Salted Amber...
Ambre Gris opens with a sweet, slightly fruity davana before quickly transitioning to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart smoky amber featuring a sea-salt facet resembling ambergris takes the fore, supported by a noticeable cedarwood undertone with a dose of slightly animalic musk and mild geranium. As the composition reaches the late dry-down the musk remains, turning near-transparent with the amber eschewing the smoke but keeping the salty facet, adding in subtle vanilla through the finish. Projection is excellent and longevity outstanding at around 15 hours on skin.

Ambre Gris is a tough composition to like. The davana open is quite nice, but it only lasts five seconds before the extremely odd salted smoky amber arrives in all its glory. This is obviously what the perfumer is trying to portray as ambergris, but if this is what ambergris is supposed to smell like, I know I don't like it. This holds especially true with the musk and geranium pairing that adds to the off-putting nature of the composition. The late dry-down is tolerable, but it is not even close to enough to save this disappointing concoction by Perris. The bottom line is the $155 per 100ml bottle Ambre Gris by Perris is a weird smelling approximation of rare ambergris that is extremely difficult to tolerate sniffing let alone wearing, earning it a "poor" 2 stars out of 5 and an avoid recommendation.

Eau d'olives noirs
I am often cautious when trying a new scent and usually spray once on my wrist before going all out. I forgot my usual habit today when I applied several sprays of Ambre Gris. I quickly regretted it. I was assaulted with sickly sweet powder and a soapy rose. I was also detecting some unpleasant sourness which is possibly the coumarin. My partner had been complaining about a black olive smell in the kitchen. We later discovered that it was me who was sporting 'Eau de black olives' aka Ambre Gris.

Amber for All Seasons
"Ambre Gris" from the previously unknown brand "Perris Monte Carlo" was the first niche fragrance recommended to me at the Schlossparfümerie in Stuttgart. I sprayed it on, received a sample, and as a fragrance beginner, I was taken aback by the price of 100 ml for €125.

The sample has been with me since the beginning of the year (and has already been replaced). Now, I will likely have to purchase the bottle, as I really like this scent.

The fragrance is a wonderfully light gray amber, fresh, delicate, with a hint of lemon (I always smell lemon in gray amber), dry yet pleasantly warm to my perception.
Sandalwood and cedar provide a light spiciness. The vanilla is just a whisper, gently brushing me without sweetness. Unfortunately, I cannot detect any rose.

For me, it is a feel-good scent that comforts me on bad days, refreshes me at 25 degrees, and gives me a delicate warmth at 0 degrees.

"Ambre Gris" is, for me, a fragrance for every season, warm in summer and cool in winter. It is also quite wearable for men who are looking for a fine, unobtrusive scent.

The bottle in gold looks elegant at first glance, but up close it appears rather ostentatious.

Amber fans looking for more "Gray": Definitely try "Mogador" from "Les Parfumes de Soleil." However, it is a bit too intense for me; my husband, on the other hand, enjoys it very much.

I also have samples of all the other "Perris Monte Carlo" fragrances, but they probably won't tempt me into making a purchase.

Almost one like many
With amber fragrances, it's a bit of a dilemma. There are usually more fragrant similarities than differences, which can make testing a bit challenging. On top of that, there's the confusion over whether it's actually ambergris, the whale secretion, or amber (the fossilized tree resin), or even a blend of benzoin and styrax in the perfume. Since real ambergris is hardly used in perfumes anymore, I assume, like with so many other amber perfumes, that this is a synthesized variant, even though the scent is found in a higher price range and one might expect real whale vomit... whatever.

One thing right off the bat: if you don't like heavy and sweet perfumes, you can skip testing most scents in this category and you won't be happy with this little gem either. Balsamic sweetness is the main program here, and both sillage and longevity are impressive!

At first, shortly after applying the perfume, I was a bit disappointed. My first impression: one among many! A typically sweet amber note spreads like a fountain in the room.

After about 10 minutes, a very subtle change in scent becomes noticeable. The AG loses some of its sweetness, and I can detect very faint rosy nuances. This scent impression is then maintained for a long time before the gradually emerging woody base reveals itself.

The fact that an amber scent tends to lose its sweetness over time is something I haven't encountered until now; this is a welcome change for me. All the components are very tightly blended and of high quality.

The bottle design is, in my opinion, a bit ostentatious, and in reality, the gold unfortunately looks a bit "cheap," but everyone sees that a bit differently....

Anyone who likes amber perfumes should definitely give this one a try; it might be worth it.

Ambergris and strong vanilla amber. Distant ozonic and floral notes, musky base. The definition of mid.

I have mixed feelings. It is a woody floral marine scent a bit animalic and Sensual leaning feminine. Something bothers me though in it…

Balsamic, spicy, lightly fresh-floral, salt, tobacco, wood: smells just like gray whale amber is said to smell. Effective and very refined.

Heavy, sweet, feminine, floral amber scent, but it clearly falls short against the master of this weight class (SL Ambre Sultan).

Too heavy and too powdery for me. Strangely, I can imagine it well on a man, as it's not too sweet and slightly smoky.

Very sweet, very oriental, very unbearable. A trip to Marrakech is long overdue! The amber makes it really too animalistic.

I don't smell any sweetness here. Amber Gris is spicy, powdery, and soapy (clean). It smells grown-up and classy. Vintage Audrey Hepburn vibe.

Very pleasant sweet amber-rose (geranium) scent with vanilla. Starts off a bit intense, but becomes more beautiful and cozy towards the base.

Subtle, balanced, powdery, herbal, gently balsamic, oily scent, slightly smoky, without flowers, distant vanilla, grounding woods.
