Legendary
As always, some with hate, some with love. I really appreciate this fragrance and I see why it got so far. I tend to grab this in the warmer days, being such a delightful experience. Sweet, creamy, floral, aquatic, bubble-gum(ish) with even more character than a just bubble-gum. It's much more than that. Very good pick for a casual day (if you afford that) or just stick to special days/nights. I see this as a summer party fragrance. This is at least for me the best scenario but it can also be worn in many other scenarios. It has a youthful vibe but also a maturity vibe in the drydown. Performance is great and is very easily appreciated. 8 hours are there and even more if you overspray. Sillage and projection are great as well, no doubt.
You will be noticed for sure.
I feel very lucky to own a bottle of 2016 and I will keep it for special occasions.

Overall : 8/10

The Best Fragrance EVER
This is a legendary fragrance. In the words of our friend Jeremy: If you find one below 100€ just blind buy it.
The aquatic nature of this invictus, much more intense than the 2018 version (which was sweet). The 2016 is basically not sweet at all. It’s salty, tart, so so fresh, smells unlike any other perfume I ever owned. There’s no Freeze version, no Aqua this or that, which can even come close to this masterpiece.
Deserves my 9.5/10 overall evaluation.

Aquatic and synthetic
The Context

Prior to receiving this decant I was aware of the Paco Rubanne brand and the Invictus line and I was not that interested into getting anything in the near future from the brand, and then I received this sample for my birthday alongside the other samples that I’ve wrote about. Among all of them this one I used the most because I wanted to understand the notes that make the scent profile of this one. Then I purchased another fragrances and I moved on. I wear this sample at the moment when I write this review in order to refresh my memories of the scent profile and catch other notes that in the past I was not that familiar with.

The Scent

This is a synthetic aquatic fragrance that has a sharp smell from start to finish. I have the version from 2017 according to the flier and its similarities with the note breakdown. In the opening I get a strong citrus synthetic push that stays for a half of a minute, then it settles down into an aquatic, sweet but still synthetic scent. Towards the late drydown the aquatic part it
Is still present but really faint and it plays with the light woods. Overall, it’s better than I expected from these kinds of releases and flakers.

The Projection

This is a medium to a high but only in summer. For the other seasons, it is medium to weak. I find this one only working in high heat in summer, a dry one.

The Longevity

I get for this one around six hours and the first half the projection is strong on my skin. The synthetic keeps it that long. I spray this and after those six hours I still can detect that synthetic component and the woods. So, this one would be all present for a work day in an office. It is noticeable but not annoying and I imagine this would fit really well with a suit. That reminds me of a video by Kenvin Samuels about this fragrance. From what I recall he had the same comment, that this would fit really well with a suit on an office day. So, I totally agree with mr. Samuels, this is the type of the utility for this one. From the experience that I have up until this point I would say that a fougere, a leather or a chypre applied correctly would make a great office fragrance. Also, I imagine applying this one for more than 3 sprays overall and suffocating the office, but anyway.

The Perfumers

There are two noses for this creation. Anne Flipo and Nicolas Beaulieu. While I did not had high expectations for their career I was a bit surprised of mrs. Flipo catalog and vast experience. She has a lot of creations under her name for L’Artisan Parfumeur, YSL and Givenchy. Some of the most well known fragrances in the community for men and women are made by her, so she is really impressive. On the other hand, Nicolas does not have a lot of creations and no significant ones from any house, or ones that I’m not that familiar with. For this one I think they had a lot of experience on how to make a simple straight forward intense aquatic fragrance and be mass appealing, but not obnoxious like the original one, from what I know.

Conclusions

If you want a fragrance that makes impressions and has an interesting scent profile and evolution, but not that weird, I would say that this is for you. I use this fragrance as reference for aquatic type of scents but till this day I prefer Glacier Rock, from my collection. And there is also another fragrance that I purchased late that month but only the opening is aquatic, the rest of its evolution is more fougere-like. I’m not totally sure if this is the case, I am not that familiar with fougere but I know that they are supposed to represent the atmosphere of the forest and what ivy, the plant, would smell like. But anyway, solid release and good projector and good performance.

