience. The bottom line is that it's a fragrance that's on the cheap side but they're selling vintage bottles online for hundreds of dollars. The greed never ends. Cool bottle though it looks nice on my dresser lol.

One perfect scent out of a sea of many fragrances
This fragrance was introduced in 1955 and I've worn it religiously since the early 1980's. It is simple, deeply green and the epitome of masculinity. Of the hundred or so designer & niche brand scents I own, Pino is, and will always be, my default.

Although I think I have a nose for detecting fragrance notes, I don't sense more from Pino Silvestre than the most delicious, natural aroma of pine except maybe a hint of juniper berries on the high note. It is perfection in a bottle. On certain men, it is intoxicating. While I wear it all year, it may be at its most magical in the cooler weather.

It's a lighter scent and find I need to reapply every 6 hours. This isn't a problem because applying Pino Silvestre is a joy to the senses. At less than $15 a bottle, you have nothing to lose in trying this classic, elegant scent. The bottle design is a classic too. I have noticed a redesign recently, forgoing the pine cone shaped sprayer head in favor of a simpler nozzle and I'm not mad about it. The new design results in a much less messy spray. I've purchased countless bottles over the years and have never notices any marked difference with the supposed reformulations. The base is always the same.

Please, if you are looking for the perfect men's fragrance and would like something simple, elegant and natural smelling, please try Pino Silvestre. It deserves more recognition.

Citrusy pine that reminds me of green car fresheners
What I get is a fresh, powerful citrus, a touch of thyme, and a dollop of pine. When the citrus starts dying down I can detect some basil too. But don't expect anything complex, after all it is named after pinus sylvestris and the bottle is shaped like a pine cone.

Pino Silvestre is what old men in Italy have worn from the mid-fifties onwards. That popularity means the scent got heavily assimilated into industrial products. Personally, I am incapable of not being reminded of the green car fresheners by Little Trees or Magic Trees or Arbre Magique or whatever they're called in your neck of the woods, but I can still enjoy Pino on some level. The newer versions smell more synthetic to me - beware.

Mine is a splash bottle from the late 80s so I don't have to deal with the renowned messy sprayer. On my skin the juice projects for about an hour, becomes a skin scent within 2 hours, and lasts maybe 5 which is good for something that costs less than €10.

Masculinity Level: The tragic figure that is Swamp Thing.

Thyme is of the essence to Pino Sylvestre, dominating the scent, like bay leaf dominates Agua Brava. Acqua di Selva has better balance.

Pine, thyme, juniper berries and pretty much every herb, grass or plant found in an alpine forest has been used here. Pungent, harsh green.

Smells intensely natural, as if made with a mixture of essential oils. Personally, not my thing.
Also very linear with poor performance.

A disappointment, possibly reformulated. Very natural pine smell. But it is plain boring and the sillage/longevity is below par.
