Hauntingly beautiful
I picked up a bunch of the Jo Malone x Zara collaboration scents when they first went on sale. Who could pass up on rollerballs and candles for a few euros a pop? And let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality, especially coming out of a place like Zara where many of their offerings are dupes that smell offensive and cheap…

Elegantly Tokyo is a white floral woody scent with a hint of spice that leaves a hauntingly beautiful trail wherever you go. Heavy on the jasmine, I find it projects well and lasts a long time, especially when directly sprayed on clothing. One of the more unique scents in the collection, it’s quite refreshing to see something like this in Zara instead of something that is sickly sweet.

ELEGANTLY TOKYO

Elegantly Tokyo by Spanish Zara in collab with British House Jo Malone is a Unisex Oriental Floral Woody perfume. The fragrance was launched in 2021 and the perfumer who signs this fragrance is Jo Malone.

Elegantly Tokyo as the name dictates opens elegantly with a white flower oriental, clean, fresh and shimmering. Here we are talking about cherry blossoms and sambac jasmine: sambac jasmine, also known as Arabian jasmine, is less indole and animalic than Grasse jasmine, which reinforces the cleansing character of the fragrance.

The cherry blossom right on the way out immediately reminded me of the famous Sakura cherry grove in Park Of Carmo in São Paulo, which has its festival every year in late July and early August in celebration of its bloom ... it is like walking among the Sakuras; a delicate delight.

When drying, akigalawood brings a woody depth as if it were the trunks of Sakuras, it also resembles a very light 'oud, nothing animalic and dirty-free, akigalawood as well as cipriol is widely used in fragrances to create the 'oud accord. The end result is an impressive white clean feel.

In short a boost to the heat, perfume finishes with a fresh and clean white floral with a soft and clean woody background too. It refers to cleaning a clean white linen shirt freshly ironed. And it has the best performance in this line next to Ebony Wood, which incidentally caught my attention and also entered the radar.

Top Note:
Cherry Blossom.

Middle Note:
Jasmine Sambac.

Base Note:
Akigalawood.

Fresh Clean Floral
A simple white floral is hardly groundbreaking but this is a good pick if you’re looking for a clean daily jasmine that’s well worth your money.

The jasmine is more fresh and green than indolic. The opening lily note doesn’t stick around for me, instead it’s 70% jasmine and 30% neroli (the same synthetic neroli that Jo Malone tends to use) for the first hour or so. Then the woody/soft patchouli drydown makes itself known and that’s when it gets GOOD. The Akigalawood blend merges with the jasmine in a way that works incredibly well for me, giving the florals a velvety base and some depth. Performance is insane, easily lasts 18 hours on skin alone.

Yes, this is a very basic jasmine but it’s a good daily wear year round. Incredible value if you want a fresh, clean floral.

Freshness for a while
This one delivers what the notes promise: a fresh and watery lily, soft jasmine and some grounding wood.

The opening feels a lot like wandering in a japanese garden, including a waterlily koi pond. The jasmine is present for the longest part of the ride, and is not overly indolic - it all remains quite fresh and clean, if somewhat synthetic.

For its price it’s surprisingly elegant, has an impressive sillage and a very good longevity. Big compliment getter, too, if anecdotal evidence counts.

The only downside is the late dry down (after about 3 hours, and the rest of the night), which i perceive as sharp and sour. I can’t attribute it to something cheap as i experienced a very similar, unpleasant sharp note in more expensive perfumes like Dyptique Eau des sens and Hermes Jardin de Monsieur Li. It’s probably something my nose doesn’t like - your mileage may vary.

Clean
I knew that Elegantly Tokyo might not appeal to me, but I bought this perfume as a curiosity, under the influence of an impulsive desire for white flowers. The first impression, as I expected, was average, but not repulsive.
Immediately after application, I was struck by a sharp peppery note, which seemed to me the most interesting moment next to the late base. There must be pepper here because it pierces the nose for the first few seconds. Surprisingly quickly, however, the scent softens, the pepper disappears and cleanliness appears. Yes, the scent is very clean. It reminds me of a very modern, clean and minimalistic apartment in white and light beige. Actually, this scent is probably more suitable as a room freshener, or as the aroma of soap in a tasteful bathroom, than as a perfume to wear on the skin.
The jasmine does not stand out that much, more the lily, which I expected to be a challenge for me. In the first hour, the scent has a lot of moisture, but this watery note resembles water that has been soured after flowers in a vase. The water has soaked in the scent of white flowers, it has been standing there for some time and they forgot to pour it out. Then this impression passes and the composition again emanates the purity of white flowers.
The scent is fresh, devoid of sweetness, cold and minimalistic. It does not change much over time, but in the base there is akigalawood, thanks to which Elegantly Tokyo takes on an even more modern and such austere, sterile atmosphere.
It is indeed an elegant, unisex and quite interesting scent, but it does not fully convince me. Maybe it is the lily and the rotten water in the vase. These are perfumes that have to wait until spring for the final verdict. Winter is undoubtedly not the time for such compositions. I expected better parameters, but currently they are average, the scent is surprisingly delicate. I will return to testing in spring.

Edit: Another test in favor of Elegantly Tokyo. I really like this scent after a few hours when the flowers fade into the background and the spicy akigalawood base is the main thing. Maybe that's where the pepper in the opening comes from. However, longevity is much better than I thought at first.

I can smell it intensely on myself but others don’t feel it particularly strong. Would have been a good trait were it a more interesting scent.

This perfume feels like black and white. Pretty cold, straightforward, peppery, would make an amazing signature scent.

Amazing cheapie with clean soapy jasmine and a nice backbone from the akigalawood giving it great performance.

Peppery jasmine. Indore jasmine would have been better, but it's a bit artificial. It's trying to look realistic but failing.

As if I've just washed myself with my bougie Jasmine showergel : the jasmine is prominent, but it's also fresh, synthetic and a tad soapy.

Jo Malone is not a perfumer. That aside, this is a lovely, simple and tidy jasmine. Smells great, great price.
