"In Between Realms"
Steps
"As every blossom withers and every youth
Gives way to age, every stage of life blooms,
every wisdom also blossoms and every virtue
In its time and must not last forever.
It must be the heart at every call of life
Be ready to part and start anew,
In order to be brave and without mourning
In other, new bonds to give.
And in every beginning there is a magic,
That protects us and helps us to live.
We shall pass cheerfully through room after room,
To none as to a homeland hang,
The world spirit does not want to tie us and narrow,
He wants to lift us step by step, expand.
No sooner are we at home in a circle of life
And settled in comfortably, so slackening threatens;
Only who is ready for departure and journey,
May paralyzing habituation to be released.
It will perhaps also still the hour of death
Send us young towards new spaces,
Life's call to us will never end,
Well then, heart, take leave and healthy!"
Hermann Hesse (written in 1941-it should actually probably be called `Transcend` first)

Definition: ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshipper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks.

I sit alone in a small, barren chapel - Somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
It is cool and quiet and contemplative. There is a cloud of recently smoked, now already cooled incense hanging in the room, giving me comfort and peace. A few branches on the small devotional altar emit slender resinous plumes of fragrance.
I fall into myself; my body boundaries dissolve; I float. Who am I, where am I, in which time calculation am I? Am I at all? Scraps of thoughts come and go; I would like to sit like this for a long time. I know that as soon as I move, I'm back, I have new strength and it continues or something starts anew. But for this moment I still hang in the intermediate realm and could also stay, eternity calls for me.

First I feel the fragrance for a moment resinous-fresh, then the incense already unfolds in all its facets. For me, the individual notes are not really ausmachbar (but is vllt also on my still untrained nose). But I find the fragrance also overall very complex and the individual notes balsamic interwoven. There is also really a lot of balsamic in it - incense resin, incense oil, incense ash, amber, mastic resin, sandalwood, guaiac wood. Balsam for the soul. Ex Voto I feel is very close to the skin, it melts into the wearer, boundaries blur, layers blend together; where does the skin end, where does the fragrance begin; is it still skin and fragrance or is it already a fragrance skin?
Initially he starts quite bombig, then I ask myself after about 30 min - Is he still there? Yes, he is - but very fine, quiet and gentle-soothing-balsamic he lays around one like an energy body.
For me, my absolutely favorite incense fragrance. When I put it on, comes to me immediately Hermann Hesse's poem "Steps" (see above) in mind.
An intermediate fragrance. A new beginning scent. A healing scent. A protection fragrance. An aura scent.
"Well then, heart, take leave and healthy!"

It is by no means something for `incense traumatized`; probably also nothing for those looking for fruit, sweetness, pure freshness or oriental-opulent, I think.
I like the flacons of Wiener Blut exceptionally well - with this one, the yellow-ochre glass shines like a citrine - with a Bakelite lid - somehow 1920s - Art Deco. And suddenly everything is sepia again. When I was a little kid, I always thought that the world used to be completely in sepia, because the early, first film shots often had such a sepia cast. Sepia also goes well with the fragrance - in my opinion. My soft focus fragrance. I am softer, the world seems softer, the mood is peaceful.
Small value drop - I understand's also actually not so really, how that could happen to the WienerBlutigen - the inscribed adhesive label fits well from the paper and also to the design, but the writing blurs on contact with moisture and the label then acts quickly a bisserl schmuddelig if you grab it too often with bappschigen fingerlets.
That's still vllt better, huh???

