The Relativizing Element in Dragée
For a long time, very long, I hesitated to articulate my feelings about a fragrance, even though I am a big fan of Parfumo and visit the site almost daily. I have occasionally swapped some samples and ordered decants. The lovely extras always activated my guilty conscience - the motto being: You can't just take, be active too. A package from Remano was then the decisive factor that finally made me step out of my comfort zone.
Dragée - the name suggests something sweet. And precisely for this reason, I would have sworn on a stack of Bibles that I would NEVER write a comment about this fragrance. Because everything that is dominantly sweet, drifting into gourmand territory, causes me stomach discomfort. But curiosity won out, and I dripped a few drops onto my wrist.
Sweet, for sure. But there is more. A complexity that goes beyond almond milk. It’s as if a bright, shiny swirl of deep dark reddish-brown, viscous liquid has intruded into the pastel image of ecru and cream. Is it the slightly burnt crust that forms at the bottom of the pan after caramelizing? The scent changes little in the first hour. I hold that against it a bit.
Towards the end, shavings of wood push to the forefront. In my imagination, it comes from a legendary vanilla tree. Of course, it doesn’t exist, since the vanilla pod comes from an orchid species. But Dragée is a juggler. Dragée has seduced me to engage with a fragrance despite my spontaneous aversion - due to its name. That is true (perfumer) art. It would be my first gourmand fragrance. Why not… “What do I care about my talk from yesterday?” my father-in-law likes to say. A saying that I have previously interpreted rather critically. Thanks to Dragée, I finally understand him.
