Gorgeous Woody Gourmand
Havana Rain has one of the most beautifully swoon-inducing openings I've experienced. Orange, pineapple, mint, milk, coffee. A few sprays in the morning on a warmish day in warmish rain and - I'm not exaggerating - my eyes widened and my jaw dropped. If the perfumer wanted us to walk in the streets of Havana in morning freshness after a rain, the smell of orange trees swirling around us, and of cafés serving sweet coffee with milk and a sprig of mint, he's succeeded profoundly. I tell you, friends, for a few minutes, I was there.

This was my first blind buy, and I don't regret. After those first morning notes burn off, the rest of the day is enwrapped in warm, hazelnut coffee, then a strong accord of hazelnut liqueur with plentiful dry cocoa, backed by warm musk and sandalwood emerging later in the drydown. I can't even make the excuse that I'm not a gourmands person - I'm definitely not! But after this, I may change my mind.

What I am is a former baker and pastry cook, and none of these notes feel synthetic to me. This is extrait concentration, and the longevity here, especially on non-exposed skin, is all-day. The scent rubbing on my arms against sleeves was gone rather soon, but on clothing, it persisted through a machine wash. The sillage is strong but not so strong that anyone mentioned it, which is fine by me, as I don't apply to get compliments but for my own edification. I was glad that there was not a reliance on oud here, as this house has reputation for using it in almost everything. I think that it would have dominated too many other good smells.

I have to be in the mood to wear this, but it's beautiful stuff.

A three-dimensional scent
It has that bold kind of construction that instantly reminds me of Double Bond : a mix of notes that feel like they’re heading in totally different directions, yet somehow end up forming a lively, three-dimensional harmony. On me it leans masculine, with an austere, dark vibe and a sort of “tobacco feeling” (even if there’s no actual tobacco listed, the mood is *so* there). It must be that combo of dry, aromatic, spicy notes weaving together like smoke in an old vintage room.
The best part, though, is its double personality: next to the dark, masculine side there’s this surprisingly soft, almost creamy smoothness that I’m starting to notice in pretty much all the Reniers I’ve tried. Woods, green facets, ambery touches and that barely-there gourmand hint all shift around like London weather in 24 hours :-)
There’s always that sensual, lived-in depth that Renier puts in fragrances. What a great brand!

Sunk on the way to Cuba
I’m a bit sparse with reviews, but since a flanker to my favorite scent Habana 500 has come out, I felt I had to make an effort to compare the two. This review probably only makes sense if you know the other one.

So my expectations were naturally very high, but unfortunately, they were not met.

The scents are somewhat similar; I get the same associations (Kaiserschmarrn in an old cast-iron pan with plum compote, slightly fruity and creamy) as with the 500, but everything is unfortunately too muted for me to feel any enthusiasm. It feels like you have your nose almost closed and only catch half of the scent.

The opening - terrible! The first 5-10 minutes smell to me like Uhu glue, but thankfully that fades away quite quickly. After that, the scent is okay, but it can't compete with Habana 500. When I wear one scent on my left arm and the other on my right, the Havana Rain simply gets overshadowed, and I could have saved the sprays. The longevity isn’t even the problem; yesterday after about 9 hours, I could still perceive the scent, albeit very faintly.

What I am glad about is that the honey is not too intense (Bee) for my taste; you have to like that. Here, I only perceive the honey very lightly in the drydown.

The Habana 500 evokes a scent memory in me that simply makes the fragrance special. I don’t know if the Havana Rain would have achieved this if I didn’t know the 500. Perhaps I am being unfair to the scent, but I can’t really remain objective here.

Since I have worn the scent repeatedly over the last few days, I would say that the scent is by no means bad, but unfortunately also nothing more. If I had bought a full bottle instead of just a sample, I would keep it (to not run out of the 500 too quickly), but for special moments, I would definitely still reach for the 500. And if I run out of the 500 and haven’t found an alternative by then, I would probably get the Havana Rain just to indulge in memories... unfortunately with a tear in my eye.

If I were to attempt a rating, I would give the Havana Rain a 7, while the Habana 500 was a 10. But I also think that both scents won’t suit everyone’s taste, so it’s better to try them out first.