Heavy Metal to Salvador Dali
Now I have smelled a few fragrances in the last decades. But I have a hard time with this one The company Wiener Blut has been around for a few years now and received praise after praise after praise from the Viennese lifestyle press. Wiener Blut is placed in a high-priced segment and can only be purchased in a few places in Vienna. The concept is roughly: to make the world of Viennese fragrances around 1900 tangible. Balls, monarchy, kuk, sissy and consorts. A good concept, actually. For me as a fan of time travel fragrances, of course, very appealing. It would even be ingenious if old creations were to be reissued. Border genius!
Unfortunately, I do not have a reference to it. No reference is made to these formulations. So it may or may not be. Today's perfumers are booked. The result should refer to Vienna around 1900.
As written, I miss the reference to the fragrances of that time. In my collection there are a few older creations. Caron pour Homme M, Alt Innsbruck, Floid and of course "the fragrance to enslave them all" Knize 10, all extreme fragrances. But all of them very dressing for the right man and should not be missing in any collection.
Now for the ex voto...
According to the price, the bottle comes in great packaging. And the bottle is very, very casual. Hand-blown glass supposedly. Great shape. Handy. Great.
Only the writing on the glued label blurs on contact with liquid...For me a shortcoming.
The fragrance opens with an extreme top note. Here it is indeed advisable to act economically. For yourself and the dear people around you. Super, super resinous. Then rubber comes to resin. Later wood. Yeah, sandalwood. I'm having a hard time, guys. I don't know anything about mastic resin or similar scents. I just stay in my emotional world. Fragrances are always very emotional.
Ex Voto is for me an Arschtreter smell...I don't get anything mystical and also no Siegmund Freud and certainly no Sissy...smoke, resin, wood, rubber For me, the scent does not fit at all into the marketing of Wiener Blut. From another company with the appropriate marketing channel, this fragrance would be ultra macho. The scent that man puts on when man just wants to smoke.
Lot of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and a violent concert. Death metal, grindcore, industrial. Like that. The location is full. The urinal is clogged. Edding out while pissing and write "Fuck you" on the wall of the house.
But:
He's getting quiet. Ex Voto is taming up. And then he is the super companion for an opening. Then the would-be art-obsessed lawyers ask "What is that? So interesting! Never smelled!"
Very nice. Associations are then made with a workshop that restores old furniture and antiques.
The bottom line:
A somewhat difficult smell. The man himself must grow. From heavy metal to vernissage. From brood species to
Dali.
I think he's terrific to me. He gets exactly the place in my collection next to Knize Ten and Alt Innsbruck.
And children: no compliments from womenfolk or influencers. Lovin it!

Become one with the surreal smoke
She has her cell phone on her ear and he sees her smiling. "He's got something for us," she finally says, "but none of the stuff we had yesterday." "No more black Afghan?" Disappointed, he turns away for a moment. "Come on," she says, "he's got something."
A little while later, they're in the park. From one of the shadows that the still low but warm spring sun casts behind the big old trees, he approaches them, lets his gaze wander trained through the park and finally sits down on the bench next to them. "What about the Afghan we had yesterday?" she asks him. "You can't keep blowing your brains out. It'll destroy any sense of finesse in you. Here, the stuff comes from Vienna and is called Ex Voto," he says mysteriously, "delicious light brown edges, very fine-grained and minimally resinous. Some kind of pollum." Discreetly he holds the small, golden yellow, angular piece under the nose of both of them one after the other.
Finest dry-smoky, at the beginning fresh resinous notes are to be noticed. Both know this smell all too well, and both love this smell. "In an hour, you won't be able to smell him at arm's length, he'll be very close to you." he's lulling them both in. "He then goes more into the spicy resinous, the camillear freshness disappears. He becomes nobler, sandallier and more reserved, the smoky even darker and more oily." "How long does this stuff last?" she wants to know. "Depends," he thinks, "people are different. It works for me for at least seven hours. I can't say that exactly. Because this stuff is surreal. This blurs the boundaries between reality and reality, between what he does and what you are. Very gentle and calming. This will ground you in the here and now.
But some people also shoot themselves away with this hip completely overbred stuff so that they can hardly perceive finer things like this properly. They'll just need more of it... or a break."
Without noticing it, the two of them are constantly busy absorbing the gentle, warm scent of Ex Voto. "Well, I see," you buddies finally say, leaving the edges behind and disappearing again into the shadows of the trees. "I'll see you tomorrow." he's sure.
A break? He's probably right. You need that now and then. Again they smell the scent. But not now, really not!

Supplement after six months: After several tests of different incense scents this one turned out to be a clear favourite for me. The smoke here is almost multidimensional, multi-layered, lives from the contrast of dry fine-grained, slightly sweetly spicy woody resinity and the development from the light camomile that flanked the smoke at the beginning, to the very close, dark and oily, ambry depth that the incense increasingly gets. Even after a few hours you still seem to be surrounded by your calming aura, even if you can't be sure if the scent is still there.
The manufacturer advertises with the characteristic of the fragrance not to be loud, to whisper instead of scream, to become one with the wearer over time, to unfold dynamically. Mark Buxton has lived up to this philosophy of the Viennese blood founder Alexander Lauber, who is on the trail of the style of Vienna's fragrances at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and emulates these models. Ex Voto is never boring, never intrusive and always wearable.
The glass bottles are handmade, unique pieces, the lids are made of bakelite (the stuff from which the rotary light switches used to be made).
I thought this completely revised version of the commentary was urgently needed to do justice to this great fragrance.

Sharp and spicy at first, but quickly settles down to a polite, dry, resinous-woody scent with a distinct ash note. Subpar performance.
