Soothing Frankincense
Here's another drop from 2025 that I reached for. The second one after Gardelia, created by Bruno Fazzolari, DEIXIS.

I rarely blindly purchase perfumes these days. I do it when sampling is not an option, and there has been enough to excite me in the perfumer's portfolio to motivate me. Not all of Bruno's scents appeal to me. Some I like very much and some I'm not as fond of, but the most distinctive trait of him as a perfumer is that he is always ready to create something out of the ordinary. He doesn't follow trends but lets his creative ethos drive him forward. And the second thing that pushed me to pursue was the moniker, one with which I have a hard time restraining myself: "AMBER."

DEIXIS has proven to be nothing like what I expected; after all, this is Bruno. I was slightly disappointed at first, but quickly reminded myself to approach the perfume with no expectations. So I did.
I fancied this to be a heavy Labdanum-based Amber scent in the more traditional style: dusty, dry, and leathery. It is nothing like that. Then, I stopped setting expectations, reset, and went back to where it all started - Bruno composed this perfume as an ointment for his soul while going through a difficult period in his life. Then, DEIXIS made sense.

On my skin, this is a Frankincense perfume driven by the Olibanum-Styrax combo, making it fall into the "Churchy" or "Liturgical" Incense genre of fragrances. However, here comes the Bruno twist: the counterbalance provided by the Vanilla and Sandalwood, both of which add a soothing and gourmand feel to prevent the perfume from becoming your stereotypical incense composition or feeling too cold/austere. The olibanum opens the fragrance with its terpenic, citrus-like, and slightly coniferous facets, and it is quickly followed by vanilla. The labdanum is there, but it is very gentle, too shy for my liking. The Styrax does the heavy lifting next to the olibanum, and for the most part, you get this churchy frankincense experience offset by the sweet and gourmand facets of the vanilla. Later in the dry-down, the sandalwood creeps in to add its spicy, milky, and creamy nuances to the build. The perfume ends as a soothing, slightly spicy, milky, and creamy sandalwood with hints of incense. It's a very potent perfume that easily fills the room and lasts the entire day, but it is not heavy. I did wear it in the peak of the Summer heat, and it never felt cloying; a great technical achievement, I should say, to keep the vanilla in check like that.

I now get this fragrance. It embodies what I think Bruno felt during his days of grief - it has a spiritual side invoked by the frankincense accord, a soothing and caressing aspect captured through the warmth and cozy embrace of the vanilla and the sandalwood, and overall evokes a sense of tranquility. It might be a tad too sweet at times for me, but that is only if I smell it close up. In the air, it strikes a harmonious balance. Overall, it is undoubtedly a Bruno Fazzolari creation - familiar but with a twist. And that's why I keep coming back for more.

UPDATE: After wearing it more in colder weather, I decided to part with it, as the sweetness was too much for me. It's the type of "mass-appealing sweetness" that I can't stomach.

A soothing balm for a difficult season
Like the others that have reviewed, I followed Bruno's process in creating DEIXIS. I really enjoy his process and how he came to perfumery, and he really sees it as an artistic practice. He's very transparent in his work, which is also refreshing. I'm a fan of his work in general, and have gone through several samples and have several on my full bottle list.

Anyway, finding out that DEIXIS was going to be an Amber fragrance, I was immediately on board. Ambers are my favorite category, and how Bruno described what he was creating sounded like an easy addition to my collection. I missed the first drop, but ended up grabbing a travel spray on the second drop. Had I known how wonderful DEIXIS is, I'd have fought harder for a full size.

The scent is my favorite category of amber/incense, in that it's relatively heavy on the liturgical side of things. Despite all of the negatives of growing up Catholic, they really do know how to work with incense, and it's a scent profile that I'll forever love. This was a relief to me, as DEIXIS was described as an amber gourmand; while there are gourmand facets, it's never overwhelmingly sweet. As the scent dries down, the sweetness calms down even further; I can't help but continue to fall even harder.

The vanilla, sandalwood, and gourmand notes balance out what could be too bright of a frankincense note without snuffing out the light it brings. It's a soft, hazy frankincense rather than a sharp, pointed one.

