An outstanding basil-frankincense-rose fragrance with exceptional performance
Majouri is a brand that I have started exploring recently. Their bottles and marketing have a distinct Arab flair, but the perfumes are cosmopolitan, ranging the entire spectrum. I have their Secret Love which is an elegant fruity floral. Majouri perfumes produce high quality perfumes that are inexpensive, hence worth paying attention to. Philippine Courtière, the Symrise perfumer based in Dubai, is the nose behind Oriental Soul. This review was initially written for a sample atomizer that I bought from Jovoy Paris. It has been updated after I bought a full bottle from Jovoy.
The official notes listed for Oriental Soul on Majouri’s website are basil, frankincense, vanilla, rose, amber, agarwood and kyara. Instead of agarwood and kyara, Jovoy simply lists oud. I cannot find any significant different between these terms, except that kyara is commonly used for Vietnamese agarwood. Fortunately for us, there is no reason to be concerned as I don’t detect any appreciable oud in Oriental Soul at any stage. In perfumery parlance, amber is a usually a combination of a frankincense and vanilla, though other resins and tonka bean could also be used. So, the notes from Oriental Soul could be whittled down to basil, frankincense, vanilla, rose and agarwood.
The opening is a beautiful blend of basil and frankincense that complement each other very well. There is a very brief whiff of leather, turpentine and wine lees in the opening that disappears quickly. The basil goes down in the heart notes, and vanilla and rose assume a dominant role. The rose, vanilla and frankincense stay on for hours and gives Oriental Soul its identity. There is not a lot of development in this perfume. The base notes I detect on my skin are the same three notes at a lower intensity, with some woody nuances. As I mentioned earlier, I cannot detect any oud in Oriental Soul, unless it is the opening note that I misread as leather. Despite its linear profile, Oriental Soul is a beautiful basil-incense fragrance. Rose adds a delicate color without making it a rose-incense fragrance.
Majouri designates this perfume as “intense trail” on their website, which I concur with. Its performance is strong with longevity lasting 8-10 hours. The projection and sillage are also strong. But it does not become overbearing because the basil and the frankincense keep it elegant. Be careful if you plan to use it in a workplace and not exceed 1-2 sprays. It is appropriate for a mature night out, but not really suited for a party with lots of ambient smells.
I love Oriental Soul because I think that the basil-frankincense mix is unique and beautiful. It is listed as vegan, and it feels very natural organic with no synthetic tones. I think it is a bargain for $40 for 75 ml, its cost on US discounter websites.
