Chewy, rich, true-to-life tobacco leaves in a pouch
Vanilla Pipe Tobacco is one of the best representations of unlit tobacco that I’ve come across. The layout of the scent is rather simple – damp, chocolatey tobacco leaves segueing into a warm, smooth vanilla and hay drydown. But its genius lies in skipping all of the ephemera that usually distracts from the beautiful aroma of tobacco. Smart move. In lunging straight for the pleasure center of tobacco, Vanilla Pipe Tobacco cuts to the chase and gives us the payoff immediately, rather than making us wade for hours through tons of sweaty aromatics and spice, as in Herod (Parfums de Marly) or Tobacco Vanille (Tom Ford).
Furthermore, it is that rare thing – a tobacco scent with perfectly-judged volume control. Many tobacco-based perfume oils are hellishly strong, as if the perfumer, unable to control its raucous nature, has settled for letting it ride roughshod over all the other notes. But here, the perfumer has managed the tobacco very ably, tamping it down with dark cocoa and the buttered-honey hush of clover absolute and coumarin.
The scent description for the scent mentions the word ‘chewy’ and that is apt. Vanilla Pipe Tobacco may be simple, but it does indeed smell like a clutch of damp tobacco tucked inside a paper pouch, flecked here and there with real vanilla bean. Love it.
