Elegant balance

I went on a chypre sample bender a few months ago trying to learn more about the structure and the role of oakmoss and that’s how I discovered "Au Delà - Narcisse / Narcisse des Montagnes | Fzotic / Bruno Fazzolari"

Far and away my favorite of the genre. Glamorous, cozy, slightly eccentric. “I smell freaking fantastic.” This is the thought that runs through my mind whenever I wear it. An absolute banger of a white floral chypre (or green chypre depending on your angle.) Fazzolari strikes a perfect balance of floral indoles and fresh green-ness. I adore narcissus and here it is blended so beautifully with jasmine and neroli.  This captures the heady, buttery, quality beautifully. The neroli is sharp and creates structure and edges to the headier narcissus and jasmine.

A faithful chypre is going to feel vintage—but the notes here are balanced in such a way that I find it to be more “modern” to my nose. The indoles convey an animalic quality that feels very decadent and glamorous. Longevity is impressive. The drydown is mildly soapy but not in an unpleasant way.

It’s possible to overspray and one must bear the burden of being that person for the day. This fragrance has me feeling like a little girl sneaking into her grandmother’s nice things and just spraying with total delight and abandon. Narcotic. It lifts my mood and has me feeling comforted and confident.

Bed-roused and sex-tumbled Chamade

Au Dela Narcisse deserves the kind of 'classic green floral' status as Chanel No. 19 or Guerlain's Chamade. Revolving around a honeyed, animalic narcissus and a dulcet jasmine, Au Dela has a brisk modern feel, but none of the clipped formality of either the Chanel or the Guerlain. The opening moments - a clustering of green notes that manage to be simultaneously crisp and nectarous - are truly riveting, and though the jasmine that follows is a hair too honeyed for my taste, the overall impression is of a green floral chypre, a feat that's none too easy to accomplish in an oakmoss-limited era.

What I appreciate most about Au Dela Narcisse is that it is the rare green floral that doesn't feel ramrod stiff. It has a sexy, tousled feel to it, as if Chamade had rolled around with a lover on a bed of wild, honeyed narcissi for hours and is now pleasantly drowsy.

If Jennifer Coolidge were a Fragrance

If fragrances could be a person, this fragrance would be Jennifer Coolidge. Its her being a MILF in American Pie and a rich delusional woman in White Lotus. It feels a little vintage with hints of powder but its also demands attention with its sensual sweet dry down that has hints of animalic notes. Through it all is a thick white floral fragrance that is beautiful and funky. Its interesting that the perfumer refers to this as a modern chypre, even using real oakmoss in the formulation, because what I mainly got was the indolic white floral with some green in the background. It also stands out from this brand's other floral fragrances because it not so soft and nice.

This fragrance has some lift off the skin, creating a tight scent bubble of flowers and sensual musk. It also lasted about 4, maybe 5, hours on my skin. There are two sizes available starting at 9ml for $58 and a 30ml for $145.

A Fine Balance

A marvelous floral chypre from Bruno Fazzolari centered around one of my favorite materials, narcissus.

What I love most about Au Delà Narcisse is how its floral repertoire extends beyond the narcissus. There is a good amount of jasmine alongside orange blossom, giving off the impression of a floral bouquet. Or it could be walking into a floral garden during springtime. I see bergamot listed as a top note, however the perfume explodes in its floral glory, and I can't pick up any citrus burst. The florals are balanced by a hefty dose of oakmoss, bitter and inky, chocolaty patchouli, caramel-like labdanum, and vanillic benzoin. The "Chypre" accord that makes up the base is tuned so well. It walks a fine balance that I have not come across often. Bitter and earthy yet with a slight dustiness and the perfect amount of warmth and sweetness from the resins. The jasmine and the orange blossom are major players and never let the narcissus lead independently. A true floral chypre composition that takes from the past and adds a significant touch of modernity.

A compelling perfume that shines during Spring and Summer or, according to Bruno, in pajamas at home. It would fit any occasion. It has the refinement and the vintage flair to suit formal events and the nostalgic feel to caress your soul in the comfort of your home.