Thank you so much for reading my review! I got a little caught up on my writing, but I had more pleasure in showing my thoughts then in the last review, so I’m pretty happy with this one. I think I need more experience with aquatic fragrances. I will try in the future to find samples for 40 knots by Xerjoff, Pacific Oak Moss by Goldfield and Banks or Virgin Island Water by Creed and I will try to compare them side by side. Next review will be about Oriflame’s Blue wonders. For that one I have a good context on how I discovered this one and how my thoughts changed with just a short period of time on its actual quality.

Invictus Aqua 2016 vs Najdia vs Hayaati vs Hawas vs Hawas Ice
The Invictus Aqua 2016 is still one of my summer favorites and since I only have one full and one half-full bottle of the original, I'm already looking for alternatives. I've already worn the most frequently mentioned ones several times and would like to briefly compare them with the original here. First of all, none of them is really a clone and they are all very different from the original!
The frosted glass bottle of the original is beautifully made, but I find the chunky spray heads on all Paco Rabanne Invictus and 1 Million Flankers a bit "cheap". Sure, they are visually integrated into the design, but they are usually very cumbersome to press and squeak and creak like in an attic.

For me, the scent of the original is the perfect combination of freshness, sweetness and wearability in summer, and it always goes everywhere in high temperatures. I support it with a few sprays of Molecule 01, which goes very well together. It's lively and "young", but labeling it as a "teenage fragrance" doesn't do it justice, as it also goes down well with older people. Of course it is a "synthetic fragrance", but in a pleasant form. Not all synthetics are the same, as you will see with some alternatives.

Its longevity and sillage are quite good for me, especially for a fresh fragrance.

Lattafa Najdia Najdia Eau de Parfum

That was my first Lattafa fragrance a few years ago and it was praised everywhere as the alternative and even today some Youtubers still say that, I don't know why they do that. I was very disappointed, because for me it is still the worst Lattafa fragrance I have and I have a lot of them. Extremely synthetic, downright oppressive and if anything it has a bit of a resemblance to drydown, but you have to be very gracious about that. The longevity is good though.

Lattafa Hayaati Hayaati

It is still sometimes hyped as an alternative on YouTube and TikTok, especially because it seems to go down well with women. Unfortunately, Lattafa has once again reached deep into the chemistry lab. Not quite as bad as the Najdia, but here in the intensive sting version. You shouldn't spray it too much because it can be very tiring for the nose! Here too, the only parallel to the "role model" is that the scent is at least in the same direction. However, the longevity is good here too.

Rasasi Hawas "Hawas for Him | Rasasi"

I still have an old batch from the early days and it's also one of my summer favorites. It has the same scent and also offers a nice mix of freshness and sweetness. It is definitely a possible alternative, although the scent is a little different in direct comparison, especially spicier and in the drydown. Its brute durability and sillage should be emphasized. Incidentally, it came out a year before Invictus Aqua 2016, but I don't think Paco Rabanne wanted to clone Hawas, because they smell too different for that.

Rasasi Hawas Ice "Hawas Ice | Rasasi"

This has been made a lot sweeter than its predecessor, which is exciting, but takes it even further away from Invictus Aqua 2016. Otherwise, it has the same characteristics as the normal Hawas with an extra portion of freshness on top and also a very good shelf life.

So far, unfortunately, I haven't managed to find a really good clone of the original and it doesn't seem to be that easy to clone it, even though it's "only" an Invictus Flanker. So the search continues and if I find one, I'll let you know!

Very underrated and incorrectly associated
For me, it has been the best summer fragrance of all time since 2016. The fragrance that made the entire Invictus range visible. Neither the Legend Spirit nor the Hawas come close to it in terms of DNA. Both of these fragrances only have something bubblegum-like in common with the Invictus Aqua 2016, it's a shame that all the Youtubers suggest these 2 fragrances as alternatives. The Invictus Aqua 2016 smells much more qualitative than these two and has a perfect balance of sweetness, freshness and spice. Also smells different than these 2, much better in my opinion. Less pungent despite more depth. Finally the Aqua 2016 is out again as a 2024 version. Same DNA, weaker shelf life, as it still needs to mature. Finally, after 8 years, the Invictus team has responded to the wishes of the fans and brought it out again.

Often copied but the original remains original - rating of 7.2 is a joke. The DNA was perfected in 2016, everything after that went downhill

Fruity opening, salty drydown. Far better than the newer Acqua.
