A Lion Has a Beautiful Fawny Coat
Wait till you sniff the new Sable Fauve. It will knock your socks off. That's what happened to me while checking out the six new releases from Yves Rocher La Collection Parfums, Cuir de Nuit, and Sable Fauve blew my mind!

Allegedly designed to recall tawny sand, the warmth of the sun on the skin, Sable Fauve is just too smoky, sweet, gourmand, and vanillic. The tonka you get here is an almond and smoke subtlety of this kind of roasted beans, from the synthetic coumarin, became more renowned thanks to its use in Shalimar By Jacques Guerlain in 1921. A sweet and fresh note will rise from bottom to heart of the fragrance, lingering on the skin for hours while enriching the overall aroma. As used in Sable Fauve, it has a sweet odor readily recognized as the scent of newly mown hay. Alongside its herbaceousness, it displays a slight spicy inclination – as well as a vanillic aspect, which is why often people confound it with the vanilla. This warmth also extends to encompass notes of caramel. I admire its creaminess and powdery notes, bringing depth and character to the fragrance once combined with benzoin and labdanum, here used to give a gourmand and oriental touch. An alternative to vanilla, tonka features heavily in iconic fragrances with a fruity-candy aroma, such as Thierry Mugler's Angel and Le Mâle by Jean-Paul Gaultier, just to mentions a few.

But tonka is not the main note, and it is a background supporter. Instead, the star is benzoin, with its velvety finish and pronounced fruity note, reminiscent of stewed Morello cherries, and this is the sweetheart of many a perfume, including Sable Fauve, which is a real bomb of benzoin. What everyone calls vanilla in their reviews is the note of benzoin dominating this fragrance. Ditto, tonka bean is there, too, but most of all it's all about the leading benzoin.

Hold on, is this perfume all too cloying, sugary, sickly? Of course not! Sable Fauve features labdanum, which is used to create a resinous, woody-amber accord, reminiscent of ambergris and incense, and tone down the sweetness. The brown-eyed rockrose, Cistus ladanifer, is a species of a flowering shrub. The broad evergreen leaves are covered by glandular hairs that exude the odoriferous oleo-resin we call labdanum, better known to some gardeners as Rock Rose, which is a pillar of chypre perfumes and many Orientals. This warm and sophisticated resin is sometimes perceived as leathery, sometimes honey-like, with hints of plum.

It's a pleasant fragrance, a very great one. Well made and long-lasting. I've had it on for about all day now, and it's still quite prominent. But at the end of the day, it's just benzoin. I have smelled this type of accord in other fragrances before, yet this one is excellent. This perfume is a pleasant surprise, and now I've seen everything. The benzoin here is incredibly well done, so elegant, resinous, even smoky! Also, accompanied by the right amount of tonka and just a taste of labdanum, it stays cozy till the end.

Sable Fauve is a perfect feast for the wintertime, and long-lasting too. In my conclusion, it is a naive bet, a perfume with character and timelessness, and I see it harmless for wearing at the office. On the outfit side, nothing about to complain. I fancy the fact that it is not heady from the start but that it remains stable throughout the day with a tendency towards the gourmand-sweet side at the end of the day. This perfume is an excellent pick, in the same collection I also really fancied Cuir de Nuit, which I've reviewed already.

Forgettable
Amber, vanilla, warm spicy, sweet, balsamic. Sable Fauve should be right up my alley, but I am so happy that I blind bought this fragrance in a small bottle. Though it isn't bad, it is just so forgettable that I won't be reaching for it, at all.
When I was inspired to purchase the Yves Rocher perfumes it was solely based on reviews, mostly Sebastian's from The Perfume Guy. I don't have an Yves Rocher store locally where I could try them out first. And I was contemplating whether to buy Sable Fauve or Nouveau Genre in a small and the other in a big bottle. I am so happy that I made the right choice!

Sable Fauve is an ambery and sweet fragrance, but nothing stands out, no small amount of spice, no surprising note from a citrus, nothing giving it a depth like some leather or incense could do. It is a linear fragrance of tonka, benzoin and labdanum. I am actually at a loss for words, I don't think I have anything else to say about it. Maybe, that this is so light that it can still be worn in spring and summer, despite the fragrance family that it belongs to. It might even be a good layering fragrance for those that would like to add sweetness without prominent notes of e.g. vanilla, syrup or maple. Sable Fauve doesn't carry a prominent sweetness of tonka or definable note of labdanum, it is in fact just the smell of sweet. This fragrance is so faint that I wore Musc Ravageur the same day and no memory or scent of Sable Fauve was left on my skin.
Skin chemistry has a lot to say, so this one might just not work for me, which is why it won't stay in my collection. However, I feel less like a spendthrift about purchasing Cuir de Nuit, which was also on my radar...