On me, the labdanum comes out lovely, lending a slightly leathery, dry cola-like facet to the mix. There's a dusty, hazy element like I said before, from the sandalwood; it gives an ever so slight woody backdrop, akin to very well-worn church pews and church carpet from the 90s. This is a specific scent memory for me, so I won't go too far into it.

Further into the dry down, there's a papier d'armanie feel from the styrax. The movement/progression of different resins and their uses in different spaces feels so clever.

DEIXIS may just be in the running to dethrone my favorite amber, Amber Absolute by Tom Ford. They share similarities, but they are unique enough that both are lovely to have if you're a fan of amber.

Personally, i'd gone through a very similar situation to Bruno in caring for and ultimately handling the death of a father figure, and even writing about this situation while wearing this scent is making me emotional. It's a universal yet incredibly personal experience, and I think there's something about wearing DEIXIS that captures that as well.

Overall, DEIXIS feels like having a kind friend put their hand on yours when you're really going through it. It's like the friend who tells you that your feelings of sadness, overwhelm, and frustration are all necessary and valid, while telling you to remember that nothing bad lasts forever.

Death, Grief, and Creation
If death is a great equalizer, then so is grief, for it is one of the baseline human experiences that tie us all together. At some point, we will all grieve a loss, whether it is a cherished item, a plant, a pet, a friend, or a family member.

If grief is love with nowhere to go, a way through just may be to share this love with others via reconnection, bond-strengthening, and the act of creation, the latter being part of Bruno Fazzolari’s daily morning ‘meditative ritual’ while caring for his dying father.

It is only fitting that when creating a fragrance during this transitional point for his father — a foundational pillar in his life — Bruno felt drawn toward the ancient foundational material of labdanum. Possibly discovered by ancient goat herders after the animals grazed on the famed Cistus plants, labdanum resin has been used in perfumery and incense for thousands of years, making it one of perfumery’s oldest materials. It is included in the ingredients of countless fragrances — some estimates suggest it is used in roughly 1/3 of all fragrances ever made.

Deixis opens with a gentle sweetness that Bruno describes as ‘gourmand-like’ coupled with frankincense. Labdanum quickly rushes front and center where it remains for the life of the fragrance along with styrax, supported by soft sandalwood and a smidge of vanilla to round things out a bit. While uncomplicated and sitting fairly close to skin, it is beautiful in its pared-back simplicity. It is reflective and meditative.

The name, too, is fitting. Deixis refers to words that derive their meaning from context and relationships. In this, Bruno shares what is a deeply personal tribute to his father and the grief of his passing with us to form our own contextual relationships.

A hug that makes you cry
This is one of the most moving perfumes in my collection. I watched Bruno document the process of making it while dealing with end of life care and the death of a loved one, so certainly that has flavored my understanding. But to me this perfume is a warm hug that makes you cry, but one that likewise brings relief. Perhaps life can never go back to the way that it was before, but that doesn't mean it can no longer be good.

This is a deep woody amber composition, made in the desert heat for year round wear. It is labdanum forward, but the formula keeps it from sticking out like a sore thumb.

Curious...
*Update edit : I'm fine with the pepper. I do prefer full note list (particularly for a limited release), and it does singe my nostrils; however the rest is truly and deeply comforting.*

Funny thing : pepper, especially pink, is a dead stop pass note for me. Waited all month to open this bottle, sprayed a few times and it was...mostly what I had hoped and imagined, except there was something unpleasant to me. Like, it burns.

I've looked up the notes on every review and site that sells it over the last month, so great was my anticipation. ONLY on the ACTUAL package of the actual perfume is pink pepper listed, not here, not the "other" site, not ANY of the vendors and, most surprising, not even on the Fzotic web page for the actual bottle. NO where.

So! It's *almost* exactly what I wanted. If I had been aware that it had an ENTIRELY UNLISTED and MAJORLY prominent and unpleasant (to me) note, I would not have purchased without testing.

If you don't like pepper either, fyi, it is an unlisted note EXCEPT on the actual box. I'm going to wear it more, but so far the pepper is not backing down and it's killing me. I just needed to tell someone. Bummed. *Again, I'm past the pepper and, still, I like to know.*
