What a disappointment
I know about The 7 Virtues thanks to Anne Lauren. In fact, she might be the most @'ed person on my blog. However, the way she has been raving about Santal Vanille makes me think - how could I not try it? An avid vanilla lover, I am so glad the day has finally come. I got my hands on a small 7 Virtues discovery set. It contains Vanilla Woods, Coconut Sun, Blackberry Lily, Santal Vanille and Lotus Pear. Naturally, I will be starting off with Santal Vanille, but I am very curious about Vanilla Woods and Coconut Sun too.

So, now in my hands, how good is Santal Vanille? Both the name and the notes allude to something warm and smooth. I am imagining something sweet and creamy from the coconut milk, something warm and spicy from the cardamom, hoping for something rich and elegant from the cashmere, sandalwood, cocoa, vanilla and frankincense. Santal Vanille is, on paper, ambiguously just that, but at the same time, not at all. It is fresher than I expected. The coconut milk isn't thick and creamy, it smells like the taste of fresh coconut meat. Santal Vanille remains the same after dry down. There's a hint of vanilla and cashmere, but I do not get the spiciness from cardamom, the depth form myrrh or the thickness of sandalwood.

I was honestly scared that Santal Vanille would be too close to my two other favourite vanillas, namely By the Fireplace and Memoirs of a Trespasser. However, it is a fresh and lighthearted take on vanilla. It might even be mostly appropriate for summer.

On skin, Santal Vanille opens more cedarwood-forward. The fresh coconutty note I got on paper isn't as prominent and the fragrance is less endearing. In all honesty, it is quite fleeting on skin. It might be, because I've tired my nose too much (I must admit that as soon as I received this discovery set, I powered through the set of Penhaligon).

Something about it is very The Body Shop-esque. I am getting some synthetic vibes, but that seems unlikely considering that The 7 Virtues are made from natural sources and essential oils.

I keep smelling my wrists to see if I like it or not and I don't know. I don't know. You know?
When it's not a loud yes, I guess it's a no. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautifully smooth vanilla fragrance, but I am not over the moon.

Days later, I have smelled the paper strip many times and unfortunately, I dislike it.

If you need another Bois de Balincourt
This one should do the trick!

My first and most earnest response was oooo cucumber, which means sandalwood, which means it's a Santal 33 dupe! It's not as tart as that one, but it is, quite frankly, the same as Bois de Balincourt. I love and hate it, same as with both Santal 33 and Bois de Balincourt. Not as serene or high quality as Tam Dao...a little sweeter as well.

This is going to be one of those that I would prefer to be on someone else. Enjoyable but also inescapable!

Just an average sandalwood scent
When I tried this for the first time the opening smelled like pickle water to me, really unpleasant. I usually don't have this problem, even with fragrances where a lot of reviewers mention it. Weirdly I didn't get any pickles the second and third time I sampled it, so I guess it just took me a moment to get used to the scent.

This is clearly more of a sandalwood than a vanilla scent. It represents the two sides of sandalwood well: On the one hand it seems rather dry and warmly spicy from the black pepper, cedar and cardamom, but on the other hand there is a milky creaminess to it from the vanilla, cashmeran and a soft coconut. I can also sense the myrrh, which tends to smell somewhere between minty, creamy, balsamic and medicinal to me. It's a nice note. For some reason I also smell an unlisted violet here, the watery sweet kind, not the powdery kind.

Overall I'm not that impressed. Looking at the listed notes I expected something warmer and more vanillic, but this turns a tiny bit sour on me. It's not bad once I got over the pickles, but not my thing. I think both Crystal Noir (Versace) and Gris Charnel (bdk) are better choices in this genre.

Not bad, fresher than expected
Slightly better performance on this one compared to Vanilla Woods (although longevity still not amazing at 5-6 hours). I thought they would smell similar going by name only but they couldnt be more different (for both being vanilla woods frags)

Surprisingly green and aromatic opening, very sandalwood heavy which I love, slowly develops into a smooth woody vanilla. Nice, but I think other houses do it better (eg. Guerlain and Sana Jardin). Now having tried Eau Duelle, she is that bitch and I dont need Santal vanille, but it isnt bad!

Standard Sandalwood
Similar to Santal 33 minus the pickle smell- according to reviews. I’ve never smelled Santal 33, so that means absolutely nothing to me. Overall Santal Vanille is a creamy woody scent that is accompanied by a slight touch of sweetness and lighter traces of the same earthyness found in Tom Fords Black Orchid edp. This fragrance does not limit itself to time of day, occasion, or season. In conclusion its not mind blowing, but also not boring.

Starts warm with cardamom, creamy sandalwood, a bit of coconut, and resins. Vanilla comes out more once it's dried down. So cozy and easy :)

Santal 33 but warmer & sweeter. If Santal 33 is too dry/green for you, but you like that tangy sandalwood note, then this is perfect.

Addictive blend of smooth sandalwood, creamy vanilla with some fresh spiciness mixed in. Very wearable and interesting, decent performance.