One last remark is that on paper the fragrance is fairly lighter, even with a citrus kick, and the scent is considerably more men's cologne like. It is too light and almost like an eau de fraiche.

Sugary amber
Not as good as I had hoped when reading the olfactory pyramid.

It's an amber, vanilla, spicy scent... but way too sweet. Sugar is so overwhelming that it sometimes becomes difficult to succeed in smelling amber. It's a shame, really :(

Not bad but not balanced enough. Too bad, it could have been great!

The staying Power and sillage are not good.

Soft Sand
Yesterday, a letter from Rocher fluttered into the house, enticing with special offers.

I didn’t need to be told twice, as the free mascara comes in very handy for me.
And my husband was also not averse to a visit to Rocher, as he likes the fragrances - and the shampoo.

I immediately focused on the new summer scents - starting with Sable Fauve.
An unusual fragrance - but interesting.

The title "reddish-brown sand" is somewhat misleading, as Fauve is not dry at all.
There’s nothing crunching here.
And if I were to give the scent a color, it would be a sunny gold.

The tonka bean is round and vanilla-like, and the sweet cistus harmonizes perfectly with it.
Cistus always appeals to me in fragrances.

This sand is fine like powder - and you walk on it like on clouds.
The sun bathes this scene in golden light.

I am ready to buy, but the saleswoman informs me that the new summer scents are excluded from the discount.

Well, then I will have to wait a bit longer - as Sable is also suitable for winter.

Wow! Cuddle with me!
The perfume came to me as a gift. I had considered buying it for myself, but sometimes chance is a nice player. And I am glad to have it in my collection.

The appearance of the bottle is not very appealing. Some drugstore fragrances have prettier packaging, but in the end, you don't smell the bottle. I hope the glued label will remain presentable for a long time. If only it had been designed a bit more retro! However, since I was familiar with the look and still ordered another from the line, it shows that the appearance is really not important to me.

The first scent was very impactful for me. I was startled because somehow I expected something softer from the composition. But once the initial impact is over, a nice warm scent remains. It is not complex, and the development is more than restrained. However, the scent reminds me of old perfumes from YR; it has that typical YR smell that I always liked. Whatever it is, it is not a truly overwhelming fragrance, but a solid everyday scent.

What do you smell? It smells very warm, almost woody. It definitely reminds me a lot of the Orient, but actually of the rather inexpensive fragrances you can buy there. Can you smell the vanilla? Honestly, no, but there is something warm and cozy that you can't quite name.

After about three hours, it loses intensity close to the skin, but on clothing, it remains perceptible even after hours. It transitions from a slightly oriental punch to a cuddly scent, which fits perfectly with winter.

It would not be a scent that I absolutely need. But it is not one that I feel I must part with. Since I still have it fresh, I also need to load it with stories. For now, it is like a blank canvas waiting to be painted. I am curious to see what colors this scent will eventually wear.

If nothing better comes to mind, it can join me on my next trip to the Orient in March. Then I can smell vacation again when I am at home. Would I recommend it? With reservations. The longevity is really disappointing; after a maximum of four hours, you can't smell it anymore. For that, the bottle probably won't last too long either, which is okay for 100ml. But YR can do better than that.

And the memory someone had with Nature Millenaire: the basic mood fits, but in my memory, I have stored this one as woodier and rounder. I liked it as a budding teenager, but my standards are higher now.

So, a good everyday scent, but not a must-have fragrance.

EDIT: The scent was not really what I had imagined. And yet I will repurchase it without wearing it. Why? Because I find it to be a great car scent, and I look forward to every morning when I get into the car and perceive this fragrance. I have decanted it and placed it on the ventilation. And here it is perfect.

A beautiful, very soft scent that you can wear as a cozy companion in the cold season. Resinous sweetness with tonka. Quite subtle!

Another little highlight from Yves Rocher. A real charmer. Normally I don't like tonka. But here, I do. Cozy, sweet, delicious.

I'm just not a fan of tonka bean, here it's powdery, with a somehow fruity stickiness that I don't even perceive as resinous.

A lovely autumn/winter snuggler. Pleasantly resinous (not too much), soft, warm. I feel beautifully wrapped up.

It doesn't make waves in the vanilla pudding, unfortunately too flat and vanilla for me.

Chocolatey start, then sweet jam joins in and overwhelms everything. It smells like fruit candies, with a slightly balsamic base. No.

For me, it's more of a men's scent. It has something striking, but also creamy. Definitely unique and not for everyone. I quite like it.

There’s a Black Opium knockoff at Yves Rocher. Which one is better: this one or the original? Who knows!
